Hi,
I currently live in Sydney and am looking at buying a property in Melbourne. My friend had suggested me with Deer Park, Werribe, and Tarneit. Can someone pls tell me which is the better surburb out of these 3? |

Hi Jenn
I think Tarneit would be the better of the three. I know all of these suburbs. Tarneit has newer housing estates and a nice feel about it if you like that sort of thing. Werribee is next door and also good, and you can get older style housing if you like. Deer Park does not really have a good reputation as far as safety goes. There is good housing there though. Cheaper housing can be found in Hoppers Crossing and Laverton (which has improved in it's safety rating and there are some really nice little streets there.) Both are in the vacinity. Deer Park is further away from the others.
If you are patient, you can get some fantastic housing deals on existing homes.
Hope that helps.

| Thanks for your reply. That's really helpful. Would you please also give me some idea regarding distance? Would Werribe or Tarneit be considered as "far away" or distant surburbs from Melbourne city? I've found it hard to relate my sense of distance from map. Many thanks!!!! |

Hi Jenn
Werribee/Tarneit is straight down the Westgate Freeway/Geelong Road, so a pretty smooth run. From the city centre of melbourne, you are probably looking at 40 minutes. They are suburbs on the outskirts of Melbourne in the Western Suburbs. The Western Suburbs are generally more compact than the eastern suburbs. Deer Park is also in the Western suburbs but a little more north. It would take longer to get there because of traffic lights and so forth. (not on a freeway as such). May well be the same distance though.
I have a brother in Werribee and a niece in Tarneit. Werribee still has a country town feel to it, even though it has everything under the sun there.
One thing good about the Western Suburbs is that there are no road tolls, and you can get into the city (Melbourne) without having to pay any. :) *touch wood because they are always talking about introducing them*
I am a Western Suburbs gal if you cannot tell. lol I am closer to the city though.
Hope that helps. Good luck with your search! :) |

Werribee and Tarneit are adjacent to eachother.
Werribee is established, whereas Tarneit is a new estate which will continue to be developed for many years to come.
The entire area comes under the Wydndham City Council.
This council is the fastest growing council in Australia.
Upwards of 1000 new residents move in each week.
Unfortunately, the Victorian Government does not provide sufficient funding to police the area.
As such, crime rates are rising there.
Many African settlers, and Pacific Islanders.
Deer Park is closer to the mountains and wine regions. A higher middle class area than both Werribee and Tarneit. |

So far there have been many threads asking the same questions. How is Deer Park, Tarniet, Truganina, etc. All the new estates. Yet those of us who have had experience with those areas keep saying avoid them at all costs. I'm wondering why people are not listening?
Point Cook is better as it's more expensive... keeps the riff raff out.
The new estates are breeding grounds for the next generation of ferals... establish yourself there at your own risk. |
