I have stumbled across this great 3 hear conversation! I was trying to explain to my husband where I grew up... I was in the Gap between '77 and '83...and can remember much of what it was like. Dad (Vic) worked as a Shovel Operator at Goldsworthy...great times...who remembers the cyclone?

Mickey Mouse Airlines was one thing, but the most terrfiying experience was thravelling to Goldsworthy and onto Shay Gap and vice versa in those dreaded Britten Norman Islanders. They would bounce around and drop suddenly in the sky. I personally would make sure I was tanked up with rum so thet those sensations would not affect me. It always worked. It was quite amusing to see others chundering in the sky so to speak.

I was employed as a geologist at Mt. Goldsworthy from July 65 to July 66 while it was being built (my first job). My memories are of lots of beer to wash the red dust down! I spent several days at Shay Gap producing the first geological map (did I get it wrong?). All fond but distant memories but I do have some photos (slides) if anyone is interested.

hello janflan01 - Here I am Stella Claveau (nee YLIAS) Hope you are well as it has been a long time and as usual time has passed by so quickly. It's hard to believe Goldsworthy was in the mid 70's. I was there when Elvis' death was announced on the Radio. A memorable time and day. Good Luck.

lived in South Hedland for 8 yrs from '77. Visited Goldsworthy and messed about playing bowls at Shay Gap, my lovely white cat came from Shay Gap ( it spent most of it's life a pink colour from dust). Used to go camping at Cape Kerauderon when there was nothing there but sand, water & fish. It was fun, we camped right on the beach, apparently it is all civilised up there now, wouldn't be the same. It was a great life.

Hi Stella -- great to hear from you --Long time I know, but I have the fondest memories of Goldsworthy, but especially the people there - You, Judy Nash, All the Dundovic's Jean Sam and the kids - PCTC etc.... Have some great photos of you and I Stella when we flew down to Perth to a Boxing match - Me, you and your sister and mum, having a picnic in a park (I can't remember the name of the park). Happy days. Judy Nash is coming to the UK in a couple of weeks and will be staying with me for a couple of days -- Can't wait to catch up -- will give her some photos of GW to bring back with her!!

Hi all, Ewan McAllister here and my wife AN. We were in Goldsworthy 1986-88 and loved it. Lived across from Fritzy in the beginning and school teacher John. I worked as a fitter on C-shift in the loco shed with Darryl as the foreman. Ran in the blackrock stakes and played mixed volleyball and hockey in Shay Gap. My wife worked at the Pardoo Roadhouse and the mess for a while. We also lived next to Sharon the loco driver. Boilermaker on shift was Joycey. Also worked with Warren and Tank, Dave Veeney Kevin Strugnell in stores (last seen at Komatsu Perth).

Wow this site is bring back so many great memories I arrived in Goldsworthy in 1966 and lived there for 11years Some of the people that have stayed in my memory are Mr and Mrs Lamb the school teachers ,Debbie Hanrahan,Angela Powell Trevor and Peter Jordan,Ian Lennard,Vince Beckman, Martin Peter Phillip Heath, they were at primary school. But when i started work ther people like Arni in the machine shop Charlie Wing in the tool store and who can forget Dennis Devaney in the Wet does any one remember the miserable lizard? I remember putting up a flying fox across Mulyie Pool I also recall Fat boy in his Galant,Peter Sloane in his ap5 Valiant and Alan Sinclair throwing there cars into the corner out side complex 11 Yee Haa I recall Peter sloane towing us around the mud flat behind his ap5 on a car bonnet.there so many stories i look foward to seeing everyone at the reunion

I must confess that i was never there, but I found this thread, and it got me interested.
It's like a potted history lesson, and a great read.
Sounds like a great place to live, grow up, and work.
Best wishes to all:-) |
