I was watching a story on Today Tonight last night, not normally a reliable source of current affairs, but there was an interesting story about a school in QLD where the teachers are telling kids and parents that the only thing they can have in there lunch boxes is sandwiches, fruit and milk.
Now, the teachers are confiscating lunches that dont fit this. This i dont agree with. But banning chocolate bars and soft drink and biscuits is a genius idea and i think long overdue in schools. Im all for it. |

| I agree with you. I think there is a more tactful way to go about introducing healthy eating but its so good. Get rid of canteens and rubbish in the lunches.. teach the kids how to eat properly or have a kind of MYO canteen.. kids make there own pizzas, stuffed potatoes, wraps sandwiches and salad rolls. |

| Teachers are probaly sick and tired of seeing fat kids and kids having to bring packaged craap to school to eat. So the school has taken it upon themselves to make sure the kids are getting proper food. I went to primary school in the 80's and back then we were allowed to bring chocolate bars or soft drink either. And our parents didnt biiitch about it. |

kids need to learn good eating habits at an early age. they need to be taught about the benefits of healthy eating so they can make their own informed choices.
get in early, teach them good habits they can take into adulthood and they wont end up living off energy drinks and chocolate muf fins! |

| Teachers have taken over the role of parents at schools because parents have become lazy and irresponsible. More power to them. |

woot, someone sends there child to school with chocolate muesli bars...
Im not talking about parents in general sophiemily dear, but your kidding your self if you think that parents today are doing the right thing by their children in regards to healthy eating. But you dont need to ask me. Just look at the figures on the child obesity epidemic in Australia. Or go to the park and watch the little tubbies try to gwet down the slide. |

I am a parent sophieemily. I have a 6 yr old in year one. Maybe i dont sound like a parent because i think its a bad idea to send kids to school with crrapp lunches consisting of chocolate bars and soft drinks. If supporting healthy eating habits for kids makes a do gooder then so be it. So the question is are you a parent? And if so how fat are your kids?
I did say that i didnt agree with taking childrens lunch off them. Or did you skip over that bit? I just said i agree with the idea of certain foods being banned from a childs lunchbox. |

| sophie, some parents send their kids to school with no breakfast and c r a p lunches. The children cannot learn, and cause trouble in the classroom. More power to the teachers. Some parents have forsaken their right to decide what they send to school with their kids. |

In WA my mother has been serving lunches at one of the High School Terrorist Training camps for years and years. It is amazing what they are permitted and not permitted to sell in comparison to other schools in the same region.
For example the school she works at is not allowed to sell a certain product by the Ed Dept yet others in the region are. The Ed Dept maintains that the kids at that school but not the others in the area will have bad diets at home. Considering other schools in the same area are also little other than prison camps I fail to see how this reasoning eventuated.
This is not about teachers v parents its about what the Ed Dept will allow the school canteens to serve.
Biggest laugh is if the kids do not get what they want they just eff of down to Macca's or Chicken Treat anyway! |

| a few years ago my daughter's canteen was closed permanently in an effort to curb poor eating habits. now whats happening is parents are taking fast food such as mc donalds and chicken treat to their children at lunch time. so it hasnt really solved the problem, only shifted it. when the canteen was in operation i allowed my daughter to order once a week, as i did when i was at school. everything in moderation. |

why the hell would a parent do that and why the hell should people be allowed to leave school during school hours?
If we were caught outside of the school grounds between 8 - 3.30 without a parnets note or teachers note wed be put on detention straight away... Ive never understoood the need for people to leave school grounds at lunch time.. |

Screw moderation. Kids are only at school 5 days a week in 4 x 10 week lots over a 52 week year. Is it really that hard to pack them a healthy lunch for those days? |

