Fires threaten homes near Perth
Several fires continue to burn in Western Australia, including a strong blaze burning near the town of Dwellingup, 100 kilometres south of Perth.
The town has been closed, power has been cut and there are reports that up to five houses have been destroyed and more are threatened.
A number of residents have evacuated the area and the Murray RSL hall in Pinjarra has been opened for those needing shelter.
Elsewhere, fires have been burning to the north of Williams, near Bunbury, and fires continue to burn in Toodyay.
No homes are under threat.
Meanwhile, a fire in the Perth suburb of Forresdale has been brought under control.
About 230 hectares have been destroyed by the fire but it is believed no homes have been lost.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
What these criminals are causing this year is unforgivable-at the risk of sounding like our dear croc upstairs-if they catch one of them-I think they should take them out on the next water bomber and drop them, in the middle of it!!
Think of all the tragedy it would stop and the money it would save; as well as the forests and animals that are destroyed and lives of ordinary people and firies put at risk.
Now the death fo a woman and loss of peoples homes and the trauma that flows from that; are also attributable to them
And I wish the news broadcasts would stop referring to them as firebugs-they are ARSONISTS-one of the worst kind of criminals because thier intent is to cause as much destruction as possible and they don't care about the horrific consequences of thier actions.
Today beacuse of them-a family grieves for thier loved one-people grieve for the loss of thier lifes work and memories and forests that provide clean air and protection for us are lost and all the animals within them ;precious water expended to put fires out and lives of firies and others put at risk needlessly.I am appalled and horrified |

WA teacher dies fleeing bushfire
A young schoolteacher was burnt to death after she was reportedly thrown from her car while trying to escape a bushfire northeast of Perth.
The young teacher, known as "Michelle" to locals, was killed as she tried to flee a raging fire that engulfed the fringe of Toodyay, about 85 km northeast of Perth.
It is believed the car rolled as she drove away from the blaze, ABC News reported.
She was then thrown from her car and was burnt to death, police said.
A Toodyay resident, who did not wish to be named, said Michelle was believed to have tried to escape the fire, with her boyfriend travelling just ahead of her in his own car.
The resident said Michelle, who was in her mid 20s, taught her daughter in Toodyay Primary School's Grade 6 and 7 class.
"She was a lovely person and she was a pretty dedicated schoolteacher," the resident said.
"She taught my daughter and she was a wonderful person, who previously taught the pre-primary children and then the Grade Six and Seven class. It's sad (news) for everyone."
Liem Nguyen, of the Toodyay Roadhouse, said he knew Michelle, describing her as a great person.
"It's a very tragic thing to happen. It's a small community here and we never thought anything like this would happen," he said.
Two bushfires were out of control in the Toodyay area, jumping the Toodyay and Toomalling roads.
Firecrews were trying to contain their speed, a Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australian spokesman said.
Other fires have threatened Perth, with the Dwellingup community losing several homes, south-east of the city.
Forrestdale, a Perth hills suburb, was saved from out of control fires after 100 firefighters and water-bombing Helitac helicopters successfully contained the fires. |

Just a update of the fire in Dwellingup if anybody is interested.
There has been 6 fires destroyed by this fire, one of them was a guy that my Dad knows.
I live 20 kms from Dwellingup and have had helicopters flying over since yesterday.
There is going to be a public meeting in Dwellingup at 12.00pm today to discuss the problem.
I have heard that they have caught the person who started the fire so that is good news.
For the 6 families who have lost there home, we could all do them a favour and pack boxes of supplies that they may need. |

thanks so much diamond-actually I am in the country and live with that feeling all the summer-having had it really close one year.
Once it happens to you-you never feel safe again.
So I always feel for all those poor people and know the terror they feel.
We usually have some near by-so far not assclose as the other one-had one over the road at the start of the year but good firebreaks-a still day and quick action and it was out!
The most horrible part is ;that those terrorists start so many fires these days-we can all be watchful for the days we know they will happen on-lighting strikes-or in the country-with harvesting and machinery sparks.
Now there are so many started by these terrorists-that no piece of flammable bush seems safe and it has brought it home to so many people who would otherwise have been safe.
It seems all the recent ones this weekend have been deliberately lit and then so many have suffered from it-it is something that never leaves you-even if you escape it-the mental trauma is always there to some degree-how many there must be over the east, after thier long spell of weeks and so many children as well.
And somehow-to lose everything you own, to someone elses deliberate act-makes it so much worse.
These creatures are the worst kind and no excuse for a sickness-murderers are also sick-normal people dont murder- but we dont excuse them;niether should we excuse someone who has obiously planned and targetted an area and waited for a day when it will do the most harm in the shortest time. |

Look at the latest for WA.
Fourteen houses lost in WA bushfire
A bushfire raging in jarrah forest and farmland south-east of Perth has now razed 14 houses and has damaged three others, fire authorities say.
The fire, which police suspect was deliberately lit on Saturday, has left the old forestry town of Dwellingup, 70km south-east of Perth, with limited water supplies, while power and telecommunication services were cut when fire destroyed numerous power poles.
The town was relying on mobile generators for emergency power, Western Power says.
Fourteen houses and numerous farm sheds outside Dwellingup had been destroyed, and three other houses were damaged by the fire, which has burned more than 4,000 hectares of land, Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) spokeswoman Caris Bailey said.

