water Temperature help Reply to this message
Hi all I need advice I have a gas hot water system. The problem is I have a safety system where the water can never get hot enough to burn you but its never warm enough to wash up in or shower in winter. I have to run the water for so long just to get warm water or boil a kettle to wash up in. I find this to be a waste of water and electrics. I have been told it will make no difference if I turn the gas up as it will never get hotter and I will just waste gas. I am so frustrated but Alinta gas tell me there is nothing I can do as it is the law. I would appreciate any advice

ou have regulator on burner itself - if you give name and model - i will be able to give you instructions how to increase water temperature.

if you have bi-metalic cut-off valve installed on the tap itself (not on the unit) you need to purchase new strip with hiigher cut-off setup.

first model of your heater pls...

by the way - do you have your hot water pipes insulated? easy check, are they in something soft or just visible copper pipes?

Hi Bulldoost Thank you for your offer of help
The make is DUX proflo model 135FNG. I have it set to High but it isn't warm enough its just above luke warm as I said its not bad in summer but now winter is here its a joke. I was told when I had this replaced that there is nothing to be done even if I changed to an electric water heater or solar

Re:water Temperature help Reply to this message
i would suggest another tradesman...

now, in dux, in your particular model they installed automatic temperature cut off valve. this need to be changed as seem as yours is stuck on lower level... there are some methods to regulate that, but if you do not know what you do - better if you ask someone to help you with... i am not in perth and i cannot help you...

first anyway, if unit is still under warranty - try dux on 1300 365 115...

check what they say - if water is cold even in summer - it is most probably wrong setting on cut-off valve. and i will still suggest installation of insulation on hot water system, per leght they cost not more than a dollar, but save over the life of the system fortune!

Hi Bulldoost
Thank you for your advice. I had the DUX replaced 2 yrs ago. The water is fine in summer except when I have to wash up greasy dishes it just isn't hot enough but now the colder weather is here it's just not really warm enough to shower with
This hasn't only happened with the new DUX the old one was just the same. I have been told its a safety issue for new houses, this house is only about 7 yrs old. I think this is wrong as I have to pay for gas hot water but still have to boil a kettle to wash up and to shower is a joke.
Thank you for trying to help me I will have another go at Alinta gas

if you have it only 2 years, if they did not change po;icy - unit have 5 years warranty and threfore you maybe have that service for free! just give them call and tell them that water is cold even in summer and in winter there is no heating at all and ask for they technician to come and inspect the unit!

Re:water Temperature help Reply to this message
Hi Bulldoost I rang Alinta gas They are sending someone out tomorrow afternoon to check it out for me as they say the safety thing is in my house not the DUX so hopefully I will get something sorted but its going to cost me $90 so I wonder if I will have to pay extra to get the job done. I will keep you informed Thanks for your advice

Re:water Temperature help Reply to this message
a.exeter - check for small brass "thingy" on the pipe from boiler towards your home... that will be your cut off valve. it most probably need replacing (in case of my home or my children homes - we removed them and do not have them at all...), if this is your home, you can actually have it removed. if you are renting - bit more difficult - ask the owner.

Re:water Temperature help Reply to this message
Hi bulldoost, This is my house. If it is that easy I wonder why the plumber thats fitted the new DUX didn't sort it out for me. I did explain that my water was cold all the time. I also asked if I would be better of with an electric water heater and was told it would make no difference. I will be hoping mad if it is that easy after putting up with this for 6 years.
Plumber due between 12 and 4 so will keep you informed. Thanks

Re:water Temperature help Reply to this message
gas is cheaper in exploatation, now, if you have money to burn - do not buy solar, go to any solar heater company and ask them for 2nd hand one! 3panels will cost about $400.00 to $700.00 plus installation about $400.00 consider that where new one is aobut $7000.00 and you will see the difference...

now, remove thermal valve and you will have much better water flow... and hotter water as well...

sorry, but last few days i have only small window on the evening when i can answer...

Re:water Temperature help Reply to this message
Hi bulldoost Well I have hot water at last. Your are right in what you said it was the thing connected from the heater to the house. I have had it replaced and set to higher. The plumber said it was illegal for him to remove it but I am happy, had a lovely hot shower. The down side it cost me $381
Wish I had known this a few years ago
Thanks for your help

You have been robbed blind and this is very unfortunate.
I read your other thread about the dishwasher plus this heater problem and I cannot believe whats happened its a clear case of being taken advantage of.

The heater problem should have cost no more than $150 just like bulldoost said and the dishwasher about the same if not less.

I had my electric hotplates changed to gas and all I needed was the plumber to fit the gas pipe and regulator.Copper pipe isn't cheap and it took nearly 3 mtrs of it plus the plumber had to shape it to fit down the wall cavity and solder it all up,it took him an hour to do the job plus check for leaks and it cost me $220 in total. All this was done by a local plumber in Mandurah.

Re:water Temperature help Reply to this message
Hi I rang Reece Co to ask the price of the tempering valve I needed and it seems the plumber was right they cost between $159 and $200 I wanted to check to see if I was being over charged for the part but it looks like it was correct. I at least now have hot water just wish I had contacted Alinta gas years ago instead of just excepting luke warm water for 6 yrs
