Hi there,
Good idea getting your truck license but my advice is once you have your license then use it in NZ. Dump truck driving jobs in the mines are a bloody myth. Maybe 10 years ago you could get a driving job in any of the mines but that is no longer the case. There are so many people wanting dump truck jobs that you will have a better chance getting a job flying jumbo jets with Qantas (actually thats probably true!)
I've got MR, HR, blue, green cards and any other card you can think of and I'm still waiting for a foot in the door! Most annoying thing is they ask if you have mining experience. Like hullllo ...so think about it, and by the way rental properties in WA is skyrocketing. |

| Guys you might want to try a company in Perth called Immersive Operator Training (089404 6060).They do all sorts of courses including a Dump Truck 5 days course on a Cat 777 (80 tonne). The training is done at a quarry and is very simular to a mines working conditions. 80% of their students that pass gain employment within the first 6 months of doing the course.(mostly WA & QLD)They do not guarentee employment , but they do give you heaps of information on where to go and how to go about it. They even tweak your CV to make you more employable. Give them a call and whey will send/email a info pack. |

| Hi there, thanks for that information there coxy3127 very helpful. Is that a $4000 course too? I am keeping my options open and not going for a dump truck driver job now, that is at the end of my list. but i will do RC offsider assistant driller, and Air Circulation assistant driller. I haven't had experience in mining but i have done alot of rock hounding in remote areas in all elements of weather and no alot about the geology side of things.there are plenty of other jobs too such as geologist assistant etc, though most still want experience in the mining industry. I have lived in Oman the middle east for 6 years which was like desert and very hot conditions which i loved. Plus i would go for a mid day walk for an hour and a half in the heat and just thrived in it. Have now completed the senior first aid course with red cross , and will do the induction when i get to perth on the 19 october i am flying in. so will do the courses i need to do in the first few weeks.I have accommodation in perth so don't need to rent a place at the moment.I know it is hard to get your foot in the door, but i will do cleaning or kitchen hand, and work my way up if need be |

| Thanks for your message islandscooter58. I have only got my MR as i decided if i need the HR will do it all in aussie. there are plenty of other jobs with semi skills too, so won't be just aiming for a truck driving job as i know every man and his dog want one of those. Its a case of who you know in the mines too who can look out for jobs and let you know. But alas i know no one in there yet. Though the friend i will stay with has a friend who is driving the dump trucks in kalgoorlie so she may become my contact when i meet her. So i will do any mucky job or what i wouldn't normally apply for to get a foot in the door. I don't mind physcial, not shovel work though, but other physcial jobs outside. |

Hi kiwigal,
No, do your class 4 in NZ then do conversion here. All you do when you get here is fill in their forms pass the theory test and you get your HR and no practical required. One thing Ive learnt in WA or Australia for that matter, is Ozzies are sticklers for following things by the book. Thats not a bad thing but some people here carry the 'official way' of doing things a little too far! So its easier to do it there. For conversions you will need your license and passport plus proof of address. Then pay the necessary fees. One thing I regret is not getting my class 5 done in NZ (HC equivalent for OZ).
Anyway I like your kiwi pluckiness. Good luck. |

| Hi islandscooter58. Can't do my HR here now,run out of time. I had to wait till the end of october to get the learners licence HR and then i had to pay over a $850.00 to do a two day course to do the practical and no trucks to practice on in the meantime.then i would have to wait until few weeks before they sent the licence out. plus i would have to take time of work as it is on the other side of auckland for the class 4 licence. If i did the dump truck course with my MR licence are they licenced to give you the HR licence if you pass the course? I am probably just going to do cleaning or kitchen hand or something to get into the mining industry and then see if other doors open for me, though i could do administration or data entry as i have done that all my life. Thanks for liking my kiwi pluckiness, some might think i am mad as i am 53 years old, but only look 38 and pump iron to stay fit, and hike, and think why the hell would you want to work in the mines at that age.But i suppose it goes whey would i want to get a truck licence at my age, lol. I did plan on driving those dump trucks but it seems to hard to get into one of those, so that is why i haven't bothered with the HR i the end. Plus my friend i am staying with in perth maybe shifting to brisbane so i wanted to get to aussie before the xmas time and get sorted so that i have somewhere to stay until i do. |

