Has Melbourne lost its coffee soul ? Reply to this message
For some time now I've been running a blog on cafe's in Melbourne. Nothing too serious just a bit of fun.

However, I'm getting increasingly frustrated with the number of cafe's who produce coffee that insults the taste buds of any real coffee lover. Surely, with a little bit of training and pride, it can't be that hard to combine coffee beans and milk to produce something that resembles coffee.

Obviously the vast majority of these coffee makers (I won't insult Barista's by giving them that title), have had no formal training. On the job training is fine providing the trainer has the skills and experience.

Are we doing what we normally do and dumb things down to the lowest common denominator. We seem to have lost our pride in Melbourne's ability to produce top quality coffee and are producing dish water at $3 a cup.

Maybe I've just had a bad run of cafe experiences but don't believe this is the case. Most coffee drinkers go back to a cafe because the coffee is good, not because they have a weird erotic attraction to dish water.

It's time for café owners to take pride in the coffee they produce. Australians are not know for complaining about bad service etc. We just take our custom elsewhere.

You need to try LaMaison cafe on the causeway in Wodonga if you want the best coffee in Australia

Two places I can recommend for awesome coffe. One is the little coffe/video shop beside the bakery in Kinglake.
The other is the "Rose Cafe"/nursery in Kilmore, on the main drag (Nthn Highway). There is a rose nursery outback and a restaurant/cafe in front. Its damn good coffee and the food is pretty good too.

If in Melbourne try the Barista Express in Little Flinders lane towards King Street. Absolutely brilliant and the Barista is a real honey

One of the best I'VE had in Melbourne, of late, is in that 'God-awful bog hole' called Deer Park

It's a continental grocer and wine shop, with a cafe at the back, on Ballarat Rd/Western Hwy

It's Deer Park's ONLY redeeming feature

I love, love, love my coffee but I am struggling to find something decent in the area I work. So much so that I have taken a preference to *gasp* instant.. And not only instant but a middle of the range instant.

Yes, unfortunately the '80s coffee meringues are still lurking around, and too many cafe staff are burning the coffee, or the milk, or just not keeping their coffee fresh.

Watch the "coffee maker" and see if they do the following:

1) Turn on the grinder before filling the basket with coffee, ready for brewing? If so, they are ensuring that your coffee is freshly ground. You can stay and wait for your coffee.

2) Rinse out the group head (where coffee brews) before slotting your basket of freshly ground coffee in? Good- you're not getting a stale coffee taste then.

3) Brew your coffee within 30 seconds of clicking it into the group head? If they leave it clicked in for more than 30 seconds then your coffee can burn, so you may as well ask for a cup of tea instead.

4) Move the milk jug up and down like a yoyo while they're steaming the milk- they are not steaming your coffee to a good consistency. They are making a meringue. Cancel the latte order and opt for a long black instead.

If they follow steps 1 to 3 and make a good, creamy, just right temperature milk, they deserve the title of "barista".

If not, they should stick to making sandwiches.

Avoid the following coffee brands like the plague:

Vittoria
Lavazza
Coffex - seem inconsistent, reflecting lack of training and support for cafes, reflecting on quality.

Any franchise coffee operation or fast food coffee -
they keep overheads low, which is good for them, but then buy rubbish coffee, expecting us to be impressed. I don't think so!

Good coffee brands:
Jasper (fair trade and great quality, consistent bw cafes)
Veneziano (starting to pop up in a few places around inner Melb. Good, strong but smooth coffee, with a nice aftertaste). Served at Jeff's Shed, and used by Coffee HQ at Flinders St Station.
Grinders
Giancarlo (upmarket version of grinders)
Yarra Coffee- in lots of cafes around the Yarra Valley, and you can buy their coffee for at home from their outlet in Lilydale
Eureka- Australian grown and good quality. Brewhouse and cafe in George St, North Fitzroy
Amanti- good, smooth nutty coffee. Have good on-site training for cafe owners, so it's good wherever you go.
Beraldo- similar coffee to Amanti, and seems to be consistent wherever I've had it.
