MELBOURNE commuters might be ready to bid farewell to train operator Connex, but they could soon find the company running another local transport system. Connex - removed from suburban rail amid complaints of cancellations, overcrowding and breakdowns - has been shortlisted to operate a fleet of bicycles across the city.

The State Government will announce today that French transport giant Veolia, owner of Connex, is in the running for the $5 million project along with American transport consultants Alta Planning and Design. A decision on the two operators, which were shortlisted from four bids, will be made within three months, a spokesperson said. The scheme should be operating by next year.

The successful bidder will establish about 50 stations to house 600 bicycles that commuters can ride free or hire short-term to cut congestion and carbon emissions.

The news follows the Government's decision last month to dump Connex as Melbourne's rail operator from November in favour of Hong Kong operator MTM after years of soaring patronage and declining performance. Connex has repeatedly blamed its poor performance on decades of under-investment by successive governments.

A Connex insider said its intimate knowledge of Melbourne public transport was a distinct advantage in its bicycles bid.

Connex was appointed by the Kennett Government to run Melbourne's rail network on it's 1999 privatisation of services

No it's actually used widely in Paris and other parts of France. It's cheap, easy to use and works fairly well from experience

Same as Vic was a basket case once Kennett and his cohorts got in. Both parties are just as bad as each other
