Mining jobs for women Reply to this message
I've been hearing a lot about girls driving trucks in the mining industry. North/WA. I'm interested, I can drive anything and do other jobs too eg admin. What options, locations, companies can anyone advise me about? I also heard they are making 100K is that true?

Re:Mining jobs for women Reply to this message
Yep thats true if you are interested put in a application with companies like miningpeople or extra-man or contracting companies like Barminco, Roche or Brynecut. They are some of the companies you can apply to but be prepared for 2 weeks on 1 week off and shift work. To get that type of money you have to apply for a job in the Iron Ore mines in the Pilbara its very difficult to get a job as they are popular. Your main problem is going to be your lack of experiance.

Re:Mining jobs for women Reply to this message
They make 100k because they work 12 hour shifts, work two weeks on/one off. Some are four on/one off. Four weeks straight is hard yakka. All you do is work and sleep.

The money is related to the hours. $22-28 hr seems to be the average rate. Not bad for just sitting on your bum avoiding potholes and carting rocks around all day.

It's hard to get anything from a distance. Get the West Australian and Kalgoorlie Miner sent to you that's where the jobs are advertised, both are online now.

Though they are short of workers, you still can't just walk off the street and get a job driving a dumpie.
KCGM have a waiting list and will train, as do BHP at the Nickel smelter.

You have to be reasonably fit and healthy, have and MC or HR drivers licence, pass a medical, drug and alcohol screening test, and MARCSTA would be handy. As it's one less thing for them to put you through.
Nobody ever fails their MARCSTA, it's a doddle.
The more "other" skills/qualifications you have too, the better. Senior first aid, time management etc etc.
Drivers are thick on the ground, but geologists, electricians, diesel fitters and other tradespeople are definitely in demand.
Good luck to all of you. It's a hard life and hot work.
Can't say I've heard of anyone getting flown home to visit family or anything like that though.

Re:Mining jobs for women Reply to this message
Know of many women that started off in support services - mess, cleaning etc that ended up driving the machinery.

I think in most of their cases it was from meeting the right people and being in the right place when the jobs became available.

Re:Mining jobs for women Reply to this message
Isn't it amazing - you keep hearing about the huge shortage of workers but when you apply they want people with years of experience. Can't be too hard to find workers can it?

Re:Mining jobs for women Reply to this message
part of the reason they want experience is that it pretty hard up there living away fro your family a lot of people last a week before they get homesick and quit. So if you have experience it shows the company that you will stick it out.

hi aleisha.
my partner and i are wanting to do the induction too. we were told by my neighbor that sarina russo in brisbane city does it! he currently works in one of the mines south of Mt Isa. he gets $1400 in the hand every week. 2 weeks on 1 off. he gets paid even for the week he's off, and it's fly in - fly out as well....maybe we'll see you one day!.

Re:Mining jobs for women Reply to this message
Oh no I was afraid of that!!!!
My mum has gone over there yesterday from the east coast, she will be going to kalgoorlie tomorrow to apply to the recruitment companies and I am so afraid it has been a waste of time and money for her.

She is a nurse, security guard, truck/ bus driver and has had a HR licence(for 20years).

The recruitment companies seem to be ignoring her!!!!!!!

She has worked in SA in the Woomera Detention Centre for months at a time - She can handle being away!!!!! I hope the recruitment companies give her a shot!

Re:Mining jobs for women Reply to this message
The best way of getting on the WA mines with no experience is thru the hospitality sector. ESS which is a sub branch of compass have FIFO hospitality postions advertised frequently. The positions are for Cheifs, Cleaners, Kitchen hands , Bus drivers etc. Apply via compass-group.com.au .Be prepared for starting wages of $55 2 weeks on 1 off however once your in its easier to get on to other sites that are paying better. How do I know? I did it. I'm a female from QLD started with compass moved to Morris and now 12 months later drive dump trucks for Macca. You have to start at the bottom & meet contacts on site. Getting a traineeship on dump trucks is as likely as winning the lotto ... it does happen but not 4 most of us
