I could hardly believe what I heard last night. Adrian Barich in his parting words of the sports report "Oh, and the WA Reds went down to the Windsor Wolves. Bet you're sorry you missed it!"

For those non rugby leage fans, the WA Reds are a re-incarnation of the Western Reds and are playing in the second-tier competitiion. The idea is that we hope to build a fan base and be admitted to the top grade in 2012.

With comments like that however, it makes me think that Channel 7 and co actively want this bid to fail. It's bad enough the results and stories (brief at that) are buried at the end of the sports section of the West but unnecessary, spiteful comments like that make it almost impossible to drum up support.

I urge everyone to give the boys a go and come along to the next game @ Members Equity Stadium on Saturday 17th May @ 7:30pm. Let's show the East we can support a team and get back in the big time.

Aye, as a supporter of football (soccer) in Australia, I can relate completely.

Channel 7, and indeed the majority of commercial networks, have long shown a complete disregard for anything that isn't AFL.

Incidentally, I might try and make it down on Saturday. It would be good to check out.

Channel 7 sponsors the Eagles and also has the footy rights and will fight for the footy rights next time they are up for bidding. They have a vested interest in making sure that AFL footy is always top dog in this town.

Remeber, Barich played for the Reds to....

Yep. Despite 7's vested interest though, the other networks aren't much better.

I recall Channel 7 buying the broadcast rights to the old NSL (National Soccer League), with no intention of showing the games.

True jay. I remember bumper stickers that come out that said "nobody screws soccer like 7" or something along those lines. And i remember Basil Zemplis showing up to games reporting in the early 2000's acting like he (and 7) actually gave a crrap

Trevor, from my brief reading of these boards you seem to be quick with an opinion on most topics. Don't get me wrong, this is fine and I have no issue. It would be nice, however, for you to consider your opinion first.

I'm accutely aware that Barich played for the Reds. Not that well I might add. My issue is not that anything was mentioned about the Reds, the issue to which I take exception is the comment he chose to make.

Channel 7 like to hold themselves up to be "Perth's network". As such, you would THINK they'd do everything possible to support a new side, regardless of the sport. With Barich's ridiculous off-hand remark (clearly a personal opinion) it only serves to harm the ability to grow a supporter base. He'd have done better to have not mentioned it at all!

If channel 7 are serious about their role as being a leader in the community, they should pull their fingers out and get behind both the Glory and the Reds and pressure the government to get Members Equity to the point of being a top-class venue. They've said it will be the rectangular sports stadium so lets see them turn it into a show piece.

zacbrentnall i may be quick to pass opinion but considering ive posted 5 comments on here in 5 months, im not really sure what drives your assumptions. I was actually agreeing with every word you said. Im no fan of Channel 7 and was a huge supporters of the Reds when they were in the ARL/Super league. Admittingly, i havent really been following their Jim Beam cup campaign.

Not bad for a guy who actually tried out for the real Reds and didn't cut it.
