Speeding Fine Reply to this message
I am sooo frustrated. My son got a speeding fine (he doesn't dispute this) BUT he was fined double demerits with 14 1/2 hours until it started!!! I have called the police force who said that double demerits start midnight 24/4 - he was fined 9.30am 24/4!!! They have informed me that I have to call my local police station - I did, twice... both times the phone rang out (so pleased I didn't need them urgently), I also emailed them with no response (doesn't surprise me). I am concerned with the amount of people that may have been fined double demerits without realising that it wasn't in force yet - and whether it is ONE police officer that has decided to take his power a little too far.. My next course of action is to front up to the police station, and hopefully they will reduce the fine - if not.. I will take it further as it is just NOT RIGHT!!! Let me know what you think.

Re:Speeding Fine Reply to this message
If it's your sons fine.... why isnt HE the one running around making phone calls and sending emails???

Sounds like hes a spoilt little mummy's boy.

If you're sooo "frustrated", maybe it should be at your son for getting the fine in the first place or at yourself for being silly enough to run around after him!

Re:Speeding Fine Reply to this message
Midnight 24/4 and 9.30am 24/4 are 9 1/2 hours apart he was in the double demerit time slot. It should be clearer and say categorically the double demerits are 12.01am 24/4 to 11.59pm 27/4 then no one can be excused for gettin it wrong.

He can go to court if he wants to fight.

That said can't do the fine don't do the crime.

OMG..... someone missed out on some loving!!!!

I am doing the run around coz he aint here this weekend - and what is the harm in helping someone anyway?? My choice.

His responsibility for getting the fine, no point me being frustrated at THAT...... and I can't see how a few phone calls is "running around"... GET A LIFE.

Re:Speeding Fine Reply to this message
I can't believe how many petty people post here...... YES... I am now aware that double demerits started one day earlier than normal...even IF all the news channels said that is started midnight Thursday - NOT midnight Wednesday! If double demerits started at midnight Thursday (like we were all led to believe) then NO he wouldn't have been in the 'time slot'.....

Re:Speeding Fine Reply to this message
Depends on your definition doesn't it. Midnight does not really actually exist there is no 2400 or 0000. Its arguable that midnight Thursday is 12.01am Thursday.

Not many of us would see it like that but I guarantee the fuzz, for the sake of this argument, will. The counter is to ask them what midnight their pay goes in their banks.

Like I said there is the court option.

The best defence is to actually ask the policeman at the time for the gazettal stating the speed limit and the double demerit points time zone and its worth pursuing with the ministry or Department of Premier and Cabinet to see exactly what the Gazettal says. No gazettal no law.

jatili... ignore the fools on this board... you are quite right in what you stated and I feel it is a clear clerical error and that it should get fixed BEFORE it goes to court

As for being unable to contact someone who cares... LOL I think most of us have been in that club :)

You are right in objecting to the double demerits. Go into your local police station with the fine and Im sure they will see an error has occurred.
And well done on taking the time and looking out for your sons welfare.

Re:Speeding Fine Reply to this message
SAOS there actually is no 0000 or 2400 or 1200 pm. Midday is fine it is 1200 in every method.

Therefore midnight Thursday could be 0001 or 12.01am Thursday or 2359 or 11.59pm Thursday.

The best defence is to find the gazettal.

========================= ==

WRONG.

Midnight or zero-hundred hours (00:00:00) does exist and occurs at the START of every day. The morning runs from 00:00:00 (midnight) to 11:59:59. Afternoon begins at 12:00:00 (noon) and runs until 23:59:59, when the day ends. There is no 24:00.

The confusion arises because under the 12-hour clock the sections of the day start at 12:00 and finish at 11:59 - clearly counter-intuitive. In a legal sense, however, "midnight Thursday" means "00:00 Thursday", which is clearly before "09:30 Thursday".

Don't waste your time and more money pursuing it through the courts. From what you've said here, the fine was issued correctly.

Re:Speeding Fine Reply to this message
It could be argued that midnight Thursday is 1 minute after 1159pm Wednesday 'cos after midnight, Wednesday becomes Thursday.

Also, I agree that you shouldn't be running around after your son. If it caused a bit more hassle and inconvenience to him he might learn something and not do it again. You're doing him no favours.

Re:Speeding Fine Reply to this message
LOL ticky and anna-gotta agree.

love those people who ring up radio statiosn and complain about speed cameras being revenue raising machines.
Good way not to support them!

As to the double demerits-in 36 years of driving ;I have never gotten one-not even a single demerit-nor has my husband.

Well, I lie ;I copped one for my daughter; just after she got her licence ;as she wasnt sure ,if by going 10 ks over the limit ,on the way up here ;she might lose her P licence ;so I said I was driving and copped it on mine.

Taught her a lesson-she hasn't had one since.
