hi..
im probly not going to get any replys for this but i thought i should state it anyway..
if you are thinking about moving to port hedland and you have kids that are in or near the age of high school.. dont..
our high school is dangerous and if you do have kids in Hedland High you might hear alot about the fights..there only just starting now..witch means theres like a fight very week, plus the other day it go so bad AT LEAST 6cops had to come in to patrol the area..today is a good example, a knife was drawn at a few students after a dissagreement that has been going on for a few weeks now, and now its like a black verses white theme(no rascim ment)
but this is something the students get used to, as long as they keep there mouth shut and dont look like a easy target for when the kids get bored .. they should be fine.
but the construction has forced the kids to be tought in 'dongers' and the condition of them is bad..
and the students have figured out what laws they can use against the teachers so the teachers have to back off, and there favourite past time is trying to 'crack' the teachers.. witch they have successfuly done because now the school is the worst schools with a shortage of teachers in WA.
anyway i just thought i would stretch this across the Australian community. |

That is every high school. Scotch college, port headland high or just prendeville. Put boys together and there testosterone levels will sky rocket and yes they fight.
Same as northbridge. Its just the days we live in now. Got to really get used to it. sad. but true. |

| The north end of Australia gets forgotten all the time.So many things happen yet no-one takes it seriously. If this happened in the eastern states it would be on the front page of every newspaper ! We should not be getting used to it at all saos it should be fought at all levels.Maybe media attention would do the situation some good . It might get the WA politicians to worry about things north of midland for a change ! |

| Saos I'm guessing you're in Perth and I can tell you now Port Hedland is alot different to Scotch College or Prenderville . Its not just about schoolboys having a fight because that does happen in every school. This is more about a school that has gotten so bad that the teachers are too scared to go there , the well behaved students are constantly nervous of looking at another kid the wrong way because they'll get their head kicked in if they do.There would be a group of kids that have control over everything because they get away with it.You cannot compare a school like Port Headland to a Perth school, its a completely different situation , and I agree with the last post about the media attention. |

| Has the school come up with any solutions , or ideas that might help the situation or is it one of those schools that just stand back and watch things happen ? |

| theres not much they can do.. its extremly rare for kids to get expelled, and if they do its for bashing someone like a teacher.. they get a slap on the wrist for fighting other kids.. or a 3 day suspention and then they come back and do it again...they've tryed, and still are trying youth programs but nothing works.. name and shame is a good idea but i also think that it would influence the kids more.. make them think they got to keep there name as a bad school. |

| You do all make Port Hedland sound a bit rough. My son and his family may be moving there shortly from Scotland. My son will be working for some Gold Mining company which works from there and from Newman. I wonder is the town a decent enough place to live in?(apart from the high school, which does sound a tad overun by neds. What other facilities does Port Hedland have? |

sitickles wrote -> If this happened in the eastern states it would be on the front page of every newspaper
Well considering that a. education is a state government issue and b. the west australian is the only WA paper I find your statement BS to say the least.
The reason it is ignored is more because it is in a rural area of Australia. There is only a small percentage of WA's population there, so again majority of the people in WA don't care (should they??).
I guess the usual way to solve a issue similar to this is work out why the problem exists (lack of discipline, lack of resources, boredom, ineffective teachers, poor leadership, socio-economics, lifestyle, community care factor or influences, lack of rewards, lack of opportunities etc)? Need to know the reason behind the problem before one can fix it. |

we have half a cinema, but most the movies shown are ones that are out on DVD(i do have to admitt they are improving on that know) we have a skate park for the teens one in south is getting a upgrade and theres another one being built in port.. altogether thats $730,000 spent on the skate parks.. we have a Y@JD center..
other then that everyone runs around like wild or they get a full time job to fill in hours..
(if your not to keen on high fuel prices and stuff this aint the place.. for some strange reason they think we've got heaps of money then the city people) |

| Who cares anyway, it's only bloody hedland... The drinking, the violence and the black V white culture is nothing new. The problem is that the bad element in Hedland is rarely punished or punished softly. The bad element continues to roll into town and can behave as it pleases where it pleases. When will the powers at be toughen their stance on anti-social behavior in the north west??? Until they do the good people will continue to move on, the culture will worsen and the place will become unliveable. I was born in and spent my first 20 years of life in Hedland and I love the north west. I will never return for more than a holiday as I refuse to put my family thru it. |

| You are not alone with this problem it is the result of govenments putting the problem in the too hard basket for about the last 25-30 years coupled with activists preaching resentment instead of puting the same effort into bringing their people forward. This coupled with intolerance and political correctness being used to prevent any meaningfull discussion on the subject do not help.Courts could be reminded that they are there to up hold the law of the land not to push misplaced ideoligy. The law is there to protect all people equeally. |

| Reply to email HSHS concern: the school is making amazing changes due to really caring people - students, staff, parents & community. Fighting breaking out in such new circumstances means recognition of a power centre shift. Those dependent on maintaining the status quo are making their last stand. Stay gold! You have wonderful teachers there. |

| My kids go to this school and unless you are aboriginal, you get no special treatment. Classes are continualy disrupted by undisciplined children, both races. white students are being beaten and bashed all the time and the teachers turn a blind eye to it all as they are just as scared as the kids. Wake up people, Hedland High is a joke and has been one for years. Glad to see it close down. 6 months and my kids can leave. Home school is the only option. Kids can't learn in this environment. Black rules and you better believe it. |

