| Hey people, I doubt many people would have ever heard of the place, but near Port-Hedland (in the Pilbara) there used to be a mining town called Goldsworthy, it was shut down a while back now, but im curious if anybody remembers it or has any stories. |

Was such a pretty little town-went with hubby a number of times from Karratha when he played football there-also Shay Gap-gone now too.
Some of our memebers of the Kats flew but we drove- long drive for a two hr footy game!! |

Both Goldsworthy and Shay Gap were delightful hospitable fabuluous country towns.
Very much along the same lines as their more infamous counterpart in Wittenoom further down the road to the NW of Tom Price.
Wittenoom brings back fond memories of a beautiful town that I visited on several occasions as a child with nearby gorge and stunning rock pools on the Fortescue that are just awesome!
Shay Gap also brings back memories but mostly of cyclones...beautiful little town that was right in the corridor and forever being flattened and rebuilt.
The people of Goldsworthy always stuck in my mind. Never the most picturesque of towns, but some of the most truly marvellous people I have ever come across! |

| Hi I grew up in Goldsworthy & have the best memories from my childhood. My family arrived there when I was 2 years old & moved to Shay Gap during my high school years. As kids we spent many wekends camping at DeGrey River & Mulyie (hope I spelt that right!!?) Pool with heaps of other families from town. Everyone knew each other. Christmas was just open house day. Everyone did the rounds. The people were unreal. It was a great life as a kid! |

| Goldsworthy & Shay Gap, I was actually working near the old townsite a couple of week's ago(work on Railroad) that's where the spiritual home of the Blackrock stakes started from. When we were kid's we used to go out there from Hedland & play indoor cricket in the old domed hall's that all of Goldsworthy Mining town's had(Finucane Island & Shay Gap)also cricket. It was a good weekend away & the local's were accomodating. BHP Billiton bought out Goldsworthy Mining & killed Shay Gap, Goldworthy & Finucane Island Communities. They were the good day's. Open air cinema's for free.... not now the almighty dollar rules up here now |

Sure do, have fond memories of that place growing up, dad working in the mines, the red dust stain on the laundry (whites turning into pinks), the open cinema, the wonderful grub at the mess, the raucaus sporting club with some really colourful characters and the generous and fun spirited citizens. Not to mention, a reasonably skilled football team - Go you mighty Tigers!!!!
Sure had some fond memories, like all good things it had to end!!!!

"the wonderful grub at the mess"
Hey - unfortunately, I've never been to Goldsworthy, but it was certainly a going concern when I was in Dampier and Paraburdoo all those years back. And the food at the mess - I remember Sundays were the best. Roast pork, chicken, salad, cold meat and a smorgasbord, cheese platters, various deserts... Hmmm.. |

I remember Goldsworthy pretty well, we used to live on Muccan station, before moving to Shay Gap...The thing that struck me most about Goldsworthy was the sporting tradition it developed with Shay Gap... The Shay Gap Hawks with ex Hawthorn full back John McArthur ruling the roost those Hawks v Tigers games were something to watch, Ask the umpires about Corralie Sparks chasing them across the field with a start picket!
I was in the Shay Gap swimming club and our meets with Goldsworthy were legendary (well in my mind they were)
The town was built too close to the mine and so it was constantly full of mine dust... very very dusty place....anyone remember Peter Pike the bus driver? always had an uncanny knack of being able to tell you to the exact minute the Bus would pull into town and he would predict that the minute he left Hedland!!!
Lynn ???? cant remember his last name but he used to ride a Kawasaki 900 like a bat out of hades and would even race it on the motor cross track
Talk about making me homesick :( I've been living in Los Angeles for the past 16 years so it was great to see this posting...Merry Christmas |

| I remember Goldsworthy well we started grade 1 there and my brother was in the Black Rock Stakes (flying fleas) the DeGrey river was flowing and they had to run across the bridge which was the railway line then. We use to go camping at Cape Croydon and Condon with the Holdworths (who was the local copper then) and Piffkies. |

Yeah, I remember Goldsworthy. I worked there in 1975. In the stores warehouse. I remember a guy called mal seaman. Used to wear a headband to keep his long hair from falling on his face. While I was with him one day, he served at the counter a guy he hated, and on finding the spare part the guy had requested, bashed it on a wall and said to me: "I'll give him a *** **d one!''
The warehouse staff contributed to a book of verse, and one poem I remember was about a supervisor, Neville Dwyer. It began:
If you look closely at the track
That links the counter to the back
There you'll see a deep worn rut
Made by one who constantly struts
Albeit in a most peculiar way. |
