Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
"To rashly condemn my comments here with some form of negative metaphor suggests sheepish narrow mindedness."
========================= ===================

Unfortunatley, dreamweaver, your argument opened by sounding like it was going to be reasoned and based on fact, but it gradually fell into your own trap of "sheepish narrow mindedness", as emotion rather than argument crept in.

MOST companies run 24/7? No they don't. Do you have support for that. My company goes home at 5, as do all others I know, both sides of the country. Surveys of WA's top businessmen have cited a DLS'less WA as an impediment to doing business in this state. That is a fact. True, with email and on-line computers, WA can send communications at any time, but that just means they are in the "in-box" in the Eastern States in the morning. That is not the same as dealing in real time. Without DLS, WA staff get in in the morning and try to ring the Eastern States and they are mostly out to lunch. There's only about three hours of common business time. All the modern gadgets can't help WA to communicate in real time.

Yes, these message boards do reflect opinion, but typically only those with strong opinions either way bother to post, so it's hard to gauge public opinion from forums such as this.

As you say, quite correctly, the "selfish" tag could easily be levied on either side, so that's irrelevant.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
i still do not understand these "advantages" of daylight savings... most of europe is considering dropping it as human cost is much higher than previously realised. part of canada do not have it so is not whole usa... why oz must have it?!?

now - where these "saved" hours come from? will we have 25hrs during summer??? and only 23 in winter??? or other way around...

now, there is several companies dealing with usa, europe and totally different timeframes - somehow this do not disturb them... my son's company is ordering from eastern states as well as have customers in eastern states, several good acquintances have wholesale businessess and all of them somehow manage and oppose daylight savings...

personally, i hate it! i am "out of he whack" for few weeks after time change!

just move it forward, backwards, sideways, i do not really care! just leave it after alone...

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
feralflea: typically remove the part of importance, focus on an element to condemn thereby loose the plot - so human or is that "so politician"

Let us not blame the time gap on DLS as you verify this ploy is to sync with the East to keep the 2hr gap as covered by many in the past. Why stop there lets totally sync WA with the East which will fix those complaints of missing the delivery.

Everyone misses that the East starts 2hr before WA and I am sure they can read a fax so it is on its way while your in WA traffic. In real terms my previous work mate son-in-law deals with the East, Sinapore, etc long before he arrives at the office. With individuals like that closing deals who needs DLS to narrow the time gap.

As for a company working 24/7 goto Kwinana strip and see many as I work there myself. In Perth city most unlikely, but not impossible.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
Dreamweaver, I'm only quoting the results of a survey conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants on WA business leaders, and it was their opinion that WA not having DLS in unison with the eastern states is a definite impediment to doing business in WA.
However, if you believe that you know more about what is important to WA businesses that the actual business leaders do, then that goes beyond the point where one can have a rational discussion. The companies typically working 24/7 are companies with around the clock plants - that does not mean that the administration and management who communicate with the eastern states, work 24/7 - they work normal business hours. I have experience in this area, and this is why I know the results of the survey to be true. You can't dismiss facts because you don't like them or just because you might have a piece of trivial evidence to the contrary.
Yes you are correct, that there may be advantages in dealing with some of our Asian neighbours, but how many WA companies have head offices in Asia? A few yes, but no where near as many as have head offices in the eastern states.

Moving into sync with the eastern states is an absurdity, which no one is suggesting.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
someone can correct me but I believe the USSR-has 12 time zones and the US 5!

As we are about the same distance from East to West; as the US is and only have 3-whats the big deal!

Time has to do with longitude and the 'rising and setting of the sun'-not the trade with other states!

Midday should be midday-wherever you are!

As to trade-I garauntee ;we carry on more trade with the countries to the North of us;who are closer to us in time then the ES.

It may be inconvenient to the ES;well some of it-QLD doesnt have DLS-nor does the NT.
Only the little bit down the corner does.

To the West:as far as trade goes;it is probably more expedient to be closer in time to Asian markets-who we probably do more trade with; than the ES.
Why dont the ES drop an hour closer to us and hence to our major trading partners, to the west and north.?

After all-all that is beyond the ES-is NZ;nice as it is-but ti doesnt seem to have to bother much with Aus and after that;you drop off the edge of the earth and get eaten by dragons-or it all becomes yesterday;if you can believe in something as fanciful as that!

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
But if you have a Referendum, Carpenter will just ignore the results and do whatever he likes! So much for serving the people! Carpenter works for me, and you, and the rest of the people of WA. If a Referendum result says NO then he should abide by that - not just introduce a new policy.
If he doesn't like the result of the Referendum, then he should hold ANOTHER Referendum, and keep holding them until either he gets the result he wants or he is voted out of office. He can't just do as he pleases.

Disgusting!

Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest even though you are talking Daylight Saving and I am talking Extended Shopping Hours. I am not fussed either way about the shopping hours, but I am furious with Carpenter for thinking he can just ignore the results of a Referendum. He certainly won't get my vote next election purely based on this performance.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
To those who say there are no economic benefits associated with DLS,
Why do you think governments keep pushing DLS down our throats? Do you think it is because there are no economic or other benefits in doing so?
Again, it seems that successions of politicians and business leaders know nothing about econimics of running a business, but the anti-DLS brigade do.

If you personally prefer the hour in the morning to the hour in the evening, then that is quite a legitimate reason to vote against DLS, but there is no point saying that benefits that gemuinely exist are not-existant simply because you don't like the argument. You can dismiss a pro-DLS argument as unimportant if you have the facts to support it, but you can't say that the argument does not exist when it clearly does.

Community divided over daylight saving
15th October 2008, 12:15 WST

Click here to find out more!
The Perth community is divided over daylight saving, according to an online poll.

More than 730 people have responded to a question posted on thewest.com.au which asked if readers were looking forward to the start of daylight savings.

Of those, 412, or 56 per cent, said they were looking forward to daylight saving, while 320 (or 44 per cent) said they were not.

Sunday, October 26 will mark the beginning of the third and final year of the controversial daylight saving trial, introduced by the former Labor State Government.

The West have usually always posted negative results for daylight saving since the trial started, so it is quite a surprise they have even posted this story.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
oh welcome back to an old freind.

Yes lets be backward and turn our clocks to stay in line with the eastern states(Except for the major part of it-Queensland!)-lets forget about the large percentage of the world we trade with ;who are closer to our western time zone then we are to the NewZealanders -or those still in yesterday; who reside over the water from NZ.

In this day and age-what a retrograde step; when we ship so many commodities to people more in tune with our time zone!

It would be a safe bet that we have more direct contact with Eastern States companies, in terms of business, than those throughout the rest of Asia.

Napier,

perhaps you could explain why DLS is considered to be progressive. Why are we 'behind the times' if we don't want it?