This is unbelieveable -poor people-someone has to pay |

Major WA bushfire fans out of control
A major bushfire burning near the town of Dwellingup, 100 kilometres south of Perth, is fanning out of control.
Strong easterly winds have flared up a fire that has been burning just six kilometres outside Dwellingup.
Fourteen homes have already been destroyed and many people have had to evacuate their homes.
Department of Environment and Conservation fire services manager Rick Sneeuwjagt says this recent outbreak is causing concern for fire crews as part of the blaze heads towards homes.
"Fire authorities are trying to ensure that all communities and individual owners are alerted and make their plans," he said.
"Because of the very difficulty of both the weather and the conditions, it's hard to know exactly where the fire front is.
"There are a lot of houses that could be threatened tonight."
Meanwhile, conditions are slowly improving in the Perth southern suburb of Forrestdale, where a fire that burned 350 hectares has been threatening homes this afternoon.
No properties have been destroyed and some roads in the area are being reopened. |

Initial reports that six houses had been lost and 5,000 hectares had been burned were revised on new information, Ms Bailey said.
No homes were directly under threat on Sunday night but the fire was burning about four kilometres from private property, she said.
"There's been an escape from one of the flanks of the fire which is looking a bit serious," Ms Bailey said.
"The fire had been pushing to the south-west of Dwellingup. It jumped over the Murray River and it was in some very rugged terrain.
"We have been attempting to put a containment line in.
"Easterly winds have fanned it back towards the north-west, so it is not heading towards Dwellingup or any other town but there is some private property about 4km away."
The affected properties are in the Murray Hills subdivision.
About 250 firefighters were battling to control the flames on Sunday night, Ms Bailey said.
Some of the 100 residents who left Dwellingup on Saturday to shelter at nearby Pinjarrah and Fairbridge had returned to the town, she said.
WA Police spokesman Inspector Trevor Davis said the arson squad was investigating whether the fire was deliberately lit.
"Attending police at the fires believe some of them have been suspicious as to their cause, particularly with the loss of property," Insp Davis said.
A spokesman for electricity provider Western Power said Dwellingup residents were relying on generators for emergency power after the fire damaged the main powerline into town and destroyed about 100 power poles.
Fires at North Yunderup, Greenfields and Parkland had also affected three transmission lines and cut power to another 56,000 properties.
The fires are preventing Western Power crews reaching the transmission lines to assess the damage and begin repairs.
Police are also investigating the death of a school teacher in her mid 20s who was killed on Saturday when her car rolled as she fled a fire near Toodyay, about 85km north-east of Perth........... |

I can only hope for all of you that its out soon-especailly with stong winds forcast tomorro and then hot days Tues and Wed.
My thoughts on these creatures do not bear thinking of=they are the lowest of the low!
Good luck Nathan-hope you remain safe and all of yours-I am thinking of all those near fires tonite-I know how frightening they are |

hi lil lady-I do hope they are ok-I just wish everyone had been-I hope Coolup is ok-the winds we have now are scarey up here so dont know what they are like there and nite time is such a bad time too-I hope they are all safe-so much horror from horrible acts of people, who are criminal-so many people suffer.
My other belief is-if arsonists are caught-they should be put in front of the next fire front with the tools the old bushies had to put the fires out and let them get out of it;see how much they enjoy it up close and personal. One wet burlap sack and let them beat thier way out-if they can!!!
Sadly with power out-it also means a lot of bush people, cant defend thier properties. We have that problem here.It can get very frightening then!
A house was lost at Bullsbrook because of lightening putting the power out and he had to watch it burn ;as had no water pressure.
Hope your BF and all the firies stay safe. |

i hope each and everyone of you are keeping safe...
such terrible news to wake up and read more homes have been lost...
and whilst they are cool and refreshing the winds up this way "the easterlies" were very strong overnight and still so today...its a worry...having lived in the bush environment for over 20 years it concerns me that a fire could very quickly ignite and rage through...these winds also mean we are heading for extremely hot conditions...
i think most of us have experienced a "close call"...i had intended to go out yesterday...but because of the nearness of the smoke decided to stay around home....
the vollies are amazing men and women who work so hard to keep us all so safe... |

WA declares bushfire emergency
The Western Australian Government has declared a bushfire emergency period as firefighters are kept busy with several blazes across the state.
Crews are still working to control a large fire in Dwellingup that has destroyed about 16 homes and burnt through more than 11,000 hectares.
The fire has been contained but crews are still working to control one flank of the blaze.
Firefighters are mopping up after blazes in the John Forrest National Park, Mundaring, Yanchep, Forrestdale and High Wycombe.
Police suspect arsonists may be responsible for some of the fires.
Emergency Services Minister John Kobelke says the bushfire emergency period makes it illegal to light any fires in the open air.
"Anyone breaching this is liable for 12 months' jail and up to $20,000 in penalties," he said.
"The declaration of a bushfire emergency period also means that there will be clear coordination through the chief operational officer at FESA [Fire and Emergency Services Authority]." |

