Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
WA has had 1 trial and three referendums on daylight saving and the result each time has been no-do we keep doing it till someone ,some where, gets the answer they want; do we??

WE cant 'save daylight'-no matter what we do-the daylight still remains the same.
For those who want to make use of more of it outside-get up an hour earlier ,in the cool;while those who wish to sleep in;in the rarer cool times of summer; are still asleep.

We are a large contintent-like America;they have numerous time zones and sometimes 3 different zones in one state.

With modern technology-there should be no problem with contacting the eastern states.Much of WA's business is carried on with our near neighbours, who are on a similar time to ourselves.
If companies have a problem keeping up with the eastern states-stagger working hours, so some start an hour earlier and others finish an hour later;that should cover it and people will be able to choose which end of the day, they prefer to sleep in.
Most places who have daylight saving ;it has been found, that in the heat of summer-the majority of people come home and spend it in the airconditioning anyway-leading to higher use of electricy and more drain on the power grid, at these times.
Then theres the mums trying to get children to sleep while its still light and very hot and having to wake them up in the coolest part of the nite when they will be having thier most restful sleep.
And the workers like my daughter ,who get up to serve those who start early-she gets up at 5 and will have to get up at 4-which means instead of going to bed at what is now 9-she will have to go at what is now 8-while still hot and light.
Then the dairy farmers who will have to get up even earlier and the cows that will have to come in earlier-to meet the milk truck ,that has to meet altered factory schedules. The school children travelling on the bus home with no airconditioning in the hottest part of the day-in the country-often for an hour

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
No, I don't want daylight savings. Have already voted 'NO' three times!
I am usually up just before dawn so that I can enjoy the coolness while on my morning 1 hour walk...I hope this daylight saving doesn't mean I have to hang around for an hour before I can go out.
Youngest granddaughter still has an afternoon nap - daylight saving will mean she lays down during one of the hottest parts of the day with daylight saving. Children will also have to come home from school in the hottest part of the day. I know most have cars to taxie them to and from school but for those without, walking in that heat will not be enjoyable - I know because I used to walk my son home from school when the heat was radiating off the pavement and burning the backs of my legs. With our 'normal' hours there is a chance that the sea breeze will be in by that time.
Then of course there is bedtime - still hot and who can get to sleep when it is hotter than normal.
I can remember the English summer time and daylight saving. have you tried going to sleep when it is still light, or when you can hear your older friends still outside and having fun. I don't think I got to sleep at my 'usual time' in those days!

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
The majority of people I speak to want day light saving.
I would say approx. 10 people for to 1 against bit this is on the coast, obviously on voting day it will be a lot closer, but I believe the majority will vote for Day light saving, after a 3 year trial they will see the healthy life style it offers.
Anyway lets have the trial and vote, interesting to see the outcome.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
As a point againts daylight saving, many of you seem eager to raise the fact that, for school children, it will be hotter when travelling on the bus and/or walking home.

Public transport for students in Perth is mostly constricted to High School students. So, have you asked how many of them want daylight savings? I can have a pretty good, educated, guess at what that might be. In fact, my little brother and sister, both in Primary school, also want daylight savings - for the reasons that you would assume to be because they are, of course, children.

Now, I hate to generalise, but my brother tells me of concersations with his friends and those headed up by the teacher in class - so it seems a valid indication. As for High School students, while I am at uni, I work part time in an environment with a number of high school students for, yes, all support daylight savings.

I can't see a problem with having another referendum. We have the chance to vote for another government every so often, so why not for an issue such as daylight savings? The community in general may have a shift in attitudes, while a new wave of voters get enrolled every year, so another referendum seems perfectly valid.

I should add, that I think a referendum is a wasteful idea all together. We vote in for government to make important decisions accordingly, not so they can pass everything on to referendum. Now, in certain circumstances, I don't mind but in most cases, it is common ground that people are afraid of change. This being the case, I support the notion of a 3 year trial.

I don't like the idea of having another referendum. They cost a lot of money so why not keep them for something important and then institute a minimum length of time till another referendum on the same issue can be called.

