hi rygar :-)
"That place is an institution!"
yes...there's always a mass of people gathered around the fire...its very unique...the old guildford pub across the road is also a nice place...
i think the last place which was similar, but sadly closed down a few years ago was bernies...just off mounts bay road... |

Bernies I think made way for an apartment complex and EATS in Cottesloe was the other...both did roaring trades but were on prime real estate.
Both are sadly missed although good to see Alfreds keeping the tradition alive!
Another great venue for those living in South Eastern suburbs is Lakers Tavern in Thornlie. The exec chef there is a seasoned industry veteran specialising in both intimate dinners for 2 to the largest of birthday/anniversary/wedd ing buffets. This place will not disappoint.
Likewise I'm sure we all remember that atrocious little show called My Restaurant Rules??? With Chris (Series 1) at Frasers and Shane (Series 2) at Mullaloo Tavern, need I say more??? Love him or hate him, Shane also has won "Chef of Year" 3 years in a row...so if that aint a good recommendation, I dont know what is!
Cheers :) |

its not a restaurant...but a very quaint little shop up in the hills...a place called sticky fingers...a very old fashion "english style sweet shoppe"...its in mundaring tucked away just off great eastern highway...nice coffee shop next door...
for anyone wanting a nice drive on a sunday...the spring time is the nicest time of the year to cruise up to the hills :-)
fremantle and hillarys are great but always so busy and parking is a nightmare...the hills are a much more peaceful option :-) |

Ok...did the buffet at Hyatt Cafe last night for dinner.
Great array of fresh seafood on the buffet including smoked salmon, crabs, prawns, mussels, and oysters.
Salads are fresh and crisp, char-grilled veg are tasty, cold meats are lovely, and lots of varieties of breads.
Desserts are wonderful with the usual impressive display...although the dessert chef out front making crepes on request isnt there anymore.
Hot carvery was a little disappointing (poorly presented and carved) although veggies, pasta and soups looked nice. Other wet dishes were OK although the octopus dish was a definate mistake (occy is fantastic but on a buffet, the ongoing heat turns it rubbery and any half decent chef should have realised this!)
The seafood, and desserts (esp having the dessert chef out front) are what really made this a wonderful buffet style dining experience...it certainly used to be way beyond anything available at Sizzler!
It still provides a pretty good meal overall, and the service is OK...but substantial price increases over the last couple of years have made this specific venue much less attractive for me as an option for a night out.
Cost for the buffet is $45/pax and can be combined with 2 hour drinks package (BWS) for additional $22/pax. So a complete dinner with drinks for 2 people comes in at just under $140.
Just my opinion.
Cheers :) |

Kailis Bros in Fremantle probably serve the freshest fish and chips out there (amongst other seafood) and I normally despise 'fish and chips'. - jaykaye
people might be interested to know that Cicerello's was established in Freo long before Kailis...neither are as good as they once were back when you ordered your fish and chips by pointing at a fish in their tanks saying "I'll have that one!"
Dont remember who the winner was but I do recall 2nd and 3rd place for best fish n chips this year was won by 'Swish n Chips' in Walcott St Mt Lawley and 'Sweetlips' in Oxford St Leederville. I've tried both of these places which consistently impressive results every time! |

Yeah, I tried Cicerello's a couple months back, the previous time was many years ago. It doesn't rank close to Kailis in my opinion.
I've heard good things about Swish n Chips also.
Oh, for a good Kebab, can't go past Peters by the Sea. Plus, the removal of the road in front of that area and the closure of the "Lookout" really gets rid of some of the "scum", so it makes for a better crowd (if you get my drift) |

FORGET the trendy spots in Perth - for the best coffee and eating experience, head to Northam.
Cafe Yasou and the RiversEdge Cafe have put the small Wheatbelt town on the culinary map following their triumphs in the Gold Plate Awards this week.
Cafe Yasou won the best coffee shop category, while RiversEdge took out the unlicensed cafe section.
RiversEdge is managed by Roger Searl and Willy Regan, who took it over just three months ago.
Mr Searl said it was an "incredible" double achievement for the town and proved quality wasn't limited to the city.
Cafe Yasou, a Cypriot and Greek-styled cosmopolitan outlet, is owned by Len and Anne Ryan.
Mr Ryan said consistency of quality was the key, while a special blend of coffee was also popular.
The menu features a selection of modern light meals, including thai chicken bites, and roasted capsicum and sweetcorn frittata, as well as Cypriot dishes. |

