As for the Osborne Park cafe strip...Cafe Amaretto on the corner is still going strong.
IMO the food is adequate, but I did go to a little place just behind there some years ago Villa Bianci or Cafe Bianci...something like that anyway.
Was very good back then and I'd certainly recommend it as being worth at least one visit, although things may have changed since then so no guarantees eh!
Also saw a newish Lebanese restaurant flashing up neon signs nest to the Osborne Park Hotel...never been there but could be worth an exploratory visit?
Cheers :) |

I'm kinda getting slack with my dining out of late...sumthin to do with an 8wk old bub yadda yadda etc
Anyway, the prettier half and I managed to escape for a few hours the other day leaving little-un V2.0 with Grandad.
Being a lurvely sunny day, we opted for a stroll along the fishing boat harbour promenade in Freo before settling into Joe's Fish Shack for a lunchtime feed.
Joe's has been around forever and is prolly better known for the takewaway side which competes against Ciccerello's and Kailis Bros for the tourist "fish n chip" experience.
The restaurant side is quite a large venue sp@r$ely decorated with fishing paraphernalia of both the local and kitsch varieties...it largely resembles a BIG function room although the area facing the harbour as seen through the large rustic wooden windows is pleasant enough.
Silver service, table linen, and porcelain crockery are NOT the go here...think more 1960's laminate tables n chairs, paper napkins, and laid back friendly service :)
Food offerings are seafood oriented with several types of fish with chips/salad although there is meat, chicken, and pasta there as well.
I was pleasantly suprised to note there is more than one seafood platter on offer which caters for both individual or multiple diners.
We opted for the top shelf platter containing crayfish, fish, salt n pepper squid, prawn skewers, chilli mussels, sour dough bread, and saffron rice in a lettuce cup bowl.
The prettier half not being a big fan of mussels, we asked to swap this for an extra helping of fish...no worries!
We also opted for a bottle of SSB...I cant remember what it was except that it was nothing fancy and did the job ok.
Very glad we didnt order an entree because the platter was ENORMOUS!!!
We both stuffed ourselves senseless and still managed to fill 2 takeaway containers full of leftovers to bring home for the dog.

The total bill was ~$155 being $120 for the platter and ~$35 for the wine.
This was reduced to ~$125 on presentation of an entertainment card representing GREAT value for what we received.
The service was reasonably attentive, friendly, and not overbearing...nothing was too much trouble and our requests were easily accomodated without fuss.
Overall, I'd give Joe's 7/10.
It's not on par with Char Char Bull and has to agressively compete against stiff competition who also have internal dining rooms (Kailis/Cicerello's etc).
It was a tasty lunch of plain simple fare on a sunny day kickin back watchin the world go by...both on land & over the water too!
I can certainly think of worse ways to spend an afternoon, so thanks goes to the staff for making our "kid free time" so enjoyable.
Happy Dining :) |
