Could someone explain to me why a sentry is refused a breathing app. when requested and the gas meter is going off it's tit from ammonia emissions? My kids life is worth more than the mining magnates profit line!!!!!!!!!!
Excessive exposure to ammonia results in breathing difficulties, fluid build up in the lungs and DEATH. |

oh ok poly-sorry about your son hope he is OK.
OHS-possibly better AFTER the fact;thats why we need good unions;who these days ,are forced into the background!
-if they get a look in at all.
People may not like, the likes of Joe Mc Donald and Kevin Reynolds-but they have always been there for thier guys-someone has to be!
Some sites do not allow unions these days-so there is no one there, keeping check of the companies ;where they put profits before the health and safety of workers.
The sad fact is;where money is involved-if the profit margins are great;sometimes they can weigh up the cost of sickness and death of workers, against safety or a shut down and opt to allow dangerous conditions to occur;if they can get away with it-because it is more 'cost effective'.
With the huge push for expansion these days; in the North;there are bound to be some very bad cases ,coming up over time!
It was a similar situation; with GM in the US;where there was a faulty component found on thier cars-but they weighed up, that it woudl be cheaper ,to pay compensation for any deaths incurred ;rather than recall a large amount of cars ,to rectify the fault.
Its all about profits, margins , deadlines, productivity and shareholders these days.
The worker-is just another cog in the wheels and expendable or replaceable!
Unless the unions are there to oversee and protect;it is up to the workers themselves;to have their own interests at heart-because the company wont !
We worked in the north 20 years ago-and times were just starting to change then!We got out! |

Provided that they ask permission to come on to the site with appropriate notice NO site can prevent a union rep coming on.
I recall the Unions at Golden Grove, when it was being built 20 years ago, threatening strike action if we breath tested the blokes that were obviously going to work underground p'd off their brains. So they aint that hot.
People like McDonald and Reynold are thugs and make the honest movement look bad unfortunately members stupdily handing over their votes to mates to use as proxies keep them there. All union meetings should be compulsory attendance and all votes counted by the WAEC.
Unions have their place without a doubt but some are very very good at shooting themselves right in the foot. |
