'Sport is another example'Your right sport is another example - there is plenty of it throughout the year. We have just had the Hopman Cup - we have Australia VS India coming up next week at the WACA (which is going to get pleeeenty of attention internationally) - an international 20-20 the month after - for the Soccer Fans there are a couple of games coming up for the Glory. All this before the pre- season AFL starts and the Force get going again. You know I believe anyone that thinks WA is Dullsville as far as sport and entertainment goes really needs to ask themselves what they expect out of life. And Aus you can be as pessimistic as you like but the AFL will never become a minor sport in Australia and it really doesn't mean much if it doesnt take off internationally.
I will concede we may not be quite as exciting as Sydney which is a lovely place to visit but I personally wouldnt want to live there. |

| I was taking a look at the list of proposals that got rejected, delayed, or 'modified' while I was away. I tell you what, it has become VERY hard to argue against Perth being 'dullsville'. |

But it is just another reason why Perth is Dull compared to Sydney.
I don`t understand this "mine is bigger than yours" attitude from so called adults. who gives a damn if sydney has more facilities than perth, i and a couple of million more like perth the way it is so if it does not suit you just rack off. |

I couldn't care less about Sydney. I 'care' about Perth (well...I don't actually).
Those proposals that have been rejected, modified or delayed merely highlight the issues that prevent this city from reaching its potential.
...and if I have to hear that "if you don't like it leave" attitude one more time...well, let's just say it isn't exactly 'adult'. |

Damn you and your smugness ;)
Serious question though, should a few apartment buildings go up around the city (think what that would do for land), followed by small bars, cafes, restaurants etc. (at the moment, red tape, high costs and risk prevent this from being the case), would the way you go about living your life in Perth change?
How much land do we have? Is it absurd to suggest that we develop, not necessarily by way of height, the city and those surrounding areas, while the rest of the city/state remains relatively untouched? |

how it is that everyone is criticising and nobody somehow leaving to these "better" and not "dull" states? somehow eludes me...
my home country did not like me, i did not like it much either - i left! i love wa and perth (and was living for few years in nsw, vic and sa, capitals as well as regional) and i settled here and still love it!
of course there are some drawbacks! but pluses well outweight minuses! |

A) I am leaving, not to another state, but to another country. That however, is neither here nor there.
B) Now, how about addressing those criticisms??? |

I don't know why Perth is called 'Dullsvile"
It's full of excitement! Try being a white person and ride the trains at night like I do to get to work. If you're not bashed, robbed, spat at, sexually assaulted or racially vilified it's considered a boring ride.
Or try going out for a meal in Northbridge one night. If you make it home alive it's considered a good night.
Dull....NO WAY! |

| freeand happy.....sadly you are spot on with that post. My job sometimes makes me be on the road at night, and the first thing i do when i get on the road is to lock all car doors. Perth is NOT a safe place to be after dark. |

Im afraid you have lost me - I havent been able to understand your last couple of posts.
What proposals that have been rejected or postponed do you refer to and secondly what or where do you want developed. |

First of all, reduce the red tape involved in opening business. The costs and probable rejection of any number of licences only serve to discourage business and investment in the city and surrounding areas (Subiaco, Mt. Lawley etc.)
Allow 'higher' apartment complexes to be built in the city and surrounding areas (it is, after all, a city). This would a) help ease the housing crisis and b) make these areas more 'populated', helping business, lifestyle and cultural growth.
Again, with those areas noted, try to make them more connected. Why the railway between Northbridge and the City hasn't been sunk for example, is beyond me. While we're at it, why isn't the road on James St(?) in Northbridge closed on Friday and Saturday night. Both the police and surrounding businesses have expressed their support for this, yet the city council continues to refuse it.
Stop giving so much power to organisations such as the EPA (I think it's the EPA). Fair enough if they served their purpose, but the head of the EPA has clearly stated his opposition to 'high rise', even when it has been shown to have no negative impact on the environment.
Keep in mind, this is all concentrated to a relatively small area. People can still have their suburbs, their parks and their uninterrupted views of whatever it is they wish to see. I'm just asking for the city to be an actual city.
As for the proposals noted earlier, this website/forum, provides a pretty good list of where Perth is at (from all points of view).

Obviously, it's all one word. |

| Northbridge is okay if you're in a group. If you're by yourself you're better off staying at home. |

| and before someone makes a comment, i live in sydney which has suburbs full of high rises like parramatta, Chatswood, North Sydney, Hornsby, strathfield etc etc. They all have heaps of highrises yet they cannot say that they add culture. they in fact would do the opposite because u loose a sense of community cos u no longer no who is your neighbour and become less likely to get to know anyone else. but business do strive in these suburbs tho. perth needs to find a culture of its own without resorting to wat everyother city has done |

Key word being suburbs. I'm not talking about 'suburbs' as such, more the city and those immediate surrounding areas, all of which have already have a cultural base, albeit relatively dormant. |
