The Premier Colin Barnett has announced plans to repeal Labor's cannabis laws within a fortnight.
Mr Barnett made the commitment to change the laws at the last election.
He says the new legislation will make it illegal to cultivate cannabis plants, and the legal possession limit will be reduced from 30 grams to 10 grams.
The laws will also make it illegal to sell cannabis smoking implements.
Mr Barnett also reaffirmed plans to introduce laws giving police greater powers to stop and search people for weapons without having to prove grounds of suspicion.
The powers would apply to designated areas requested by the Police Commissioner, such as Northbridge or the Scarborough beachfront.
Mr Barnett admits the move will raise concerns about the possible infringement of civil liberties.
He says it is sad that violence and anti-social behaviour in Perth has reached a point where the laws are necessary.
"It is giving quite extraordinary powers to police but police will operate under their own guidelines and protocols," he said.
"It will not be abused."
The Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan has welcomed the proposed new laws.
He says officers will no longer be required to have suspicion that a person is carrying a weapon or drugs in order to search them.
"Well we're obviously looking for weapons, we're obviously looking for drugs, they're the two main things we would be looking for as part of the legislation," he said.
"We will be using metal detectors, particularly the hand held type of metal detector in this type of search as well."

Does anybody else have a huge problem with that, especially the part that states police will no longer be required to have suspicion that a person is carrying weapons or drugs to search them?!?!?
Barnett is an absolute fool. |

I don't suppose their 'cost-cutting initiative' had anything to do with that? No, no of course not..... |

I whole heartedly support the government getting tough on crime. One problem the prisons we have are all full. When and where are we going to build some new ones?
My suggestion is tent city prisons along the NT boarder and the prisoners put in work gangs and sent out after Cane Toads. |

My suggestion is a tent city prison in Kings Park and the prisoners put in work gangs and sent out after politicians. |

| My suggestion is to put a big fence around the ALS premises and the park across the road from it, where the crooks congregate to drink goon all day. |

Colin Barnett is a leadership dweeb that only ever became Premier because of the dismal failings of the W.A Labor party.
Regardless of political affiliations, the W.A Liberal party couldn't run a p!ss up in brewery let alone govern a state full of 2 million sheep! |

| Yeah but.... long term heavy cannabis use has been linked to schizophrenia. (Please don't draw any parallels with alcohol because I don't mind a drink myself, it's just the cannabis maybe we could do without.) |

| I think the W.A government should perhaps introduce Police compulsory 4skin checks at all of their boozebuses and T0ssers found to be in possession of short winkles should get either a $50 fine or free night with Bubbles Porter or Troy Sniffwell (depending upon sexual preference). |

OK - I take it that your point is that compulsory heavy long term cannabis use would lead to cannabis apathy. OK, and by then they might have schizophrenia. So legislation that would help to PREVENT long term cannabis use should operate to PREVENT both schizophrenia and apathy. So it's all agreed - you think cannabis use should be illegal. |

No! I think all drug usage should be legalised in order to remove the greater evil of organised crime that is supervised by state corruption.
Sure, some people will kill themselves but overall the alliance between corrupt government officials and organised crime officials can only bring even greater sorrow to far bigger number. |

How do you know this??? Is there a country comparable to Australia where drugs such as cannabis, heroin etc are legal to possess and where corruption is less and presumably deaths due to accidental overdoses are fewer? |

you are drawing comparisons here and research shows that there are a few people who are susceptable to getting mental problems such as schizophreia;which can be brought on by cannabis use.
Just the same as some people are likely to become addiceted to prescrition drugs which cause many problems or others who will easily become alchoholics with all the crime that causes.
Not too many people react violently toward others while using MJ but violence caused by alchohol is common.
Violence associated with MJ; is usually the result of mixing MJ with alchohol-as is driving under the influence of MJ;usually in combination, as well.
Those who take MJ are more likely to be mellowed out and only wish to relax.
The greatest problem comes when young people use it before thier brains are fully formed.
Decent legislation would restrict its use and make it illegal till person was of a mature age around 18 and more responsible as well-combined with education in the possible adverse effects of the drug. Also the case should be with alchohol-but unfortunately this is ssupposed to be a natural part of our Aussie culture.
The biggest problem ;is with the age of the person using these drugs
If one looks back to a time when it became more usual in Western culture to use MJ-it was in the 60s and that generation was more likely to be in their early 20s ,before they used it-and many of that genration still use it today; with no bad effects- on a recreational basis.
Like everything in life-moderation is the key.
To make it illegal-is to give control and huge profits back to the criminal gangs, drug lords and bikie gangs. And to make criminals of innocent people; whose only crime ;is a relaxing toke of a substance that has been used for centuries ,in Eastern countries ... |

and heavy long term use of alchohol ;leads to alchoholism, violence, crime, drunk driving causing death or severe disability-usually in others;wife beating chiorosis of the liver, cancer of numerous body parts;low birth rate and foetal alchohol syndrome babies/children ;weight gain-with all the health problems that causes ;severe vomiting and headaches ;debility at work......
and huge profits to multinational corporations and governments and huge drains on national health and police rescources.
But hey-its legal!!
(Now let me qualify-as in the original post --"long term heavy 'alchohol' use"!!!!!)
As is tobacco-greatest govt revenue raiser; till its swallowed up in the future health budget.
Neither of these have any medicinal benefits-while MJ has many proven benefits-apart from being a relaxant, in the majority of those who use it. |

Hi M.Tivey - the original post and response went:
POST:Sure, some people will kill themselves but overall the alliance between corrupt government officials and organised crime officials can only bring even greater sorrow to far bigger number.
RESPONSE: How do you know this??? Is there a country comparable to Australia where drugs such as cannabis, heroin etc are legal to possess and where corruption is less and presumably deaths due to accidental overdoses are fewer
So I didn't mean to imply overdose deaths were from cannabis, I was thinking of deaths from overdoses of heroin, speed etc. I was hoping someone would respond to my question about a comparable "other country", but so far no one has. |

freogrl - now, where do you want me to start? historicaly or present?
there are several countries which treat addiction as a medical problem (which it is) not as a criminal problem (which it is not unles proffitable...).
present first: netherlands have very lax laws pertaining to all drugs, they have such small crime rate that actually they close they prisons! not building new ones!
portugal - immediatelly after relaxation of us forced drug laws, crime ratio dropped by 60%...
switzerland - similar to portugal and dutch...
population - all these have similiar to oz, oz have much greater police present, nearly double that of any of these 3, oz have much stringer penalty code compared to these 3, have much greater prison population to these 3! oz have 117 persons per 100k, neherlands have about 110, portugal is ranked as one of the safest places in the world! and swiss just below 100 (usa over 170).
after dark nearly 40% of ozzies will not go outside... but only 15% of dutch or swiss and 5% of portugues!
statistics taken from 8th un crime survey (2006/20007) and cia 2008 yearbook. |
