Is Perth a Backwater ? Reply to this message
My wife & I stayed in Perth for 10 days with some friends from Melbourne & hadn't been there for 11 years & had visions of drastic changes since my last visit , there were changes as far as the appearence of new housing & infaustrucure but no changes in the Country towm mentality of some of the locals.
At a BBQ I mentioned weekend trading & asked why Perth doesn't have it & was told it was not wanted , so you have to run the gauntlet & do all your shopping before Midday Sat (like Melbourne 20 years ago) Daylight Saving brought up , was told it would be hard to put the kids to sleep for God's sake & was called an 'Easterner' in a sarcastic joking manner , then I mentioned Westcoast Eagles & Ben Cousins & Mainwaring & heard every excuse for Cousins drughabits known to man , even that he was set up ..
I heard alst Jeff Kennett went to Perth & was asked what he thought of Perth city & said Perth CBD 'Lacked Soul" as a response, he got bagged on Perth radio for days after that.
Then we went to Perth CDB & noticed after dark on Friday night the city was dead...

Shops trade until 5pm on Saturdays and some trade 11 to 3 or thereabouts on Sundays.

We had a referendum on 24 hour trading but it was badly worded and lost.

Most of us support the idea if dead central (Adelaide) can have it so can we.

Jeff Kennett is right the city lost its soul long ago. It was a place where people lived and worked until the late 70's when the last resident was gleefully chased out of King St. From there the nightlife and heart of the city died. It became a CBD a place that everyone left at 5pm. Even the Coles store shut down. All the big band pubs went and even the big disco's closed. The city after dark is a ghost town and shadow of its former self.

There are now a lot of flashy apartments being built in the city and on its fringes and I hope that the people that buy or lease the accommodation start putting some pressure back on for some life after dark.

Perth is rated, or was, by Lonely Planet as predictable and I agree. We did not get any big shows thus far this year no Ozzie, Whitesnake, not sure about Iron Maiden.

But, yes I know bad english, if we got rid of the East (and its $3bn a year rip off) and got some better leaders we could be like Dubai and personal tax free in 5 years.

The licence plates for the cars in WA should say:

WA state of Myopia.

Because that's what it is at the moment we lack vision, which isn't helped by having a bunh of clowns running the two major parties.

That would imply that the other States are somehow holding us back, which they aren't.

It's the people that live here, politicians and citizens, that hold Perth back.

I agree the apathetic nutters hold us back but we could be so much further advanced if we kept that $3bn a year we currently lose.

um... then that must be how we like it. Since when is being like Sydney or Melbourne something to aspire to?

Okay, I've never been to Perth (going there in October) but I have heard that they don't suffer, unlike Adelaide, from Easternstatesitis....that is, they are happy to carve out their own identity.

As for shopping hours, well yes we here in Adelaide do have 9-5/530pm Mon-Wed, 9am-9pm Thursdays (suburban) and 9am-9pm Fridays (city) plus Sunday from 11am/12pm-1/2/3/4/5pm and I can't imagine why Perth wouldn't want that. Perhaps as you say, unclefatso01, the referendum was poorly worded?

I reckon Adelaide deserves more criticism than Perth. At least Perth has its own identity - Adelaide is stuck in the middle and does suffer from a REAL identity crisis (Easternstatesitis).

So what's the fancination with being like Melbourne and Sydney Patriotus?? Why do you and everyone else think that upgrading Perth we have to be a clone of another city??? is it p e n i s envy or something??

Who said anything about Melbourne or Sydney? Why can't we 'evolve' for our own sake. Our identity (whatever that might be, I'm not sure) can still remain.

Besides, is the culture in Melbourne so bad? Plenty of museums, shopping, cafe's, bars & pubs, suburbia, parks etc.

Agreed trev, but the way I see it, the whole debate has been fruitless. One side offers a criticism (be it constructive or otherwise), the other, rather unproductively, tells us to f.ck off "if we don't like it".

I've raised the same points over, and over...yet NOBODY has been able to reasonably address or respond to them.

Case in point: tick.

Have you raised them with those in authority ?....town planners, MP`s, they are the ones to moan at. all you will get here are the two sides you mention, none of us can change a damn thing, even if we wanted to...cheers.

I agree jay. I love this town but it is seriously lagging behind the worlds great cities when it comes to culture and entertainment. A great place to live, yes. But if i was a toursit i wouldnt visit here. And the whole "if you dont like it leave" attitude is really a very simplistic respose to the greater issues of this city.

I don't have too. They have been raised before, on many occasions. Just as they have been rejected, often without good reason (see Peter Nattrass)

Agreed! have a look at the boring on-going joust about SA V TAS!!!! Don't these people have a life? It's amazing how these people knock everything and everyone. I love SA, but also think all other states have great things going for them. We are ONE country and should stick together.

Perth will no longer be a sleepy backwater in a few years, the influx of open minded people due to the mining boom will see to that.
If Day light saving and seven day trading do not get through this time they will in a few more years.

It is inevitable that Perth and its inbred oldies will be dragged kicking and screaming out of the past.

Yes ausgal an influx of open minded people. But more so an influx of uneducated Easterners who came to cash in on the boom. Because all are quality big thinkers and brains are getting jobs over east or overseas.....

Imagine Perth with a true cosmopolitan lifestyle open 24hours a day. Day light saving. It will happen one day, each year the population of perth becomes more and more outgoing, the old diehard WA inbreds are a dieing breed as the state is flooded with new blood.
