Daylight Saving Reply to this message
I see the push is being made again for daylight saving. What does everybody think on this issue?

Alan Carpenter and Opposition Leader Paul Omodei are under pressure to allow a conscience vote on daylight saving after Independent MP John D’Orazio said yesterday he would push for a three-year trial.

If the Bill, which is expected to be read in Parliament today, is supported by MPs, the trial could begin as early as December 1. Mr D’Orazio said he hoped that debate could begin on the legislation as early as Wednesday, if the Government or Opposition allocated time in Parliament.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
Time to take down the curtains before they fade and stock the freezer with milk before it all curdles!

Whilst mucking about with clocks is a pain in the ar$e, the benefits obtained by having the extra hour to conduct business and spend with family/friends makes daylight saving a winner in so much as I am concerned.

Just my opinion.
Cheers :)

The Govt is STILL dragging the chain, DESPITE the meeting they had on July 13 this year they STILL haven't fixed it up. The sun is STILL rising at 5am in Victoria, NSW and the ACT while Tasmania have had the right hours for GOD KNOWS HOW MANY YEARS

IT REALLY PISSES ME OFF WHEN GOVTs DON'T SEE SENSE AND FIX PROBLEMS SO OBVIOUS AS THE SUN RISING AT UNGODLY HOURS OF THE MORNING

As long as the politicians don't mind me dropping my 4 kids off at 9pm at night because they don't want to sleep as the sun is up, then go for it. Otherwise, not interested.

With the current situation of global warming and hole in the ozone layer- it is advisable to consider the effects daylight saving could have on this. Think about it. The issue isn't simply about business and family- there is more to it than that.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
Over the years the people of this state have told the pollies 3 times- WE DON'T WANT IT!!! But are they listening... As usual Nope! That 1 hour shift means that parents will be picking up school kids in the hottest part of the day. Workers will be traveling home when temperatures are higher than they would be an hour later.... Airconds will have to be run longer and lights will have to be used more in the mornings. Sounds like the power company (whatever its name is this week) needs a cash injection. Statistics from the UK and US show that in the week after each change of time your chances of being involved in a car accident also increase, because of the time shift. Pollies got shares in panel beaters too have they?

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
Hmmmn...a day has 24hrs right?

Regardless of whether clocks are shifted forwards or backwards there are still the same 24hrs in a day.

Consequently, a/c's will still be used if its too hot, heaters will still be used if its too cold, the curtains will still get the same amount of sunlight, kids will still play in the sunshine with appropriate precautions (hats and sunscreen), cows will still get milked twice a day etc etc.

What does change is the seasonal variation in the number of daylight hours due to movement in the Earth's rotation.

Consequently, there are more available hours of daylight in summer than there are in winter. ie the sun rises earlier in the summer than it does in winter.

Ergo by moving clocks forward, you have the opportunity to take advantage of those daylight hours by doing something productive of your choice...be it work, spending time with the family, whatever you choose to do.

Personally, I prefer to sleep when it's dark and be up and active when its not.

When I'm on R&R, I dont really care what time the clock says it is. After all, a clock is just an arbitrary man-made measure of time, and not time itself. A day is still a day regardless of what labels we use to denote various parts of it.

To that end whilst it is a nuisance to move clocks (forwards or backwards), I'd rather take advantage of the daylight hours available and do something productive...as opposed to sleeping or sitting about waiting for shops/businesses to open because some arbitrary man-made label on a clock says its too early for me to be up and active!

Just my opinion.
Cheers :)

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
my reply is quite simple. if they cannot read the time on the clock over there maybe they should ask queenslanders. we have been through that road and its quite stupid. a democracy is where the majority of the people state their desires of direction and they have already expressed their wish. if parlementarians dont service the majority they should resign from parlement.

[with todays communication system we DO NOT NEED DAYLIGHT SAVING think of the rest of the state not just city people

Sheesh. This is why I think parliament should just bite the bullet, forget the referendum, and introduce daylight savings on a permanent basis. Some people still don't understand what it's all about.

So, Western Australia has more daylight hours than any other state? That's quite remarkable. For that to be the case, in summer the entire state would need to be at a lower latitude than the rest of the country. Then, perhaps by accelerated continental drift or something, the situation would have to be reversed come winter.

