Hi there,
My Husband is wanting to gain employment as a dump truck operator in the mines (we are located in NSW) and is willing to relocate to WA if possible. I know there is another thread re: Mining jobs but i wanted to be more specific in this thread for Dump truck operators...
so, he is thinking of doing the QFS training, but heard it will cost close to $4,000 which is okay... but bit scary as a job isnt guarenteed...
Can anyone recommend any other avenues to get into this line of work or give any tips etc...??
Any answers would be much appreciated!!
Regards,
Belinda. |

| There are courses at Pt Augusta TAFE however the cost is about $2,500 which still gives you only a 10% chance of securing a position. Just rang about it today |

My i suggest that he saves his money. For example, write out a resume saying he has the experience on dump trucks, all the licences etc, then see how many responses he gets.
The answer is none. Don't be fooled by all the hipe!!! |

To get a job at a good mine you really need to know people within the company.
My brother has just got a job up at some mine with no experience as a truck driver but he knew people up there in the firast place.. maybe see who he knows and get themto reccomend him. |

Hi Belinda
I've just got myself a dump truck job for a mine in Victoria. No experience, no cards paying around $100K... not bad for no experience? and can't get this kind of salary working in a high stress corporate job in the city.
They actually didn't want me to have previous experience as they provide all the training themselves as part of your induction. I had booked in to do my cards but got told it didn't matter.
Also the job wasn't advertised. Came via 6 people by word of mouth. Had a guy's name at the mine, phoned and got his contact number and email address and contacted him via email. Was relatively easy.
I wanted to do this type of work when I went to WA but got told by the employment agencies I needed all the tickets before they would even consider me. Was a considerable outlay with no guarantee of work.
I would suggest asking everyone you or your friends know that work in mining to keep an ear out for any jobs coming up and then keep following it up, make enquiries, leave a CV and continue to phone on a regular basis.
FYI... they are always looking for women to drive these trucks, so if you are interested you might find it easier for you to open the door to get the job and your husband could use this as leverage.
Good luck.

| Why anyone wants to be a dump truck driver beats me. It's about the most mind numbing driving job you can do and not the best paid. Tell him to get his MC and drive trucks. It's far easier to get a job, hell you can jump from job to job anywhere in Aus, much better pay, variety and job satisfaction. |

| Try BGC at Wodgina mine site which is about an hour out of Port Hedland. They take on people with little or no experience. The starting pay might not be great - approx 80K, but they will train people on Dumpies, graders, diggers & dozers, and it's a decent spot to work. |

Hi Michelle,
Was just reading about what you said. My parnter and I are keen to work in the mines to make some money! We have no experience but we are willing to move where ever (currently in NSW). You are working in the mines, have you heard anything about 2 positions for dump truck drivers?

| Hi Michelle, I read your email in relation to Dump Truck Driving and wanted to thank you for the information you passed on. I have just started the ball rolling to find out as much as I can about getting a dump truck driver position. I live in Queensland where there is no opportunities to train in Dump Truck driving. Like you I have been considering relocating to WA to get these tickets, but I simply can't afford the prices. So, ideally I would love to go somewhere where I can learn on the job and I couldnt care if the money wasn't that great either, its just something I really want to do. I am a single, fit and healthy 35 year old woman. I dont have any contact in the mines. Could you please, please, please (begging... on my knees) be my contact in the mines. I would appreciate any feedback you could give me. I would also just like to stay in contact to get to know what life is really like working and living on the mines. My email address is allisonmortonalli@hotmail .com or you can just reply to this message. Thanks, have a great day :) |
