'Popeye' Doyle's Show-Bags

Melbourne residents are being urged to have a bag of essential items - including a torch, soup and tissues - prepared in case of evacuation.

Releasing a new CBD emergency plan today, Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said carrying a Go Bag made sense for workers and visitors to the city.

The new plan, to be sent out to the CBD's 20,000 residents and available on the City of Melbourne's website, includes mass evacuation to sites such as Etihad Stadium, the MCG and Exhibition Building in times of emergency.

Emergencies could range from earthquakes and terrorist attacks to floods or the heatwave experienced in Melbourne earlier this year.

Cr Doyle said he had a Go Bag already packed. "My first priority is to make sure people in the city are safe and they are prepared for any emergency or natural disaster," he said.

Items people should consider putting in their Go Bag include a small radio, torch, soup, basic first aid, any personal medicine, bottle of water, muesli bar, pack of batteries, jellybeans and tissues, the council said.

This failed, State Liberal, ex-Opposition Leader has turned the Shire of Melbourne in to a laughing stock from the day he took the office of Lord Mayor of Melbourne

Re:Doyle's First Act as New Mayor Reply to this message
MELBOURNE City Council has spent about $240,000 developing a new brand.

The new "City of Melbourne" design will be phased in slowly to reduce ongoing costs of replacing the previous logo.

The Melbourne branch of multinational company Landor created the brand, which has a prominent "M" made up of what looks like shards of glass, with a bold City of Melbourne print beneath.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the cost was worth it for a recognisable and internationally-renowned brand that would reduce confusion and create a stronger symbol for Melbourne.

He said the council was spending about $90,000 a year on other logos that represented City of Melbourne groups, so Melburnians would save money in the long term.

Cr Doyle said the previous logo was made when he listened to Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer and it was vital for Melbourne's economic prosperity to have a strong and innovative brand.

NSW Premier Nathan Rees is adamant he hasn't picked the wrong flower.

Mr Rees has rejected opposition claims the state's new stylised logo is actually a lotus, the national flower of India, rather than the waratah, the state's floral emblem.

"As a horticulturist I know a waratah when I see one," Mr Rees said in a statement.

"I'm proud to promote awareness of the waratah and I'll continue to do so."

The new logo, which the government has used for the past few months, was designed externally for NSW, costing the Department of Commerce $4,600.

MELBOURNE City Council and police have cracked down on cyclists who ride through city parks. More than 100 have been fined $250 each.

The council said its warnings to cyclists not to ride through parks such as Carlton Gardens had been ignored for too long.

In a move that angered cyclists, council park rangers combined with the police bicycle patrol to nab cyclists riding through gardens last week.

http://www.theage.com.au/national/250-fine-for-cyc ling-on-the-path-20090916-frof.html

By teaming with the police, council rangers - who do not have the power to detain cyclists - were able to hand out fines totalling more than $25,000 to 110 cyclists.

Among the cyclists nabbed was landscape architect Alistair Wenn, who received his fine while riding through the Carlton Gardens. Earlier in the day, his wife, Jackie, was also fined for riding through the gardens.

''On one hand you have a council saying they encourage cycling and on the other you are fined $250 if you ride through a park,'' said an angry Mr Wenn, who argued the garden's 5.5-metre footpaths could be easily shared. ''The alternative is to ride on the footpath, which would be much worse.'' Riding on the footpath attracts a fine of $58.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle backed the fines. He said the council had clear rules on where people could ride

The council bans bicycles from the Fitzroy, Carlton, Treasury and Flagstaff gardens, and most of Fawkner Park. Cycling is allowed in the council's other parks.

The council was unable to provide evidence that pedestrians in the city's parks were being endangered by cyclists

By teaming with the police, council rangers - who do not have the power to detain cyclists - were able to hand out fines totalling more than $25,000 to 110 cyclists.

There sensible thing here, would be to use the cash windfall to put in lines dividing the 5m paths into designated zones

But that'd be too logical for 'Popeye'

Re:Doyle's First Act as New Mayor Reply to this message
'Melbourne City Council is the ONLY inner-city council to ban cyclists from riding through its gardens'

A MELBOURNE City councillor will move to review the council's policy of fining riders who cycle through city parks $250.

Greens councillor Cathy Oke said there should be safe bicycle commuter routes created through city parks and gardens, and will put forward a motion to that effect at a committee meeting.

Council rangers and police last week combined to hand out $250 fines to 110 cyclists for riding through a council park, raising more than $25,000.

''It is regrettable we are fining cyclists,'' Cr Oke said yesterday. ''There should be safe commuter bike paths through key parks in Melbourne.''

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has defended the fines, saying there should be certain parks and gardens that are off-limits to cyclists.

Cyclists have reacted angrily to the severity of the fines - similar offences, such as riding on the footpath, attract a penalty of $58.

Cycle groups have begun organising a protest against the fines, with renegade bicycle group Critical Mass yesterday discussing a ride through the city's gardens next Friday, September 25.

A viral email campaign lampooning Melbourne's ban by comparing it to other cycling cities is also circulating.

Melbourne City Council is the only inner-city council to ban cyclists from riding through its gardens.

Calls yesterday to Yarra, Moreland, Maribyrnong, Port Phillip and Stonnington councils confirmed that they allow cyclists to ride through their parks.

Good maybe we can set an example for the others , we are talking of a minority of selfish ones that do this , the same ones usually ride on the footpaths barely dodging peds ... I think councils & govts have done the right thing by cyclists & have spent a fair amount of tax & ratepayer funds building these designated bike lanes also the Yarra boulevard allows peds & cyclists & works well , why can't peds be allowed to walk through parks without running the gauntlet of selfish cyclists .
Maybe the Peds should walk in the designated Cycle lanes & see the reaction then !

Because a small percentage of cowboys spoil it for the 95% of cyclists that do the right thing & don't ride in the cities parks.
We will have to agree to disagree as I walk to & from home through the parks & enjoy the solitude , maybe then the peds can walk in the bike lanes

Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen
November 02, 2009

ROBERT Doyle pledged to ban junkets, but will spend $61,000 of ratepayers' cash to attend a climate change forum.

Before he was elected Cr Doyle said he would ban junkets, but he denied this trip would be classified as a "junket".

One hundred lord mayors from around the world were invited to Copenhagen by the Danish capital's Lord Mayor.

You could say the same for Biggles Rudd or the Govenor general who spent $600.000 on a handshaking excersize , Melbourne is a major world city maybe he can pick up something relevant , perhaps Lynn Kosky should have done a similiar thing instead on the Myki fiasco costing 1.35 Billion $$ of taxpayers money , they could have had the successful Japanese & Hong Honk ticketing system for $450 million a massive saving on Vic taxpayers...
