Re:Perth is not Dullsville (PREVIEW)
Why do we have to go out somewhere to have fun. Here in Perth we like to play sports or just wind down with a few friends a couple of drinks and a bbq.
As far as i'm concerned...you make your own fun!
This is what people say, when the place where they live is BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! |

Boring or not, we don't utilise what we have and make the most of it. It becomes more apparent to me daily that the illustrious arms of government and councils, are too frightened to do anything to change the status quo, unless of course they have their own agenda to push.
BBq's and sports weekends are usually associated with families and children....been there done that. Sometimes I actually like to do something other than stay in my own suburb cooking a sausage. |

Jeff Kennett did have a point
I moved to Perth 4 years ago and I find some of the debates in Perth and WA absolutley narrow minded. Although Perth positives far outweigh the negatives there are some isssues where perth needs to grow up.
Sport - theres AFL, AFL or AFL summer its AFL selections and cricket. Perth's media when it comes to sport is very narrow minded. A wider range of sport needs to be addressed by perth Media stations.
Extended trading hours - time Perth and WA got on with it. The other states in the east have survived and there are more benefits that you realise, but it needs to be done to see those benefits. Some of the arguements against extended trading hours that Perth people use are just plain silly.
Daylight savings - about time, love it, hope WA moves with the times and allows people the extra time in the evening to enjoy Perth's great weather. |

I think JK had several points - all good ones!
Let's face it, we have one daily newspaper, which loves to let all of us know that it has the highest number of sales than any other newspaper in the land. Welll helllooooo....what else are you going to read with your coffee each morning???? So, unfortunately, there is little choice but AFL and it's media driven. Tho, The Force is making a dent!
As soon as the idea about extended trading hours was mentioned again in the same sentence as DLS, it was howled down. Now that was a referendum that had a clear cut yes or no answer a couple of years ago - not! |

| I think all the Perth haters should think themselves lucky that they are free to leave at any time they choose. Why don't you fly off to the endless adventures of the East coast and leave the rest of us to enjoy our city? |

It was a pretty clear cut no from what I remember. |

Another mindless inbred, how is afraid to think that Perth is not the greatest place on earth. Why are you so afraid of honest criticism? Get your head out of the ground and see that Perth is at best just another place, it is not Utopia, it is boring/ Yes this is where we live and are free to do so, that however does not mean that all is perfect. |

I'm so sick of that attitude which really, does little to constructively address the genuine concerns that are being raised.
IF Perth were to change (big IF), why would that bother you so much - surely you could still partake in the activities that make Perth an enjoyable city for you - while allowing some of us the 'freedoms' to enjoy a more 'varied' lifestyle.
Oh well, doesn't bother me - once I get my degree, I'm off overseas. |

| It doesn't bode well for the future. The mining boom won't last forever and then, watch the city "crash and burn". |

dont think it can be all that bad -when there is a desperate need for office space in the city;surely if we were doing so badly-there would be empty offices ,like there were a couple of years ago.
People seem to keep coming-for some reason.
If it was so bad-they would be heading in the opposite direction.
If it's all just about money and greed, that they are coming here;that would be a sad reflection on those coming I would think-not the city!
Anyway-enjoy our beautiful city-our lovely weather and the best state in Australia;some of us should be working to maintain it. |

| Too true, but it's not only the mining industry that is losing our new graduates, the medical field also loses large numbers to overseas research facilites. That is just a crime to me. |

Like I said in the other thread. Jobs are plentiful in WA/Perth, the only problem being the majority are related to the mining industry.
Of course, we can expect office space to be lacking when our foresight extends to the size of the 'new' Woodside building. They ran out of office space before it was completed - in typical Perth fashion.
We shouldn't just be maintaing our city - we should be enhancing it. |

| Virtually twisted, I wrote a comment before about people from perth being so parochial that they have to tell people if they dont like it, go elsewhere,or get all precious if someone from over east comes here to live and doesnt do cartwheels in the sand about how this place is so great. My reply was in response to some one a few threads above you, ranting and raving and bagging out the eastern states as people just love to do here (do you think people in melbourne or sydney give a rats poo at complaining about the otherside of the country??). So, it wasnt meant at you. You arent that narrow minded!! |

OK-but do you think the young doctors are leaving Perth because they consider it dull-or because they have better career oppertunities elsewhere.? |

Fact is they are related. It is the same neanderthalic thinking that is opposed to DLS, late night shopping and any other move forward. That also continues to be dependant on the mining industry and creates a boring/dead society.
In other words blood sucking leaches that care of only themselves, not willing to really ask the question " what is best for Perth" |

I don't think 'young doctors' are leaving Perth becasue it is dull - of course not.
However, Perth is doing little to establish itself for the 'post-mining boom' era.
Adding to which, the lack of opportunity for many qualified graduates (doctors and otherwise), combined with the sheltered lifestlye and non-progressive thought that accompanies this city - means that young professionals will continue to leave at an alarming, and dangerous rate. |

| I agree with some of the points you have made about why Perth is a dullsville but i have a few things to say about the others. I have lived in Perth for 11 years and before that i lived in the UK. Perth is a beautiful city with alot moe to offer than first meets the eye. Perhaps this is because we never get to host big concerts for musicians as we are considered 'unimportant' by the eastern states communities. Word gets around becuase peole continue to verbally bash a society that doesthe best it can with what its got. Just becuase we don't have places open allnight long, people do have families and other stuff to do besides working 24/7. I suggest you try looking for other things to do in different areas, not just the city life. |

"I'm so sick of that attitude which really, does little to constructively address the genuine concerns that are being raised."
Why should Perth try and become a Sydney clone for the sake of a minority of whigers? I'm sure all that whinging being done about how boring Perth is has been extremely constructive.
Of course if people really wanted to change Perth, why aren't they out filling Perth with all of these wonderful things we are obviously missing? It's a free country. Theres nothing stopping any of you from starting a space tourism business or bell tower bunjee or whatever you think makes Perth so dull. |

bovine blue said-> "why aren't they out filling Perth with all of these wonderful things we are obviously missing? It's a free country"
Well I would argue 1. money (need lots of capital to get some of these ideas off the ground) and 2. like I said before I don't think enough people in Perth would embrace some of the more innovative ideas for entertainment (so would go bankrupt). SO who is going to start a business that costs lots of money to start and little chance of being sustainable??
Also I don't think anyone has mentioned anything about Perth becoming a Sydney clone (most people would argue that Melbourne and the Gold Coast are the most undullsville cities in Australia). People are just comparing Perth to other Australian cities (probably comparisons to Adelaide, Brisbane and Newcastle are more realistic as they have closer population comparitives) |

Bovine,
Your post again fails to address any of the points that were raised, as is the case with most that share your attitude.
Besides, where did I say I wanted Perth to be anything like Sydney. We never will, nor do I expect, or want it to be.
Can't we enhance Perth for the sake of Perth and the OTHER people who live here and wish for more from the city. Perth can still retain it's identity while removing itself from the 'dullsville' tag.
To add to the point(s) mintie made, in many developed cities across the world, the red tape required to establish new ideas is nowhere near the levels found in Perth. |

| Ok, dont worry, I was just being extremely polite and civil. My point was I wasnt having a go at your comment on the thread, just the tunnel visioned parochialist who started this. really didnt want to say this, but, yep, polite and civil out of the average person in Perth is just about as probable as professional and cosmopolitan. I suppose that means I dont like it, so looks like "I'll just have to go elesewhere". |