BEHIND EVERY LAZY FAT OBESE CHILD THERE IS USUALLY A LAZY MOTHER THAT CAN'T BE BOTHERED COOKING HEALTHY MEALS AND PACKING HEALTHY LUNCHES.
IT'S EASIER TO GIVE THEM LUNCH MONEY AND BUY FAST FOOD THAN TAKE TIME OFF THE SOAPIES OR THE GOSSIP COFFEE CLUBS TO MAKE HEALTHY MEALS.
IN THE YEARS I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN SCHOOLS I HAVE FOUND THAT THE KIDS THAT COME FROM WORKING HOMES, EITHER ONE OR BOTH PARENTS WORKING SEEM TO BE THE MOST ORG *** ED.
THESE KIDS VERY RARELY PUT IN LUNCH ORDERS, ALWAYS SEEM TO HAVE HOME BAKED SLICES ,HEALTHY WRAPS OR SANDWICHES FRUIT AND HOME MADE CARROT CAKE ETC.
THE KIDS FROM THE LESS PRIVILAGED SIDE OF THINGS PARENT/OR PARENTS ON CENTRE LINK ARE IN THE MAIN THE OVERWEIGHT KIDS WHO ORDER LUNCH SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK AND USUALLY COME TO SCHOOL WITH OUT BREAKFAST.
IN QUIZ TIME WE FIND THE SAME RESULTS, TO A VARIED AND NUMEROUS QUESTION TIME THE ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ARE SIMPLY AMAZING.
DO YOU MAKE YOUR OWN BREAKFAST,?WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU GET HOME FROM SCHOOL?, WHAT'S MUM OR DAD USUALLY DOING WHEN YOU GET HOME FROM SCHOOL,? WHO REMEMBERS WHAT YOU HAD FOR TEA LAST NIGHT,? WHAT WAS ON TV WHEN YOU HAD YOUR TEA LAST NIGHT, DO YOU HAVE YOUR SHOWER OR BATH BEFORE YOU GO TO BED OR IN THE MORNING?DOES MUM OR DAD LET YOU GO ON THE INTERNET ON YOUR OWN? DO YOU PLAY ON YOUR PLAY STATION EVERY NIGHT, SOME NIGHTS OR ONLY WEEKENDS, DO YOU HAVE A TIME YOU HAVE TO GO TO BED OR DOES MUM LET YOU DECIDE WHEN TO GO TO BED. PLUS MANY OTHER STRUCTURED QUESTIONS ASKED IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.
THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS FROM 5 YEAR OLDS TO 10 YEAR OLDS IN MIND BLOWING.
SOME KIDS APPEAR TO EAT FAST FOOD SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK FROM ANYTHING FROM 7.00PM TILL 10.30PM A NIGHT, ANSWERS LIKE MUM AND DAD ARE USULLY HAVING A "PIPE" WHEN I GET HOME, 5 & 6 YEAR OLDS THAT WATCH UNDERBELLY!!CHAIN SAW MASSACRE ETC OR I PLAYED GAME BOY TILL 1.00 O' *** IN THE MORNING OR I SAT UP WITH DAD AND WATCHED THE CRICKET MOST OF THE NIGHT AND SLEPT ON THE SOFA, |

DARLING KIDS DON'T HAVE AN INCOME AND DON'T DRIVE CARS IT'S TIME PARENTS WENT BACK TO SCHOOL AND LEARNT HOW TO COOK HEALTHY MEALS AND THAT THE STOVE ISN'T THE CLEANEST THING IN THE KITCHEN BECAUSE IT NEVER GETS USED.
NO GOOD TEACHING KIDS ABOUT HEALTHY EATING HABITS WHEN MUM AND DAD THROUGH LAZINESS OR CONVENIENCE LIVE ON TAKE AWAY AND LET KIDS BUY LUNCH EVERY DAY.
STRANGELY ENOUGH I FIND THE PEOPLE WHO CAN LEAST AFFORD IT AND HAVE THE MOST SPARE TIME ARE THE ONES THAT DON'T BOTHER TO COOK MEALS NIGHTLY OR BOTHER TO PACK THEIR KIDS HEALTHY LUNCHES. |

Can just see it now - the teachers (because of some ridiculous ruling) will have to spend their mornings searching the lunchboxes confiscating anything remotely tasty and interesting instead of teaching the little luvvies the three Rs.
Then off to morning they go to devour a pack of Tim Tams. |

| Teachers are adults and therefore get to make there only lifestyle choices and that includes what they eat. School children, in particular primary school children, are forced to eat the shiite their lazy parents give them. |

Prove me wrong but I think the percentage of parents that feed their children only rubbish would not be that high.
Think back to when what you ate wasn't such an issue.
Im sure like myself many or most had a lunch that would be totally frowned upon these days.
But also think back and ask yourself how many fat kids did you actually have in your class when you were at school?? Going back 30+ years and I could probably name 2 maybe 3 out of a couple of hundred.
Difference is I believe now is the children are not active enough. Most dont walk to school, most are unable to play in the park after school, many in the city dont even have a tree to hang in and climb in their backyard.
Putting ridiculous regulations as to what they can and can't eat and making the poor old teacher responsible for enforcing it is not the answer. Neither is blaming and making out the parent to be irresponsible in every case. |

Theres a child obesity epidemic in this country and you kidding yourself bnb6154 if you think there isnt. Kids are getting fatter and the problem isnt getting its getting worse. I remeber eating sandwiches and muesli bars and the like but i never remeber kids eating chocolate bars and drinking soft drinks for lunch. And the amount of kids eating potota chips was small. And my muesli bars werent chocolate coated.
Theres always been fat kids in school but the difference is now is there also more obese kids. And nutrioninsts and dieticians will tell you that a good diet consists of healthy food and plenty of exercise. Not just plenty of exercise. HEALTHY FOOD.
The school that i based this topic on ,took it upon themselves to enforce there strict school lunchbox policy. Its not a governemnet regulation. They did it off their own backs, primarily i guess because they are sick of seeing their poor students fed rubbish but LAZY AND IRRESPONSIBLE PARENTS. |
