I don't believe there are any jobs in mining for people without experience... and I don't know how people get experience, unless they either know someone or do a university course (then they can do vacation work etc).

Mining companies aren't interested in matured age worker - without experience.. It's a waste of time trying to get a job in a mining company looking on forums like this...

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
jo.cherokee77 well that depends on what job you are willing to do to get in there, and as for the don't look at mature people what a load of crapp, i know quite a few older people in the jobs and they employ even people in there 60's to drive some of the trucks. If you have that defeated feeling already you won't get a job in the mining industry you have to be positive and show them you can do the work too.

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
KCGM has an intake of trainee drivers and process technicians once a year. The training wage isn't too bad from what I hear, but you have to watch the newspapers for the intake to be advertised.

Mind you things are on a slight downturn here in Kalgoorlie, and then you have to find somewhere to live. Houses here to rent are up around the $400 a week mark.

RE: KCGM has an intake of trainee drivers

Don't bother about KCGM, they were making people pay out the $5000 to do the Workready course, even though there weren't any jobs. Workready were putting everyone that applied to do the course through even though they had decided they were unsuitable to do that sort of job. So 3/4 of the course group were paying out for nothing, and the 'certificate of attendance' is as useful as 1 legged butt kicker, because Workready are and never have been a Registered Training Organisation.

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
I agree completely with you. My husband is an experienced truckie with operating up to CAT793's dump trucks and he is currently out of work & has been looking for about 6 weeks now without any success. Our mining industry here in Ausie land has dropped somewhat. You really do need to know how to operate them, including practical & theory. Everyone seems to think its so easy but we have hit hard times with our mining industry. My hubby has been working on the mines operating these dump trucks for several years now. This is the 1st time he has had to look for another job on the mines operating dump trucks. It isn't who you know it's what you know & it is getting very hard to find another job. He worked up at the Argyle Mine Site.

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
Yeah I will back you up on that. I am now out of pocket $5000 and I have no job with KCGM. All i have from the course Is a certificate of attendance and not a statment of attainment which is recognized all over australia. I would have expected to receive a stratement of attainment as KCGM superpit had written on there website, Workready australia where a registered training organisation. Also workready australia had on there website the registered training organisation logo. When They are NOT a registered training organisation.

Hi Michelle- it was great to read your posts and to hear that there are women drivers are of particular interest to companies.

As with many other people who have replied to your very popular post, I am also interesting in dump truck driving and was particularly interested to read your message as I live in Victoria.

If possible, could you please send me an email providing me with the contact details of the relevant people that I would need to speak to?
My email is stephanie1301@yahoo.com

Thanks heaps mate :)

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
1stly im not replying to any particular email, but as a mining supervisor, and having done this type of work for 30+ YEARS, i can let you all know, very few unskilled miners will get into mining with the current economic situation. for the past 10 years we have been forced to basically take whoever we can get, SORRY but most of these people think that they are miners, but ,, in the true sense, really arent, now that the old school miners are back on the hunt they will certainly be my first choice. Its not about ability to learn, or anything like that, its about work ethic, attitude, and ability to do the job and not whinge and sook about every little task that has to be done.the old days of hard or go home are back,SORRY FOLKS,,THATS REALITY

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
Hi ink_man_56... what makes you think that many of the people who have put posts up on this forum are incapable of having a good work ethic, attitude and ability to do the job when you know very little about most of them??! What on earth makes you think that we will "whinge" and "sook" about every little task that needs to be done when you wouldn't have a clue about us??! I'm not disagreeing about the fact that most mines now probably want experienced people etc (as would most companies in the current economic crisis. Work is difficult to come by full-stop in any industry, and that shouldn't be news to anyone), but I think some of your other comments were a bit presumptuous.
