I think ausgal is just dark on WA's restrictions on sex workers,
she'd rather stay open 24/7. |

Just curious what has changed didn't we have a referendum on this issue a couple of years ago? The results gave the pollies a resounding NO to extended trading as well as 7-days trading??
Is this wedge politics by Barnett he could have voted yes when the Labor gov tried to pass it. |

a) The referendum was daft. They always are.
b) It wasn't a resounding no vote. |

Some shops close at 5PM. Others don't. If you are a small business you can trade longer hours, that is until you employ more than a certain number of people, at which point you must close early.
Then there are the designated tourist areas, which allow retailers inside the areas to trade longer. These areas have next to nothing to do with flow of tourists.
Seems kind of silly, doesn't it. |

And it's not all WA - just Perth.
Most areas in WA, such as Bunbury, Kalgoorlie, Karratha etc. have deregulated hours - it's just the capital city.
Ironically, the political party (The Nationals) that might traditionally serve these areas, have voted against deregulated trading.
Funny eh. |

They just did a survey of way more ;than the few; they based the recent one , that was pulling FOR extended trading hours.
The reuslt was 99% AGAINST longer hours-the 1% for - were management.
The people surveyed were shop assistants!!
Funny that!!
Like someone said -lets have banks and post offices and govt offices open till 9 ,as well and on Sunday!
Many of us would like to use them when it is more convenient for us-or just when we feel like it! |

You want it, lobby for it.
Otherwise, nobody has raised the issue of any serious demand for those sectors to remain open longer (outside of banks, which offer all facilities online 24/7).
And, as I've said over and over, the retail sector works independently of the finance sector - so any comparisons are pointless.
As for that survey, I'd challenge it's legitimacy. Where was it taken? Who was it taken by? What was the question(s) asked? What were the demographics of the shop assistants? Since when were shop assistants representative of the wider community?
Come on people. |

personally what angered me was Barnett's dismissal of the 2005 trading hours referendum saying, "all it did was just reflect people's view at that time and isn't relevant now...."
if that's the case.. then get rid of referendums all together.. let the party that has the mandate do whatever they want and if we the voters don't like it we can vote them back into unemployment at the next election.... |

Can we please?
We have elections every 5 years. Why should a referendum decision be set in stone (and let's face it, the referendum decision was the wrong one). |

Here's a link showing just how convoluted, and frankly stupid, Western Australia's trading act is.