I have a winery in Toodyay, and I have seen for myself the short cuts WP takes. Remember the glass bottle being used as a conductor, thats just the start. I thinks its time for WP to look at all equipment in country areas as there are some serious things that need to be fixed.
For those of you in Coolup, Dwellingup, and other towns affected. I hope you all pull through this |

the glass bottels are really old methods but I would think quite effective replacements but I do agree something serious needs to be done.
Like many in the country;we rely on the powert to pump water to our home-like the guy in Bullsbrook. We do also have a water tanker ute but thats only a stop gap-unlike a huge tank of water beside the house !But no electricity-no water .
20 years ago-you could have a fire 100 feet away from the house and no loss of power-now you get a storm in a 50k radius and the power goes out in a 100 k radius ;all at once.
Seems ;instead of stopping at a cut out switch on a pole-they just all trip down the line!
Scarey, sitting here in teh dark with a deep redglow on the horizon and stong wind in your direction-luckily not this year-feel so ,for those down south.
Worst ;when out of 220 fires on the weekend-they think most were deliberately lit!
Fories risking lives and getting tired , when they should only be out when really needed.
Arsonists are the worst terrorists-they are doing it to thier own people and like the psychologist ,who interviewed a number of them said-they know what they are doing ;they know what the effects can be and they dont care!
All those people suffering and they get no recompense.
Sad when things so bad, as losing that lovely young teacher happened;will effect so many people -not just her poor family.
Fire is so cruel and like someone said to me-fire is no ones friend! You cant hope it will keep away from you.
I think with the pictures lately-people who have never thought of it-see how rapid and all consuming and frightening it can be ;if the conditons are right-dry atmosphere ,strong winds and boiling hot days!
Frightening combinations.
Heres hoping tomorro doesnt eventuate and the arsonists are quickly under lock and key-throw away the key too! |

just thought I would reprise this thread ;as its very much that time now-can only say how grateful I am for the cooler weather.
A break from the stress of worrying about fires-especially during harvest;which are more unexpected, than ones you watch for on days with thunderstorms and lightening strikes.
With the horrors of the Fires in the US and forcasts of worsening conditions world wide, because of global warming we end up with a conundrum.
You burn forests-or they burn naturally;adding to the carbon dioxide load in the atmosphere, which contributes to climate change-;which leads to worsening conditions for fires!
Its a catch 22 situation-damned if you do and damned if you dont-like a dog chasing its tail.
maybe we are already past the tipping point ;as far as getting on top if the situation is concerned.
As it stands all the scientific forcasts are that it is not going to get any better anyway.
It is about time the govt took action to at least make people safer ,by having the resources available to fight fires as soon as they start ;instead of whittling away at them; and then if the conditions worsen unexpectedly-they get out of control;like the Canberra ones.Had these been doused when they first started, that would have ended it .
More first strike planes and a couple of Hueys in every state .
The amount of damage prevented by early action ,would well and truly pay for them in the long run;let alone the personal loss and grief it would save.
We can spend billions on killing machines-which may never be used-why cant we spend a few billion on actually saving people and property-which will definitely end up being used.
And its also about time the govt upped the reward for fire spotters and publicised far more widely ;so people are on the loookout for a r sonists-which may prevent a few of them actually starting the fires ;or catch them before they can continue on their sick and dangerous spree.
The old saying-prevention is better than cure |

in many countries arsonists are regarded much lower than rapists or murderers and apply to them lenghty sentence or even death penalty, if they are considered pyromaniacs - then usually they are locked up in institutions - sometime for very long time... in case of repetitive offender - especially if someone lost life as result of fire - for life in greylands or similar...
review of the case every 3 to 5 years.... |

There has already been 30 odd fires in the southwest of WA already this spring/summer that were not prescribed burns ... wait to the warm weather really starts ... these little fires are going to require mroe than a few trucks to put them out.
Ever heard the rumour that some people start fires for money. Be it people on the fire (they can make a tidy wage from working a week on a fire), people who own accomodation places (you suddenly have 'no vacany' for a week or two), or people who own food places (think how many meals are used by 100 odd people everyday for a week or two). I have heard rumours about people doing this but don't know if any is actually documented. |

see on the news tonite there was a 21 yr old who was charged with lighting fires in the hills in 2002-he was a volunteer firefighter at the time.-bet his ex mates are spewing-knowing they had to needlessly risk their lives putting out fires that had been deliberately lit by one of their own.
Apparently he admitted to lighting a number of them at the time he was caught but now only admits to three and said he had lit them because he had been accused of lighting the other ones-so this was to prove he hadn't lit the other ones.
Somewhere there is a sick logic and I guess it will come out in his trial! |