Hi Mark,
Yeah they do a pretty reasonable burger there at Fast Eddy's (think there are still 2 going - Perth CBD and Freo). I've only ever been in the take away side and never done the restaurant side. The 24hr takeaway side can attract some rather unpleasant patrons particularly in small hours of the morning which is when I'm guessing your incident will have occurred. Overall though, they do a pretty good burger there.
IMO, best burgers in Perth are still at Alfreds Kitchen in Guilford.
Try it, if you ever find yourself back over this way...definately wont regret it!
Hope all is well in Japan mate.
Cheers :) |

Good thread Rygar!
Im not very adventurous when I eat out, so its good to get some ideas on what else is out there!
Does anyone else know any GOOD seafood restaraunts? lol, I usually just cook seafood at home cauz the places Ive tried arent worth the extra $$$.
For me, best fried fish n chips are at Cicerellos in Freo. The Boat at Mindarie is also good... (but you have to be quick to get a seat!)
Best smorgesboard was at the Atrium in Burswood. Its expensive, but compared to Jetty's, theres a heaaaps more on offer and better quality.
Best Pizza- Santa Lucias in Heathridge. They dont skimp on topping!
Best Chinese- Ocean Dragon on West Coast Hwy, great food and killer views over the ocean.
Pub Grub- The Boat, Mindarie. Good food, cold beer, live bands and situated right on the water. Carine Tavern is also good.
Best steak- Hogsbreath, Joondalup. Im yet to find better!
Burgers- none worth mentioning..... might have to pop into Alfreds Kitchen and give it a go!!!
Indian- Theres a little Indian Restaraunt on Constellation Drive in Ocean Reef which is popular with the locals. Masala Indian Restaraunt in Clarkson is also good and offers authentic Indian food and Indian desserts. |

One of my faves is Joes Fish Shack in Fremantle. I always order the salt and pepper squid. It comes with this great sauce, mind you I wouldnt trust my opinion as I have usually downed a bottle of wine before the meals arrive and I am completely plastered.
No honestly I have always enjoyed their food including their coffee. Service has always been fantastic and it overlooks Fremantle Harbour. The decor is set up as fish shack too.
Theres no need to book, just turn up and they will seat you. Have at times walked straight in, but if required to wait has always been a short amount of time. |

Gargano's cnr Stirling Hway and Loch St Claremont is great Italian food and Mario the owner/chef is a character.
Try the osso bucco, the vodka penne, and the pizzas are light and crispy and very tasty.
Top it all off with the southern Italian Limoncello liquer and e! you could be in Italia!
Da Bruno Italian restaurant in Inglewood also gets rave review from just about everyone who goes there.
The best Chinese restaurant around for mine is Jade Court in Stirling Hway Cottesloe - a bit exxy like Gargano's but worth it for the salt and pepper squid, salt and pepper prawns, honey chicken, prawn toast and lots more. Yummy!
And Divido cafe in Scarborough beach Rd Mt Hawthorn (near the Paddo) might even have better pizzas than Gargano's. The youngish owner has come back from cheffing in England and all his food is bloody brilliant.
A pity about southwest restaurants around Dunsborough though - many like Assissi and Bay Cottage aren't what they used to be. Other restaurants are having trouble paying exorbitant chef salaries because of the talent drain up north to the mining boom.
The result can be ordinary food at high prices, with (frustratingly) no alternatives.
It seems the best way these days is the nice lunches at wineries like Wise's, with a choice "vacuum" at night.
It's a pity that down-south trades are also charging a fortune these days for ordinary work. Some of the rip-off culprits with attitude seem to be drop-outs from Perth, or people with the "let's rip off the Perth people" attitude.
Any suggestions on what we can do about making the Dunsborough area a pleasant experience again? |

Have to be honest, the quality of food in Perth restaurants is poor to say the least, while service is none existent.
The service industries is one area where Perth is close to being a Third World Nation. |
