| Hi, I worked in Shay Gap from 1987 to 1991. I stay in touch with a number of Shay Gappians, including Sam and Jean Dundovic. One of their daughters lives just up the road from me in Queensland. Sam and Jean now reside in Adelaide. They may be joining me at the Rockingham yaught club for the next Shay Gap reunion in April 2008. It is held every two years. If you need to know more, call me on 0412710933. |

Hi
I vaguely remember you too. I've just sent your dad an email so hopefully he will get it. What have you been up to? Are you still living in the West ? |

| only spent a short spell in Goldsworthy, but remember the Aboriginies coming out of the bush to watch the outdoor pictures. Do you remember the amazing beach through Mardi Station with millions of hermit crabs?? or the fresh water spring on the edge of the desert ( that area became Shay Gap I think) Good folks up there |

hi all
Im sure my Dad and Mum would love to attend the Shay Gap reunion, we lived there for years. Ahmed and Rokaya Eldesouki are my parents. My dad worked at the mines with the big trucks.....I can't really remember many people as I was little when we left. But my parents started at Shay Gap I think 1972/73 and we left (4 kids later) in the early 1980's. I remember Anna and Gus, Veronica and her children...a few others...anyway, I will have to tell my parents about this site. they will be thrilled!! Can more details about the reunion be passed on please! thanks.

Hi Ahmed
I certainly remember you
Interesting though when I saw the name Eldesouki on the last posting I knew I have heard it before. However when I saw the name Ahmed everything clicked. I am at present creating a list of people I knew, and finding losts of interesting things about Shay Gap that no one can find, unless they are patient (internet). I was Ray Tapatu on the 60 R Drills on A Shift. |

| I sure do my step father worked for Goldsworthy minning at Finicane Island. From time to time we would go camping at DeGrey river which always meant going to Goldsworthy for surplies. I remember the open air movies (which were free). The Black Rock Stakes (wheel barrow race from Goldsworthy to Point Cook in Port Hedland). The race was run at night, it seemed the whole town was out on the road following and cheering the runners all the way to Port Hedland. I also remember the Christmas parties held by the company, which brought the whole town together. Sadly all gone now. |

Hi guys-dont know if any of you have seen the adverts for the last Black Rock Stakes. No 38.
My hubby ran in the DSL team in 79-which was supposed to be the last one as I think that was when Goldsworthy closed down.
But I think they then ressurected it and ran if from Hedland to Whim Creek-I stand to be corrected; as left the Pilbara 20 years ago!
I figure if this is the case-the reason for ceasing it is probably the amount of heavy haulage on the highway making it too dangerous but would be interested if anyone knows differently ,
The ads show the chap who was the orioginal instigator and the Flying Fleas.
They both must be aged by now-the guy who started it and the young school kids.
The DSL team came third that year!!
B-I-L was over recently and was reminiscing about building the roads and bridges up that way-the Turner and Yule etc and the road to Goldsworthy etc.
All they wore in those days was boots socks and shorts and thier leather tool bags-times have changed!! |

| wow...that was interesting reading! Noone knows or remembers me...but in the early 60's and right up until his death in june 1965 (in Roebourne on his way to Goldsworthy)my father was an engineer. One of his last jobs was to oversee the building of "Goldsworthy". Many years later in 1987 my (then) husband and i moved to Port Hedland..where he is still a train controller. While i was still living in Hedland i had a friend who worked at Pardoo Roadhouse...on one of my visits to see her we went over to Goldsworthy and i was the second last person to sign the "Visitors" book at the Goldsworthy store. Now i live just up the road from the "Baysie"...small world. |

| Is there anybody from the Black Rock Stakes who has a less hazy memory than me. I was part of the Hamersley team. Know we had a drink in the Sports Club or Mess before the night start. Not sure if the race was along the main road or Track Access road. Not sure what place we came in at, can't find any details of the races from the early days. All I remember is a great breakfast when we finished but not sure if the finish was at Finucane Island or in Port Hedland. At the time it was just for a laugh & time moved on but now I'd like all the details, what other teams ran, what order they came in etc. Guess only some of the organisers would know & they're probably starting another race up in the sky |

| Guess the year was 1975 or possibly 1974 sometime around Cyclone Trixie. Leo K was in the team I think. The official Black Rock Stakes site seems to only have stuff for the last 20 years. I guess anything before that is lost to the mists of time and very hazy memories. |

