Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
"west austalians have already been asked on three separate occasions 1975, 1984 and 1992...every time the answer has been a resounding no..."

i wouldnt call it a resounding no. each referendum has been 46%, 46% and 47% in favour of daylight saving. say a million people voted in 1992. that means 470,000 voted for it and 530,000 voted against it. so 60,000 more people voted against it. might sound alot but when you put it into context thats about 2 or 3 suburbs of perth. which is really not much. i would say it was more of a whisper :P thats why the government is asking again, because it has been so close.

"thats why the government is asking again, because it has been so close."

but the government is not asking the people..the government are putting this into place without the consideration of the peoples opinions...the reason being...the government knows that the people of w.a. will vote against daylight saving...

if the government were so sure the vote would be a yes...they would have a referendum on this issue...would they not?

people in general dont ask question when they dont like the answers they know they will receive...

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
its simply not necessary in w.a. to have daylight saving...in fact i would suggest it is far better to be inline with the asian countries in relation to business and trade...(please refer to the info previously posted)

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
last time i checked we were getting a referendum... they arnt just putting it in place, we are having a trial and a referendum after. if the answer is yes they will make it permanent and if the answer is no they will abolish it.

I am proud to be a West Aussie too, and the fact is we NEED daylight saving.

Dont give me this crap that its too hot here or we have enough daylight. Rural NSW is hotter than Perth, as is most of the southern part of the USA. They all have daylight saving.

ic_lady,

In respects to your claim that Perth is progressive, their is arguably more to being 'progressive' than those advancements arising from a current, and not permanent, mining boom.

With all due respect, what period do you think constitutes as a valid 'trial' - one that allows us all as voters (new and old) to gauge the advantages and disadvantages of daylight savings time?

jaykaye...

i have not ever mentioned "perth" as being progressive...each and everyone one of my posts has stipulated very clearly "western australia" as being a progressive state..

i think what i find so disheartening about many posts here is the fact that people are sarcastically criticising the state in which they live..there is no pride...in as far as people saying how backward this state is...your "w.a." progressive???"...was to me seen as a putdown to the entire state of western australia...

and i do keep asking the questions which not one person has answered yet...why do some of the eastern states abide by and english tradition of daylight saving?

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
jaykaye...after three referendums do you really think it necessary to ask the question again?

please...may i ask where are the benefits to having daylight savings in this state?...why do west australians "need" daylight saving...

the theory of how people will be able to spend time with their families is quite ridiculous...one does not need daylight to spend time with families...nor friends for that matter...

"I really find it a bit of a stretch that an extended 'daylight' period of 1 hour will cause people, who haven't already done so, to invest heavily in airconditiong units, swimming pools etc."

i will also come back to your post above...the usage of airconditioners and fans will definitely be more...more cars on the roads driving to "visit" their friends (so they can socialise in daylight hours)...people driving their cars to the beach to pools..etc etc...this will all contribute negatively towards our environment...

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
there are far more important issues which need addressing and definitely would bring about huge benefits to the people of w.a. for one reason or another...

to name just a few
mandatory child abuse/neglect reporting within western australia

extended shopping hours

closer scrutiny on dcd decision making

more refuges (emergency accommodation) for families...single dads with children...domestic violence refuges...single men/women refuges...workshops/commu nity services to address the issue of domestic violence for men (in relation to being the perpetrator)...

but daylight saving...no...if someone can show me that this issue takes or equals the priority of those ive mentioned plus also give me logical reasons as to how the people of western australia would benefit economically or even socially I will gracefully concede defeat :-)

-ic_lady

Agreed. Let us have daylight savings and that be the end of it.

I don't think their are any economic issues that arise as the result of an hour shift in our clocks. I do think the social benefits, namely an extra hour of daylight following 'average' working hours, may outwiegh those against, but that is all.

Why not have it?

-ic_lady

I still say that is a stretch - nothing supports the notion that such 'extra' usage over an hour will have any real effect on our environment.

I do find it interesting that you note 'more people will 'visit' their friends...(though not sure if a note of sarcasm was intended, in which case, that detracts from 'your' environmental claim more.

-ic_lady

Isn't it reasonable to suggest that more time is spent outdoors in the daylight/dawn as opposed to night? e.g. you ever try playing football (soccer) with mates/family at the park when it is dark?

On a side note, slightly less serious, a crow woke me up at the crack of dawn a couple of mornings ago...wasn't even 5 yet. At least with daylight savings I get an extra hours sleep (remember, it is all about me) :)

-ic_lady

I think, for the benefit of the state, that it should come under scrutiny when necessary. My 'W.A. progressive?' remark points to the fact that Perth (being the capital city) is, for a great deal of the time, dull. No extended shopping, no daylight savings, little in the way of quality clubs/pubs, relatively high crime, early closure of many restaurants, belltower is a pathetic excuse for a 'landmark' etc....

On the other hand, we have a beautiful natural attractions, our beaches are wonderful, our city/state is clean and Perth Glory ruled the NSL and will rule the A-league :)

I think Perth and WA are fantastic, daylight saving or not. WA is not backwards, it's just for people who enjoy a more relaxed pace of life.

totally correct..thats why people want and move to WA is that it is not like the other states. It has a laid back attitude.. If people dont like it here.. move to the other states where they have what they want

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
Silly question for you all...So if we put our clocks an hour forward so that we can spend more time with our families in the outdoors does that mean the tv stations will put all their high rating progr@ms at a later time eg: news at 8pm cos everyone will be outside doing whatever in the light???

somehow I don't think putting the clocks an hour forward is going to push people to pull their fingers out and make time for those thought of things