I find it surprising how passionate some people are about this issue. I'd prefer not to have daylight saving as I can't sleep at night when it's too hot but I think the state has much more important issues to deal with.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
jay - maybe they should have put that up as part of their policies then so we all knew what we are in for!

but then again its ok to have democracy when it serves its purpose but when the democracy doesn't work in your favour then just go ahead and bring it in anyway!

If it is going to get voted in then let the people have a say.

I am against daylight saving and believe the argument that it gives you more time after work to do things is not the best argument because if people organise themselves then they can get most things done.

bovine - fair enough its expensive but then why do people keep bringing it up?? maybe the pollies can pull their heads out of the sand and can use it as part of their election campaign (or are they scared people won't vote for them)

rosemaryandyou: "I am usually up just before dawn so that I can enjoy the coolness while on my morning 1 hour walk...I hope this daylight saving doesn't mean I have to hang around for an hour before I can go out."

That depends on whether you wake up at a particular time every day or whether the imminent onset of dawn causes you to wake up, whatever time it may be. If the latter, then DLS won't make a blind bit of difference to your morning routine.

bovine_blue: "I'd prefer not to have daylight saving as I can't sleep at night when it's too hot but I think the state has much more important issues to deal with."

If it's a hot night, you won't be able to sleep, no matter what time zone you're in.

kingerikcantona: "jay - maybe they should have put that up as part of their policies then so we all knew what we are in for!"

This piece of legislation actually came from the Opposition. The State government leapt on it to deflect public attention from all the other things they've been screwing up. That said, at least they're doing something right!

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
On Saturday morning my baby girl woke us up at 4:40. To my mind, this is "the middle of the night". However, it was twilight outside, the sun was thinking about coming up. Why do the Darksiders think we should be up and about at this ridiculous hour??

On Sunday afternoon, we had a barbie with family and friends. We started cooking at 5pm - not by any stretch of the imagination a late dinner - and yet it was pitch black outside by the time dessert was done with. We - and I'm sure many others - have al fresco areas for precisely this reason; why do the Darksiders not want us to see our outdoors when we want to use it?

The time in Perth could do with being shifted forward an hour throughout the year, and two hours in summer. But that's just my opinion.

If people are expected to be up and about with the sun and in bed when it gets dark, it is no wonder Perth is known as Dullsville.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
if the clocks are an hour forward during winter it is going to be damn dark when you get up in the morning!

If you want to be closer to the eastern states how about moving there?

The business sense that we need to be an hour or 2 hrs closer to eastern states so we can do business, to me is silly not with the internet and the idea of flexible hours you can always start work earlier unless your company deals with Asia where most of the key places are on the same timeline.

I have BBq's at 5pm and the sun going down at 6:40 doesn't bother us at all.

oh and moving of the clock ain't going to change the tag Dullsville, if you want to fix that then change the atmosphere, get millions of people living here so that it becomes the bussling city like melbourne or Sydney, improve Public transport, create more pubs and clubs and restaurants and so on and maybe we won't be dullsville. BUt then again I don't find Perth dull at all after all it is what you make of it and if you don't like doing anything and expect if someone gives you an extra hour that will somehow make things happen for you then well you must be dreaming.

I ain't tucked inside my house, sitting outside.

I love how you think that putting the hour forward will make us more like Melbourne or Sydney

I just hope you are not too disappointed when you drive down the freeway that you see Perth not Melbourne :)

ausgal - yeah Melbourne is great for a visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

I love Perth but the worst thing is the prices to go to places for holidays - you can only go down south or up to Kalbarri/Exmouth so many times before having to jump on a plane.

True kingerinka, have you been down south some very nice places there to see.
But yes you are correct Perth is the most remote capital city in the world.
And yes if you want to live in Perth get used to plane travel.
Perth has a dullsville reputation especially with tourists they find our restricted trading hours and lack of entertainment poor. Not many tourists come back to Perth again. Unlike Sydney or London where even after many visits you can still find something new and entertaining.