interesting-we left the pilbara 20 years ago and black rock stakes were going well before that-as i said my hubby ran in the Salt Shakers team-in what was supposed to be the last race.
Then they decided to change it and I think the race ran rom Hedland to Whim Creek and maybe thats why it has been suspended; with all the traffic now!
Or maybe its because the hotel is now privately owned for a mining company accomadation.
Dont know-havent had contact up there for a long time.
Add on the tele ;shows the founder and some of the Flying fleas teams; I think.
Hope someone can help-we didnt get to the Pilbara till 76.
DID soemeone mention a Goldsworth website earlier on here-maybe you can get some info there-or was it shay gap?? |

| My Guess is that when the Black Rock Stakes started nobody thought it would be a regular event for the next X decades. Also with the itinerant nature of the workforce any records that may have been - were probably not passed on. Only later once it got established did someone start keeping a record for posterity, but what had gone on before was scattered all over Australia and so no longer available. When I was destroying can after can banging it against the window to wake up the next runner I had no idea I'd be searching the Internet 30 years later looking for how well we did and who won. We certainly didn't. |

| What do others think about the nonsense of returning towns like Goldsworthy & Shay Gap back to the bush from whence they sprung. I know the WA government promised this before allowing them to be built but West Australia has so much bush was it really necessary. After all people worked in those towns, grew up in those towns, went to school in those towns, made friends and built up memories. Now years later they would like to go back to refresh those memories but cannot. School kids in the top schools in Perth can go back to their hallowed halls after they retire for annual reunions but what have the my-town-and-school-are-no -longer-there old-timers got for their reunion. Still I guess even much of Perth has changed. Used to stay at the Forest House hotel when flying down from the North for Rest & relaxation. Went back after many years to find that there is a massive tower of steel and glass where my memories should have been. |

with vandalism the way it is today-none of these towns would have remained ;as old ghost towns once did-they would have either been stolen-like many of the outback bridges are-or just totally wrecked for the 'fun' of it; as so many things are these days.
Better the memory remains and people get together-than to have a destroyed derelict place; scattering rubbish over the country side. |

Howdy all !
The last Black Rock Stakes will be held on Saturday, 28th June and it has been determined that the start line will be held at Goldsworthy (well as close as we can get to it). We did this in 2005 (i.e the committee) and it was excellent and we feel it is appropriate to start it there in this, its final year. We have had a lot of interest from many across the state who used to live up this way, wanting to come back and if anyone has any queries, or interesting photos/stories to tell about the BRS, or simply want some more information on this years event, please contact me on sonjagobel@westnet.com.au ............
cheers

| Hi all, finally found something on the town of Shay Gap..Myself lived there for around 5 years up to 1988 then left. Used to call the mountain on the left as you head in "the knob" Used to climb it heaps when i was a kid. Golf course was great especially hole 11, #2 driver from the tea and it would bounce 600 mtrs lol. Used to go to marble bar for the annual race. Visited all the goerges around the pilbaras. Lots of memories, had lots of friends there too, spent some of the best years of my life there, cant locate a single soul so far. I do have photos of the town as you would see it today, taken a few years ago, all that is left is trees here and there and the track marks left behind as they rolled out. Could go on forever about the towns and lifestyle that was there at Shay Gap(outdoor cinema, the courts etc) BEST memory we used to go out back in the hills and played "BUNDJEE WARS" throwing hard dirt at each other great fun lol. Anyway I'm Rod Adams lived there with my mother Dianne and Trevor Botrell. So if you know me say hi. Catchas! |

| What a blast from the past! I lived in Goldsworthy from 1966 until 1972 after the death of my Father, Arnold Smits. Went to Primary school in Goldsworthy and then went on to High School in Port Hedland. Have met many people from Goldsworthy from time to time. |

Hi
I remember Trev from the maintenance crew days along with Frank Skelly, I used to enjoy it when the Yank (Bucyrus Erie Company/ Dresser) would come to Shay Gap and I would wait in the lounge of The Club with Frank et al for some goodies

| Hi All - I'm gutted to hear that the Black Rock Stakes is to come to an end - I ran in the Mendelle Follies (all girls team) in 1978 -- Still have the T shirt, although I don't fit into it any more -- have a selection of Shirts, from the Sand Dragons BRS team to Goldsowrthy Soccer and safety awards -- Stupid I know but I can't bring myself to part with them. Have been back in the UK since 1979, but have such great memories of working 'up North'. Will be coming to the Goldsworthy reunion next year arranged by Judy Nash, and will bring the piles of photos from my time in GW, including chilling out in the 'wet' and the Pram race we had to raise money for the Miss Australia Quest!! Also photos of people on this message board. I can't wait! |