Hey kiwigal,
I'm not sure if you can do the dump truck course on an MR license? But remember as one of the posters mentioned earlier it will set you back by about $4000.
There are a lot of office admin type jobs here and with your experience and skills Im sure you'll get a job quickly. I arrived here 1st of July this year and scored a truck driving job in the first week. Admittedly I signed up with an agency which is probably the fastest way of securing employment. Most agencies are pretty helpful. Don't forget to bring all dox eg cv, job refs, id's, bank acc details etc. A police clearance record is very helpful particularly when you are applying for a rental house or unit.
Opening a bank acc here is pretty straight forward. So best thing is, come over find a job quickly so you have an income and while you're working start looking at the mining ops. If possible stay with friends until you are financially independant.
53!!! sheesh you're still a spring chook lol! I reckon employers perception of age has changed so maturity is definitely an advantage, hell I know of some employers here hiring staff as long as they can walk or are breathing! By the way if you were staying in NZ a little longer I could have recommended a friend who can fast track driver licenses....legitimately of course! Well best of luck |

| the only thing about driving trucks is only have driven one 4 times before getting my licence. so no practical experience at all on them. so that is why i have put it to the end of my list. I am still here to the 18 october just leaving where i am on the 3 oct and staying with a friend till i fly out. I wish i had known earlier that if i just got my learners that i would only need to do the theory before getting my licence in aussie for the Hr , bugger. When they swap your licence over to an aussie one, do we not see our nz one anymore? Otherwise i could have flown back to nz on a holiday, got my learners HR and get them to send it on to aussie when it has been done. Yes as for administration i have done pay roll for 5 years, but wouldn't want to really do that again. don't mind just data entry, loading information into a system as i am fast and accurate and enjoy just doing that. Yes i think alot of employers percentage of age has changed for some. I work with all males at my job at the moment and all under the age of 34. I didn't put my age on my cv and didn't tell them my age, but got the job. They thought i was 38 ,so just goes to show you. I'm fit with only a few grey hairs, and not many lines on my face, so bring it on,lol. I hope i get a job in the mining industry but i want to live in aussie permanently so may have to do something else in the mean time. what i need is a contact in the mining places who can keep an ear out for jobs going, that would be great. thanks for your input islandscooter58 |

shaundouglas505
real mature mate
as some1 said earlier
you really got to know some1 to get into this industry
i've worked in the club scene for 3yrs, various factory jobs over the last 4 or 5yrs, and now im back in customer service, call centre work for 2.5yrs
Im looking at heading to the mines myself, have a mate down in Roxby Downs who's uncle runs the joint so i've pretty much got my foot in the door but its not quite what i wanna do
I wanna be a dump truckie, luckily working for Telstra i've met quite a few people in the mines, which 1 of them told me to get in contact with them when im ready, early 20's female who is a dump truck driver
For those of you who want to get in, just keep trying, persist, every1 you meet who works in the mines just keep in contact with them and eventually something will come up
I've been trying for a few years to get in now and finally got a foot in the door :> |

Not replying to anyone inparticular, but don't believe all this hype about "Getting your HR Licence and getting in the mining game"..it's a load of bull.
Hubby was told this last year, he spent over $2,000 and is STILL waiting for the call.
He applies for at least 2 jobs a day, and he NEVER hears back.
He has been told on numerous occassions that it's not what you know, it's who you know in the mining game.
This is very true.
And most of the Dump truck jobs ask for "Experienced" workers only..like hellooooo..where are you supposed to get the experience in the first place?
Plus, if you have a look at some of the jobs listed on job sites, the pay isn't all it's cracked up to be.
People keep on crapping on about $100k a year...pffffffffttt....no t always the way.
hubby is getting about the same hourly rate now as a HR truck driver/removalist, as he would if he worked as a dumpy.
good luck all if you can get into the game, and get the big bickies... but don't expect too much. |
