Re:Anti Hoon Laws Reply to this message
A 19-year-old Karratha man has this afternoon become the first driver to have their car crushed under WA's tough anti-hoon laws.

Const. Nathaniel Kett said that the man's 1992 Mitsubishi Lancer had been crushed at about 2pm after police made a successful application to a Magistrate to have the vehicle destroyed following the driver's third conviction under the hoon legislation.

He said the driver had on September 18 been convicted of reckless driving and driving without a motor driver's licence and had also lost his licence for three years and been given heavy fines.

Const. Kett said police received a report from a member of the public that the man was driving recklessly on the North West Coastal Highway between Karratha and Roeburne on June 11. Police then intercepted the Lancer and charged the driver.

Police Minister Rob Johnson this afternoon said that the vehicle was valued at less than $1000.

"This is a very significant day, and a very poignant day to send a very clear message, a very graphic message, to those people who want to behave irresponsibly on our streets," he said.

"The driver had been convicted on four occasions of reckless driving and driving without a licence, so quite clearly he deserved to have his car crushed.

"I think when people see this particular vision on TV tonight and realise what could happen to their prized vehicle they will drive more sensibly in the future - if they don't they can substitute their car for the one we've seen today."

Mr Johnson said the Government would not tolerate hoons on the State's roads and he expected more cars to be crushed as a result of the legislation, which was passed earlier this year.

"The biggest issue that I have had for many years now as a local member of Parliament are hoons," he said.

"People hate them because they not only disturb people's peace and quiet, they tear up their lawns but worse than all of that, they actually put other people's lives at risk."

The first car to be confiscated under the new laws, in May this year, was not crushed.

Mr Johnson said the engine was donated to a TAFE college and the body was provided to SES volunteers for training.

Well Gee...crushing a kids less-than-$1000_car is really showing him eh? Wonder how long it'll take him to scrape up enough money for another...2 weeks? 1 month?

My reply is that i wonder how much value, what the pigs said to the kid for him to re-offend again 4 times shows that there was no proper supervised councelling!!

Four times the pigs missed the opportunity to re-educate?

Did the pigs and the boys swap stories or just flick thru "Street Machine" ?

Nothing of value was said.

From experience i know these kids get a attitude turn around when they do an advanced driving course or track work.

Makes you wonder how well it was dealt with?

Didn't take long for my question to be answered....

The first driver to have his car crushed under WA’s tough anti-hoon laws has been charged for driving without a licence.

Police allege the 19-year-old man was driving on The Boardway, in Ellenbrook, on Sunday morning and he provided police with a false name.

Further inquiries identified the man, who was driving while his license was suspended.

The man’s 1992 Mitsubishi Lancer had been crushed 10 days ago after police made a successful application to a Magistrate to have the vehicle destroyed following the driver’s third conviction under the hoon legislation.

The vehicle he was driving on Sunday has been impounded for 28 days.

The man has been charged with no authority to drive and provide false name and is due to appear in the Midland Magistrate’s Court today.