I must admit I haven't been to Port Hedland but a lot of the comments seem to be suggesting that a big issue in the school is Aborigines. And well many seem happy to blame Aborigines for the problem.
Is this the mirror of society? For hundred of years 'white' Australia has prosecuted, killed, kidnapped, and eroded the will of Aborigines. Society now continues to blame them for social (or high school) problems and see Aborigines largely in a negative light. Sounds very similar to something that Hitler used to get into power and we all know where that went with the Jews.
Considering Aborigines only make up 2% (or about that) of the Australian population they sure have a lot to answer for don't they!
I guess the problem comes down to that most the time we only see the worse of the Aborigines and forget to focus on those Aborigines that have made something of their life (that is done the 'normal' by white society ... who are we to judge that though?) Yet if we focused on the negatives of 'white' Australia ... bikies, drug dealers, drug takers, domestic violence, child abusers etc. we would have a pretty low opinion of white Australian's too.
Lastly, it interesting that lots of overseas people perceive Aussies as racist because we are quick to blame minority races for our social problems. Also internationalists see Aboriginal issues as a major part of Australian politics, yet it rarely is in the spotlight and never an vote getter. Interesting I think. |

| My son goes to Hedland High and really loves the school a lot and the teachers. He's popular and has never had any problems. Aboriginal people mostly settle family feuds amongst themselves. Well I work as a youth worker with the kids and last went on camp with a an Aboriginal father and kids. I was surprised at the physical strengt and the physicality involved in the play games. They were hunters not long ago, and kids don't understand the point in school. Aboriginal people are sweet natured and do not want to harm. But alcohol and sugar is destroying lives . We need to educate about sugar consumption. A sugarholic becomes an alcoholic or drug addict. Sugar makes you high if you have ADHD which many kids do. Hunters need short bursts of energy. They cannot sit still for hours, the pent up energy needs an outlet. |

| I Agree with you bubs, I go to Hedland High as well, My parents have thought about sending me away because it is so bad but they cant afford to! The school pretends that everything is good from the outside but really to us kids it is like being in jail! We are always watchin our backs so that we dont get in the way of the other kids fighting. The other thing is that the teachers are so used to dealing with the naughty kids that there is no time left for them to teach the ones that actually want to learn. Some of the teachers have been so warned down that they dont have any respect left for us kids and so all they ever do is shout at us even when we do nothing wrong. I dont come from the best home but at least my parents do there best to get me through school, what about all those other kids (white and black) that dont have people to look after them? Who helps them get on the right track? No wonder this town is so disfunctional?!!! |

I went through Hedland High from 1989 to 1993 and what you're describing now is no different to then, unfortunately. It is the place. When I was there we had the cinema (which played new cinema releases) and the rollerdrome in Wedgefield, not that skate parks would have made a difference to me. It's like anywhere, it's what you make it.
In regards to the comment of blaming Aboriginal people for the promblem...GANG mentality is the problem, and one can only observe who the members of the gangs are, and there are a lot of Aboriginal gangs/families. I lived in the Kimberly for years and there was not the same problem there with the Aboriginal people as in Hedland. In the Kimberly I found them to be lovely and friendly (even when drunk), Hedland was a culture shock. They just wanted to punch you for looking at them. But like I said,it is not a new problem, it's a sad problem. When I was there teachers and principals sent their children to Perth to board for High School... |

Hey,
What is wrong with you? I live in Port Hedland and go to South Hedland High school. I am currently doing year 11 TEE which is going quite well. Just for you readers that incident with the knife. No-one found the knife. Also the people who claimed to have been threatened were the big redneck 'tough' guys of the school who are openly rasict (they toned down now)and love nothing more than having a good old 'smash'. But the funniest thing is, i'm white, i have friends in all sections of the school-muslims, the 'blacks' and the 'whites' from years 8-12 and i'm also not afraid to express myself, some people would call me 'emo' to be honest i don't care. But wouldnt that be more of a motive for people to target me, Because im different..? No i get treated just as well as anyone. I'm also friends with those boys who claimed there was a knife AND i'm friends with the guy who apparently drew the knife. The funny thing is now those three are kinda friends.
And just in regards to olbadudley, i have friends down south in perth and rockingham and their fights and actual real race and school wars make our school look so innocent. There are 12 year olds running in 'tagging crews' and running drugs. Sure hedland isnt the greatest place to live, but it isnt really that bad.
Finally, Yosista91.. If there is a fight no-one is watching their back. Everyone is sprinting towards it trying to get a better view, then for the next 2-3 days its the 'talk of the town' so to speak, so instead of all you people pretending that life is 'oh so hard' and getting your 5 seconds of fame on the internet just be honest. Just tying a few loose ends.
Thankyou for reading

| Good On you for putting this straight. I left Port Hedland after 7 years and now returned. I love it here. We have the best community and a strong one too! For all of you who have had 1 bad experience - I have had a thousand good ones. Life is what you make it. We have lots of friends in all cultures from all over the world and the locals too. Kids will have their fights no matter where they are. Our kids just came from a very expensive private school where kids rubbed faeces all over the toilet walls and picked on the smarter kids. A man was kicked to death while they sleeping on a footpath near a shopping centre and kids ran amuck all night and they weren't aboriginal. I am proud to live here, and whatever this place may lack in facilities, it makes up for it in character! I also know that the high school did go through a rough patch, but its over now and I wont have a problem sending my kids there in the following years. |