I assure you that wherever you are in the world - whether you are in Antarctica or on the equator, you will get the the same number of daylight hours in a year - exactly half of the total number of hours.

I think what you're trying to say is that Perth has more hours of sunshine per annum than any other state capital - but that's not the same thing. Don't worry, though - the WA Farmer's Federation managed to make the same error.

"Today's communication system", as you put it, unfortunately do not negate the fact that real-time dealings with the east coast are impossible after lunch time.

Your closing statement is most telling - daylight saving can not actually give us more daylight hours - I thought that would have gone without saying. In effect it merely moves a hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
We have had three referendums on this subject already and each time 'NO' has been the answer.
We have enough sunshine, not more. I for one would much rather get up at 5am when it is reasonably cool and start work then, not when it is that much hotter.

[We have enough sunshine, not more]

This is the sort of comment that makes us here in Western Australia the laughing stock of the rest of the country.

Daylight saving will NOT result in more hours of sunshine each day, faded curtains, or confused cows. Why do people find that so difficult to comprehend?

Anyone who finds the issue too difficult to master only needs leave their clocks exactly as they are now during the daylight saving period and the rest of the state will catch up to them in the autumn when they are turned back.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
Western Australia needs to wake up to daylight saving and the 21st century. Along with our restrictive trading hours the lack of daylight saving makes Perth and the rest of WA the Dullsville capital of Australia. I lived in Sydney for many years and know for sure that Daylight saving allows more recreational and family time which is important to me. If you dont like daylight saving you do not like time with your family and friends.

[Can anybody explain the arguement that you get more time to spend with the family? Do you get to leave work early or something?]

What it actually means is that you get more time to socialise in daylight after work. For most people in the state, the working (or school) day falls somewhere between 8am and 6pm. Equally, most people go to work or school first and socialise or pursue sports/hobbies later.

So, how many people really need the sun to be out before 6am? Equally, how many people would be able to take advantage of an extra hour of daylight after work? Outdoor sports clubs can run sessions till 8, 9pm without switching on the floodlights; you can enjoy a walk in the park or on the beach after dinner; you can get home from work and still have time to potter in the garden - the possibilities are endless.

I can assure you that the sun will never be up at 9pm. On the longest day of the year, the 21st of December, the sun sets at 7:22pm. Under daylight saving, it will set at 8:22pm. I wish people would do their homework before they come up with statements like this - or before they vote in referenda, for that matter...

Ohhhhh...I completely missed this corker earlier. You do realise that under daylight savings it will be cooler at, say, 8am, than it would be without it...right?

You are fortunate if you have the option of starting work at 5am. I doubt that many of my colleagues would be too keen on the idea.

By the by, for those who are still convinced that Perth receives more summer daylight than other state capitals, I suggest you have a look at a map of Australia. Granted, it defies intuition to an extent, but the city that receives the most summer daylight is in fact Hobart, and the city that receives the least is Darwin.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
What it means is that with more evening daylight we can spend more time carrying out activities with our family and friends. Beach, park, sport etc. and not sitting in front of a television like a mindless zombie. I say again if you dont like daylight saving you dont care for time with your family or friends. Enjoy your children instead of getting then to bed out your way. What sort of statement is it to make that you want your children out of the way as soon as possible.

Re:Daylight Saving Reply to this message
Re the stupidity of daylight saving. To me it is a complete waste of time. I now see voting as a complete waste of time. The politicans who have said yes to this ridiculous have shown total disregard to the people.

It is just a further move into capitalism, and control.
They have the money and the resources and as usual forget about the everyday person.

In summer, we have almost 12 hours of hot sunlight. It is a blessed relief when sunset occurs. Now we have to put up with more of it. This doesn't bother the rich though, they have aircon, insulation, and swimming pools.
Frankly, the 75% of us who voted no on daylight saving should boycott it. Don't vote for the politicans either who have said yes to this stupidity.
Australia does not need daylight saving. Daylight saving should be abolished. That would be the correct thing to do.
What will happen next? the politicans will want to advance the clocks to be in time with the rest of the world...let's see...12 or 13 hours to be in line with America, 8 hours to be in line with England..hell why don't they just pass an inane law stating one time zone.
Bit more ludicrous control.
