Perth is not Dullsville Reply to this message
Every week there is something in the newspaper making reference to Perth being "Dullsville" and it really annoys me.
Not only because I am sick of hearing this phrase, but also because its just not true!

The thing is with Perth, the life of the city isnt actually IN the city... its in the areas around it.
In general, people just need to get out more, and actually try things that are out of their normal routines.

There has been so much happening down here over the last few months, its just a case of finding out whats on and ACTUALLY DOING IT!

For a start, there have been an enless amount of art and music fesivals, not only in Perth, but also in areas like Joondalup, Fremantle, Margeret River, Busselton and even Wave Rock.

Aside from those, I have also enjoyed the outdoor cinemas in Kings Park, Burswood and Joondalup, friday night markets in Joondalup, canoeing out to Penguin Island, fishing at Two Rocks, 4WD in Lancelin, reef snorkelling at Beaumaris, sunday markets at Freo, the Tri nations beach cricket at Scarbourough, crabbing in Mandurah, the Hopman Cup, the Red Bull Air Race and the other day played "Super golf" (which is golf, but with a giant golfball).

When there's "nothing on," I spend my weekends down at the beach, having BBQs with friends, or down at "The Boat" in Mindarie Quays, where you can enjoy fish n chips and a cold beer on the waters edge, while listening to live bands.

My point is that there is ALWAYS something to do and you dont need to be rich to do it.

There is more to a city than night clubs and 24/7 trading hours! Too many people want Perth to be like Sydney or Melbourne and I honestly dont know why!(Personally, I dont like race riots or street junkies... and just look what happened at the Aus Open this year!!!)

No, we are a better, cleaner and more relaxed city because we are NOT like them.

But that DOESNT make Perth Dullsville!!!!

Perth (WA) is pretty pariochial. It certainly isn't dull for the young (or cashed up) ...of whom Í'm sure you're a member. Good for you to enjoy it.

But for older people with little resources (cash and credit cards) it sure is dull.

Very little music or dance ( and I do not mean old time stuff). Very little innovation. So much is derivative of that from the ES and OS. And those who do try to do something different a so often knocked.

And, yes, my dear, I spent a lot of time in the sun. I've skin cancers to prove it. Nice to live as if you'll never die.

Driving up and down the coast, from south, to north and east. Yep, a lot of fun, but for what?

Crappy, derivative music. Artsy-fartsy dancers and artists and look...no one comes here because we are so up ourselves.

Re:Perth is not Dullsville Reply to this message
On your first point.... yes, you are right... I am young (23), but I am by no means cashed up.

On the contrary, I actually grew up very poor. But as a result, I learnt how to budget and save effectively.

I work in customer service fulltime and study at Uni part time. I also have a morgage.
So I have no more money than anyone else!

*Anyway, aside from that, lots of what I mentioned is free to attend!

As for your critisism of what I like to do in my spare time..... everyone's different!

Just because it doesnt suit your tastes, doesnt mean its a waste of time.

My list is mearly an example of what I like to do. Im sure there are things that would suit the "older people" too.

What Im saying is that it doesnt matter what you're into, or what budget your on, there's a lot more going on in Perth than meets the eye.

Its up to you whether you participate or not.

Personally, I dont like race riots or street junkies...

-------------------
Didn't know Perth was immune to street junkies let alone the gate crashing party gangs that have been sweeping across the suburbs,
every state has these problems, race issues junkies drunks etc
no one can escape these problems if living in the cities nor deny they are there :(

If you don't call Perth a dull city you lack the scope for comparison.

Re:Perth is not Dullsville Reply to this message
Music festivals are great, and what better place to enjoy them then the Perth outdoors. Unfortuantely, Perth is limited in terms of inner-city vibrancy, which for a capital city, is simply not good enough. People need something to do every day, not once a month.

