Doyle's First Act as New Mayor Reply to this message
VICTORIA'S largest animal hospital has been banned from finding new homes for cats and dogs lost in the City of Melbourne, as local pounds brace for a sharp increase in the number of pets dumped over Christmas.

After helping to rehouse abandoned pets for the past 75 years, Lort Smith Animal Hospital has suddenly been ordered by Melbourne City Council to transfer all seized animals to a North Melbourne pound.

A council spokesman said the respected animal hospital had no formal agreement with council and had breached Victoria's Domestic Animals Act.

"The Lort Smith Animal Hospital has now understood the requirements of the act.

"They are now reviewing the animals they had in custody and returning them to respective council pounds in accordance with their legal requirements," the spokesman said.

RSPCA president Hugh Wirth slammed the decision as ridiculous and unnecessarily bureaucratic. He said the situation could have been easily rectified, without the council's heavy-handed response.

Kae Norman, animal advocate and founder of Rescued with Love, criticised the timing of the council order.

"To remove a service that finds homes for lost dogs and cats before Christmas will place enormous strain on other groups attempting to fill the breach," Ms Norman said.

Cripes how bloody stupid can you get. The Lost Dogs Home provide a great service (got two dogs from there over the years). Have to wonder about the intelligence of some of our ministers.

And the next one ?

Angry cyclists will demonstrate outside the Melbourne Town Hall this afternoon, ahead of Lord Mayor Robert Doyle's first steps to push through his contentious plan to return traffic to Swanston Street.

Cr Doyle will tonight support a council motion to consider a "range of options" for the troubled strip, including re-opening it to traffic.

Tonight's council meeting will be the first with Cr Doyle as Lord Mayor.

He has already attracted attention - much of it negative - for his plans to re-introduce traffic to Swanston Street.

But Cr Doyle was unrepentant about his plan when contacted yesterday. "We want the options on Swanston Street," he said.

"We will ask for a full range of options. That would include, for instance ... returning traffic to Swanston Street, how would we do it, (or) if we wanted to go the other way, how would we do it."

A report on all the options for Swanston Street is expected to be brought before the council by March, including costings.

Cr Doyle said he had no plans to backflip on his Swanston Street policy.

"It doesn't work at the moment moving traffic into and out of the city and that's what we need," he said.

Tour buses ordered out of Swanston
Kate Lahey
December 17, 2008
TOUR bus operators have been told to shift from Swanston Street by the end of March as Melbourne's new council starts work on the latest remedy for the city's troubled spine.

Councillors last night voted unanimously to order tour buses out and to have a full report on altering the use of Swanston Street, which is now closed to general car traffic during the day.

Hundreds of cyclists, angry at Lord Mayor Robert Doyle's desire to return cars to the road, rallied outside Melbourne Town Hall before last night's meeting.

Jeremy Rawlins, whose wife Carolyn died when hit by a bus in Swanston Street in September, told the rally he had met Cr Doyle to discuss the issue.

Mr Rawlins told the cyclists they still had a chance to save Swanston Street from cars and that he did not want anyone else to lose a loved one there.

Re:Doyle's First Act as New Mayor Reply to this message
Shouldn't Doyle attend to the more important issues???

Like organising a ticker tape parade for former Toorak socialite P1xie Skase!

She's coming home for good and we owe it to her to welcome her with a parade and a party! And only champagne and caviar to be served to make her feel more at home!

C'mon Doyle - show your support for a true Australian hero!

Lillian Frank is overjoyed with P1xie coming home - so should you!!!

P!xIE Skase is heading home to Melbourne for good, 17 years after fleeing to Spain with her fugitive husband.

Mrs Skase, 67, says the time is right to settle back in Toorak after years of luxurious exile.

"I am so excited to come back home," she said during a Christmas visit to catch up with family ahead of a permanent move in February.

"I walk in Toorak Village and I see old friends and I have to think hard who they are.

Re:Doyle's First Act as New Mayor Reply to this message
buzz - i almost vomited when i read the Herald Sun's front cover story about Skase the other day!

But it got better this weekend with their editor asking us to forgive and allow her a peaceful life - and then Lillian Frank literally telling the victims of Skases actions to eat sh1t!

I am sick and tired of hearing fraudsters claiming that their spouse had nothing to do with the crime - and therefore should not be punished!

