Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
Hi Everyone, i am really finding this page interesting on the dump truck jobs in aussie. I too amd looking for a dump truck job. I have just completed the theory part of class 2 in nz and hope to do the practical in three months time. When reading alot of the ads for dump truck adverts on this pdf pages selling the booklets on various aspects of mining jobs. I see they say HT licence. I was talking to someone yesterday who said i only need a MR licence, can someone confirm for me please. As when i have completed class 2 here in nz i was going to go for class 4 licence, or at least the learners part of it. I to want a mining job, either as a dump truck driver, or a water truck, field assistant, i am willing to do some of the jobs that wouldn't be my first pick, but to get oneself into a mining job doing something. Then you can always apply for something else once the three months is up. I am in my 50's but get taken for 38 years old, i am fit, pump iron and can walk for miles, but quite fancy a dump truck job. Any contacts would be great. I find all this so interesting, and i do have a passion for geology so hope to do some rock hounding when i am over in aussie. where is the best places to go. people have said western aussie as it is easier to get into. sheila

Hi there, the guy who told me has his own web site and said that most dump trucks are single axle so only MR rig is required. You get told that many things ,that you don't know what you should be getting as a licence and find you just end up spending lots of money doing stuff that may not be required, its hard because you really want to do the right things to get yourself in the mining jobs.

Then you can aim to drive the big boys toys.

And the mining companies love the chicks driving them these days

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
thanks for that, it does cost a bit as to get the full licence in 3 months you have to go to a truck driving school and pay money. To get the class 4 you don't need to do the theory again, just pay the money and then you have your learners, not sure if they would give me the full licence since i wouldn't be driving in nz. So wouldn't probably get enough practical experience and would have to leave that part for in the mining courses or in a mine who trains you to drive the dump trucks there ways. what about these other machines the have, loaders etc are they any better to drive than the truck?

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
lol. yes i bet they do. I have driven a fork lift in a course i did years ago, and was voted the best driver out of 10 blokes and one other female. I was told then by the tutor i should learn to drive a truck, but wasn't really interested in driving one then. Though the guys were told that i was better than all of them for speed, accuracy and safe at the same time. plus some of the guys had 10 years experience and were still making holes in the warehouse walls with there not so accurate fork placements, lol

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
I don't to drive mult combination vehicles, just the dump trucks or water trucks for that matter. Though i quite like the idea of a field assistant, doing a bit of geology which i enjoy. Have got my learners part of Class 2 on monday so now am concentrating on getting the practical side done for that one. Then i may have to wait a while then i can get the learners licence for class 4 by just paying the fee as i don't need to sit the theory again as i have just done it for the class 2 licence and it is the same one.

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
Getting the job is the first obstacle when you have no experience. Unskilled jobs are available but of course they would prefer skilled if they can get the people.

Some advice from what I've picked up since starting:

If you are not a confident driver, can't reverse park, and don't like driving in slippery, rough conditions... then give it a miss, as you will hate it in a very short period of time. This job isn't for everyone.

Further training on other pieces of plant are available and can increase your hourly rate along with the amount of time you work with the same company. Makes you more valuable as you can be utilised on different plant and equipment.

The hours are long - 12.25 a day/night, rain, hail or shine. Stuff up and you will be out the door. No second chances - no excuses.

If you can't follow instructions or listen, then don't waste their or your time. Not everyone will make it through the first month.

Go with a good dose of common sense and ability to pick things up quickly and you will be fine.

I've been working as a driver for 2 months and still love going to work every day. Yes the driving can get monotonous, yet it is the people I work with that make the job enjoyable. I was surprised to find that where I work everyone is supportive and helpful and go out of their way to work together as a team. Something I haven't found in many workplaces in a long time. Stick with it.

Do a search on mining companies, their mine locations, then phone to get the mine supervisor or managers name and email a CV. Also keep an eye out on the web for news of new mines opening and contracts being awarded. This is what happened for me. It took over 6 months before I got a job, so patience and persistence is important. Take some initiative and things will pay off.

I'am also looking for mine work as a first timer and are currently doing my hr licence as this seems to be necessity in most areas.I've been looking for for 3 weeks now and have come
up with 2 applications in the drilling area but nothing in dump trucks with no experience.

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
missmac, did you go to a dump truck driving school to be able to drive a dump truck? Or is it because you had a friend in the industry? I would like a contact name too if anyone would oblidge. I only have an MR licence, but interested in anything from, offsider to RC or Air cir drilling, surveyor assistant, blast assistant, dump truck learner driver? or cleaner ,kitchen hand, anything to get into the mining industry first of all. I am moving to perth on the 19 oct, and then hopefully to kalgoorlie in a couple of weeks from then, just enough time to get a bank account open, and also tax file and aussie licence. so any one out there who are in the mines with anything that a hard working physical female can do. remote areas is good, and the heat not a worry.

Re:Dump Truck operators WA?? Reply to this message
Hi there, Have been in WA for 4 weeks now, left NZ with HR licence (Minimal experience but Dad had a trucking bus so have been around trucks all my life..i'm a very confident driver with great peripheral vision, good backing skills etc) I have been in the construction/landscaping fields most my life ...not adverse to hard work. My problem......how to get experience as a dump truck driver. For the past 4 weeks have sent off my c/v, filled out applications and sent to every mining co and employment agency i could...dealing with 20 yr old receptionist's and getting no face to face time with anyone authorised to hire!!!! Very very frustrating!
Did go to a recent mining expo here in Perth and got to talk to a Construction Co who build villages for the mining camps...first face to face conversation..and guess what got a job..money's good..but its office work and i'm stuck in Perth...i am not a city girl. But this proves i'm employable and have good attitude, ethics etc etc. Now feel trapped..don't want this type of job. HELP! But how do i get that foot in the door...where are all the real people, you know the ones that can identify other hard working people with dreams that they want to achieve!!!!
I'm prepared to do any kind of job within the mining industry, used to living in harsher conditions and ahve tarvelled alot,...and get I on with everybody
If anyone can help, if anyone knows someone...promise I won't let you down.

Hi there Michelle,

Your help and info on this site is much appreciated and helpful. I am a 34 year fit female and am very interested in working in the mines driving the dump trucks, However, i dont have any experience. I have also heard that some companies do prefer females and also with no experience so they can train you their way. Unfortunatly i havnt been able to find any of these companies yet. Not sure if this info is just gos or not.
I would love if you could email me with any info or contacts you may have if you can.

Cheers, Nelly
