| My wife and I worked in Shay Gap in 1988 - we both loved the place and were saddened to learn it has gone. We met some great people there including Mick Ireleand (Fitter welder in mine maintainence crew), Paul Guyford (Haulpak Driver), Gus and Lisa ? (Fitter in mine maintainence) Dacron and his wife Sandra and son Josh - Duey our T/A in the pit maintainence crew and many others - we do intend to go back and visit one day and I still have family in Perth. If anyone remebers us and wants to get in touch would love to hear from you - Tim and Simone Brown (nee O'Connor) tim@thebrowns.co.nz - and Trevor Bottrell was a hell of a good bloke as he hired me! |

| I used to go and stay with Uncle Ken and Auntie Cheryl at Goldsworthy, they not really related but thats what us kids used to call them. Me and their son Ben were similar age and we used to ride around town. Did a few Black Rocks with the Baler Bullets, the rivalry was great between us and the flying fleas. |

If you have google earth, type in yarrie and scholl a little to the north and you will see the old Goldsworthy townsite, you can still make out the streets and the oval.
The pit is getting fairly full of water and if you scroll towards Shay gap I could not find the townsite but you can see the current workings of BHP at nimingarra and yarrie further out, just follow the railroad. I also found a pic of Ken Styles dressed as Auntie Jack for a Black Rock race, great memories. |

SHAY GAP
Latitude 20° 31' S Longitude 120° 08' E
Shay Gap is an iron ore mining town in the Pilbara region, 1574 km north north east of Perth and 188 km east of Port Hedland. It is a company town, developed by Goldsworthy Mining Limited in the 1960's for the mining of iron ore from nearby deposits, and was gazetted in 1972. Shay Gap derives its name from a pass of the same name in the nearby hills. The name has been shown on maps since 1957, and it is believed named after a pearler named Robert Shea who, along with his companion Samuel Miller, was murdered by Aboriginals on the De Grey River in 1873.

Our eldest, a tear away tomboy girl called Kristy is 27 and a scary scientist girl.

Great memories of my time as a haulpak driver in Shay Gap from 1989-1992. Was part of the winning team in the Black Rock Stakes. Went to the reunion back in 2004 before leaving Australia to live in the USA. Check out this site I found today:

I am glad that I experienced life in the Pilbara when I did, and especially glad to have been part of the Shay Gap community. |

| Hell yea, we do remember Goldsworthy with great affection, 1971 to 1975, Loco shop/power station, boilermaker. Wife in mine planning office, shared office with Railway clerk. Black rock stakes winning team member in 1973. Tigers football club player on the wing, 2 or 3 premierships. remember the red dust, bucks parties at the water bores, & dumped on the dance floor at the club naked with a band from Perth. Great fishing trips to the coast, great fellowship. Lived in 2 story units in Strelley drive. Kaye & John |

Dear Felony
I was working for ICI in 1972. I remember going to Shay Gap from Goldsworthy with my workmates. I was 19 then.I took some photos but I have to find them. The town wasnt built yet; it was just a few relocatables. We were involved with blasting. Some of the guys I worked with were Kevin Danks, who is now a councillor at Marble Bar, Norbet Mazuchelli, Brian Morgan and Don Campbell. When I find them I will scan them then email them to you.

| I worked in Goldworthy in 1972 for ICI. Our team entered and won the Black Rock Stakes that year. I remember the bbq at the end. Goldsworhty was a great town. We worked hard and it was hot but we had great mateship. I think the hard conditions bonded us. I was only 19 but I grew up there. I remember the Saturday nights at the club and the open air cinema. I was banned from the wet canteen because I got in a fight. ICI was a hard company to work for. I will never forget the friends I made. You were respected if you worked hard, even if you wern't paid much. |

Well, my partner tore her calf muscle an hour and a half into the race, became a team motivator and then hobbled through the last 10 km or so. Even still, her team the Flying F-oresome managed to make second best time overall. Apparently a great public turnout with GWN coverage.
