| Just a quiet one,and a point people are missing,is that the CBD is exactly that.It is a working business district. It is not a place for nightclubs, disco's etc.It is a working area.We have Northbridge for nightlife.I won't say anything about the ferris wheel,I 'm still laughing my guts out.For those who want to re-design the foreshore, stop and think, who are the ones going to profit at this. Also re-designing the foreshore will also mean re-designing Langley Park.Langley Park is an emergency airstrip.Consider that in your planning.Or lack of.Trendsetters,go for it. |

CBD stopped meaning 'Central Business District' a long while ago, besides which, if you want to get technical, population growth (a direct result of increased inner city living and vibrancy) is a major factor in 'business'.
In case you haven't noticed, Northbidge is on the verge of being connected to the city (though Barnett looks likely to jerk that off as well). There is no reason the two shouldn't be seamlessly connected. Also, why is it so absurd for a capital city to have more than one centre for social activity?
Seriously, some people should just sod off to the country and stay there.
Bunbury could always do with more 'nothing' people. |

One thing all my mates love about london was being able to buy pretty much everything at the supermarket,
Problem with that here tho is its effect on small business. |

Over regulation of the retail industry won't stop that from happening.
Deregulated trading, for example, has little (if any) negative impact on small business. |

I know. He wants to "scale down" the Northbridge link development i.e. create a 'family friendly' space with green, open space. The idiot must be clueless on account of their being the foreshore, the Supreme Court Gardens and the tiny 'open space' otherwise known as Kings Park.
It would be fantastic if Scaffidi was running this city (with greater power). She's the only one with a clue. |

Whatever Barnett decides for the Perth Swan River foreshore, the prime outcome should be that, before the project commences, the area belongs to the common people, and when the project is finished it should still be so.
The foreshore should not be turned into an elitist enclave. It should not incorporate apartments for the rich and famous, nor a playground strictly for the late set.
What belongs to the people should remain in trust for the use of everyday people well into the future.
Whatever takes place on the foreshore should keep this in mind at all times. |

Who do we think is enjoying the foreshore now? Any properties remotely close to the river are already worth a fortune. At least by developing the area, and building a mix of retail, dining, entertainment and living on and around the foreshore, we create an environment that can be enjoyed by EVERYONE.
As it is, I don't see too many people - ever - on the foreshore anyway. |

That's fine as long as it remains totally freely accessable by all. My main gripe with Carpenters concept was turning over large tracts of prime public space over to multi million dollar apartments for the rich and famous. And, low rise will suit the area much more than high rise.
Retail, cafe's, restaurants, entertainment are fine, as long as nothing alienates the area from normal people.
We need a friendly development, and there should't need to be a sell out to private enterprise. Whatever is developed should remain in government hands and leased to private providers. |

Look at Melbourne's Southbank. Enough said.
Property near the city and river is always going to be expensive. The key is to develop enough as to provide more realistic prices (keep in mind, Perth has a warped concept of 'high rise'). Keep the lower levels accessible and use them as retail, dining and entertainment.
Riverfront development has been done for hundreds of years, so why can't we begin to even formulate something useful. |