Granted, I am not a 'beach' person, so that is likely to impact my somewhat negative views of Perth. Scarborough should be built up (not necessarily vertically), in terms of dining, shopping and nightlife and given that WA has the most coastline of any place in the world, it isn't a big ask.

Another problem with Perth, it has big city problems without the big city advantages, take for example the cost of living and relatively high-crime rate (compared to major cities around the world). The incidence of crime combined with the drinking culture (of not only Perth, but Australia), really limits the opportunity to develop the nightlife, which is severely lacking.

Perth to me, has so much potential - but certain dinosaurs seem hell bent on holding us back.

Perth is one of the most unique places in the world, being the most isolated metropolis.

Perth is nicknamed for having "The weather california thinks it has". Having Australia's best climate.

Perth is Australia's most cleanest city.

Perth has Australia's most layed back lifestyle.

Perth has one of the cleanest transit systems in the world.

Western Australia has more wild flowers the any other place in the world.

Perth has a booming economy.

Perth has less crime compared to the eastern states.

The list goes on, why do they still call Perth dullsville?

Perth is the best city in the world. Anybody not happy with our dull little city can always cash in the money thay have made from our booming property market and go elsewhere.

Maybe, but that doesn't begin to fix the array of issues that plague this otherwise wonderful city.

NB; I do plan on 'cashing in' and leaving the city.

Wrong and wrong.

- jaykaye_09

Actually, both what I said is a fact! Perth has one of the cleanest, most reliable and most attractive transit systems in the world.

Less Crime is also a fact. Now, I am not saying there is no crime, crime is a way of our society in every city. But Perth has lower crime the eastern staters, accept that or not, I don't care, lol.

Try, for example, Singapore and Hong Kong - then tell me our public transport is clean and reliable.

As for crime. If you want to compare to the Eastern States, then WA does have a higher rate of crime (so far as one defines crime) - that is fact. Out of the major regions in WA, Perth still has the highest total crime rate.

Re:Perth is not Dullsville Reply to this message
wow this looks like a debate, but I am going to add on what is being yelled for.

Perth's Transit system:

I was reading an article last week actually, and in back and white, I read something like this:

"Perth's Transit system is one of the worlds most reliable, environmentally friendly and growing people movers on earth".

as for the crime, well, I don't know any facts on that, all I know is I have friends living in Sydney and Melbourne who all said when they visited Perth late last year, that Perth was a much friendlier and safer place.

But I am not going to brag, all I know is that as Australia, we should be proud of what we have, and we shouldn't downgrade any of our cities.

Well Perth ranked 21st in the world in 2006. Behind Sydney and Melbourne though. I think we could all agree that the lifestyle in Perth suits many people and that those who find it dull are lucky to have the freedom to move anywhere in our fantastic country.

Just think, you could be in Baghdad, certainly not a dull place.

I have moved to Perth from Adelaide, by comparison Perth has a lot more to offer. However, I have always been a big city person and am likely to move to Melbourne or Sydney when I can find a suitable job.

Re:Perth is not Dullsville Reply to this message
Perth in my opinion would be the worst city I have ever lived in. Sydney far outweighs it.

Why is Perth a Dullsville?

Everything closes at 5pm
Everything closes on a Sunday
Highest Home burglary rate in Australia
Don’t feel safe walking around the city at night (that’s probably because its dark and everything is closed!)
Its expensive – You get much more value for money in Sydney.
Perth people are rude
They have a joke of a transport system
Perth people get confused by daylight savings
So do their cows
To many drunken yobo’s (I’m sure Sydney has, but I don’t see them, just go to Perth Train Station any time of the day to see what I’m talking about)
Perth has no opportunities
WA Education system is a joke.

There are so many other things wrong with Perth and they all make it a dullsville, When you go to Perth for a holiday there is NOTHING at all to do, its BORING. When you live there you cant relax because you are so depressed because you know you are living in the most boring city in the world. That’s why it has the highest home burglary rate in the country, because people are bored!
