Barnett and city projects Reply to this message
Given the recent comments (plans) proposed by Barnett regarding the postponement (or scrapping) of projects within the city...I was curious as to what people's thoughts were.

Personally, I think Barnett is going some way to killing off any chance Perth has of improving the quality of inner-city life, vibrancy etc.

I think Barnett is being very short sighted, and as a result, the city will pay in the coming years.

...and yes, this probably is a "are you Perth is dullsville" in disguise. I just thought, as it is an actual news topic, we might discuss it again *cough*.

It's probably not a bad idea to kill off some of labor's ill-conceived projects. This will enable the creation of more sensible perth-friendly projects to be put in their place (hopefully). We want to build on what Perth already has, not destroy and replace it.

Out of curiosity, what projects?

...and what is a 'Perth-friendly' project?

Heh.

"WA Govt reconsiders Ledger Theatre

Western Australia's Premier Colin Barnett has confirmed the Government is considering scrapping plans to name a new theatre in Northbridge after the late Perth-born actor Heath Ledger.

Ledger died in a New York apartment in January aged 28.

In July, then premier Alan Carpenter stood beside the late actor's father, Kim, and announced the performing arts venue would be called the Heath Ledger Theatre.

But Mr Barnett says the local arts community is divided over the decision, and the Government is now considering alternatives.

"He was a young actor who had some great successes, and I have no doubt was headed for an outstanding career," he said. "But he lost his life at a very young age, so we never saw the true achievement that Heath Ledger may have made."

Mr Barnett says Ledger's memory will be commemorated at the theatre in someway, it just won't necessarily be named after him"

Barnett is going to be a lame a$$ premier because he needs to feed the National party. WA becomes the loser. We have already seen it in the reconsideration of the stadium and wanting to slash $25 mill from the Fuzz when theLiberals ran a "Tough on crime" platform. Barnett is an idoit.

Who will pay for all these projects, Labor made us think we could afford them.

That is NOT the case....

Trev it was not Barnett's idea to slash 25 mil from the police budget, it was that usless Ripper that hatched this plan. He wanted 3% shaved from their budget.

Ripper, the name really suits doesnt it.
If you want an idiot, Ripper is it.....

Ripper IS an idiot, no doubt.

...and these were projects the State could certainly afford waterbank. No doubt the budget might have been 'hurt', but the state could afford them.

Incidentally, look at what Brisbane has managed during their 'boom' period.

Re:Barnett and city projects Reply to this message
The figures were 'fudged' in regard to the project costs...especially the initial outlay.

The state however, could still afford the projects.

THE axe could fall on major projects to make up for a $700 million cost blowout in Labor's capital works program, Treasurer Troy Buswell says.

Mr Buswell said Treasury officials told him this morning there were major cost over-runs on several significant projects.

Since Labor released its pre-election financial statement just weeks ago, labour and other production costs had grown by $700 million, he said.

``These figures alarm me,'' Mr Buswell told journalists.

``I've asked them (Treasury) to go back and complete a very comprehensive audit of capital works in Western Australia, over the cost of $20 million.''

During the election campaign, Treasury officials reported that cost over-runs and upward revisions of the capital works program had added $260 million to the forward estimates.

But Mr Buswell says Labor knew the real increases were a lot more.

``My view is that some of them were known, some of them may have been known and some people may have chosen not to know,'' Mr Buswell said of former Labor government ministers.

``I've also asked Treasury and the Department of Housing and Works to provide me with some advice on how we can change the way we go about running the capital works program in Western Australia.

``Quite clearly, the current system is not working.''

Plans for the new sporting and entertainment venue Perth Arena, the Perth police complex, a prison in WA's north and hospital upgrades would be put on hold until the Treasury review was finished, Mr Buswell said.

Liberals' flip-flop on stadium: click here

He rejected suggestions the Liberals had been caught out by the National Party's Royalties for Regions scheme demands, and now realised it couldn't afford its election promises.

``I only found out about the $700 million blowout in infrastructure costs this morning,'' Mr Buswell said.

However, opposition leader and former treasurer Eric Ripper says some of the cost pressures were predi ...

Still doesn't claim the state can't afford it.

I see Buswell playing politics and suitably preparing for their own expenditure re; the Nationals.

True it was Rippers idea but Ripper really no longer has a say in it so the current GOvt will be held accountable, no the previous GOVT.

Re:Barnett and city projects Reply to this message
yes-does seem funny;the Libs can justify cuts to the budget by saying it was put in train by ripper-but when it is on the other side of the ledger-they are not obligated to carry out spending ,the Labor govt had already promised.

Re:Barnett and city projects Reply to this message
can anybody join the fry?

now, i am concerned first with this stupidity "taugh on crime!" and macho images...

i did presented several times statistical data from various countries and re-offending ratio, countries with harshest sentences and highest finest/population ratio have actually extremely high re-offence ratio as well, we are currently somewhere in the middle of the stack... but, please bear in mind that wa, have 1,8million population and 7000 cops... austria for example have 8million population and 4000 cops... and re-ofence in austria is about 20% in wa is 50%! but there is 700 cops busy with traffic offences in wa nearly 4,000... get the priority right first...

now, regarding matter of perth, i would actually love to have railway either sink or dome build over it and allowing building deveolpment over then freed wellington/railway pde corridor. it would look stunning if this is allowed to proceed...

fantasy visions from foreshore development are exactly that... costing alone of these wonderfull pics of single item is more than whole wa budget, and we are still not dubai or kuwait! that is just as a reminder... wa of course cam afford that if we become separate state, but dissoulution of the commonwealth is not on the agenda yet...

i am postulating for years for permission to build city centre, keep facade as it is, but allow building 4 to 8 store building behind it! let commerce be ground or first floor, let parking lot be first floor, or underground, but let people live in the city! allow all these bullcreeks and rest of tehm to die! let city be alive... city even with dls, and 24/7 shopping centres still will be dead - people make city not dls or 24/7 shopping...

Re:Barnett and city projects Reply to this message
Perth is the capital but it is not the state. Successive governments have milked regional WA for all its worth, belltowers, stadiums, hospitals, rail links and in country areas; closures, restructures, roads in decay, infrastructure falling apart and it would seem that a level of outrage exists when the "natural" exploitation of the wealth generating areas of the state is tempered. Strange indeed or is it unsurpassed greed?

Re:Barnett and city projects Reply to this message
Colin Barnett has canceled the train line extension to both Butler, and the Airport.

Apparently, they aren't necessary.

So why would Barnett and his crew WANT to expand the suburbs (a proven disaster), without providing adequate transport to and from these areas. Of course, he want people to drive cars - he thinks it's their right...

...yep, real sustainable over the long term. Everybody out in the suburbs, driving their own cars to and from 'woop woop'.

Barnett is an idiot.

Nothing today.

We know that the train line expansion won't go ahead. The stadium, museum, entertainment precinct, naming of 'Heath Ledger' theatre etc. are all either being canceled, postponed or 'altered'.

Re:Barnett and city projects Reply to this message
heath ledger theatre we can safely skip... he is dead and that do not make him a great actor...

i do regret skipping railway extensions, albeit if they are offset by city development - that is fine with me!