P1xie lived the good life while her hubbie bankrupted Quintex and then destroyed the lives of so many investors and employees.

She then p1ssed off to Spain and denounced her Australian citizenship and told us all what she really thought of our country!

Now she asks us to forgive her and welcome her home with open arms! She will just go back to the Toorak social circle as if nothing had happened!

I am betting we will see more pics of P1xie and her socialite snobs in the social pages!

Doyle - instead of a ticker tape parade - how about a one way ticket to Christmas Island!!!

We don't want people like her coming into our country!!!

Re:Doyle's First Act as New Mayor Reply to this message
Melbourne's Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has backed away from his controversial trip to Russia because he is worried it will damage the council's reputation.

- Doyle backs down on Russia trip
- Reconsidering decision to go
- City council reputation at stake

Cr Doyle told Radio 3AW he would not go to St Petersburg if it would harm Melbourne City Council.

Town Hall announced the mayor would visit Russia to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its sister city relationship with Melbourne last month, despite Cr Doyle previously saying council travel junkets should be banned.

Cr Doyle said when he first told about the trip he thought "I'm not going" but changed his mind because commitments had been made.

But he said the "circus" that followed the announcement of his travel plans meant he may perform another backflip.

"I am seriously reconsidering going to St Petersburg as long as Melbourne doesn't suffer," he said.

Cr Doyle said a senior officer from the council would still go in his place if he decided against the journey.

Cr Doyle said taxis would be banned from picking up passengers off the street.

Cr Doyle also suggested flat fares, which would make a trip from Collins St to King St $25

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,27574,251 37882-2862,00.html

Well, this should be good for tourism

As should THIS public statement

"For passengers, I regret to say, it is not safe to hail a taxi from some parts of the city on the street because of drunken and drug-affected louts," Cr Doyle said.

But it's a fact , my 25 YO nephiew refuses to go into the CBD at night because of the ongoing violence , we shouldn't have to run the gauntlet of agressive drunks , Drug Dealing & violence in our own city, good on him.
I don't care what his political allegiances are , the flat fare idea was to encourage Taxi drivers into the city , because at the moment many won't go , the flat fares was (as mentioned on 774 ) was to cover up to 10 KM limit ..
What is you solution..?

Who wants to wait in a taxi rank full of drunks?

You'd only have to look at one of them & they'd say:
"What are you looking at @@@@ "

Next thing you'd be in either the police station
or the hospital.

Best bet is actually - just don't go to the city
at night - it's too dangerous.

So instead of opting for the safety of the first cab you can hail down, the better option is to 'run the gauntlet' through all the 'drunken and drug-affected louts' looking for a taxi rank ?

IN THE 100 days since becoming only the second directly elected lord mayor in Melbourne's history, Robert Doyle has generated publicity for some ambitious policy ideas.

But it is events happening behind closed doors at the Melbourne Town Hall that have some worried.

Last week the council held a closed meeting to discuss how it would spend its share of the Federal Government's $550 million community infrastructure fund.

The council voted eight to one to seek $25 million for the upgrade of council offices

Re:Doyle's First Act as New Mayor Reply to this message
Get off the grass, Robert Doyle
Wendy Hargreaves
March 29, 2009

I DARE the over-zealous Melbourne Council rangers to drag me off my local park.

Go on, all you green-shirted bureaucrats. I'll be there this weekend with my young children kicking the footy. You can't miss us.

We'll be among the many families enjoying kick-to-kick, throwing frisbees, playing chasey and generally mucking around on the sprawling grass of Princes Park.

It's our local park. It's Carlton North's biggest public space. But now we're banned from our playing fields. We're wrecking the turf, apparently.

Rangers can drive their shiny four-wheel-drive utes on the grass -- see the tyre marks -- but my four-year-old can't kick her footy.

And we're not just talking about the sports ovals. Rangers are moving people on from the open areas next to the ovals -- the same grass used for the Big Day Out.

Have you heard anything more ridiculous? Well, you haven't heard anything yet.

When I asked City Hall why people could no longer enjoy kick-to-kick at their local park I received this email attributed to Lord Mayor Robert Doyle: "They are partaking in casual sports and due to the impact of the drought, all City of Melbourne sports grounds are currently closed for casual events and casual sports."

What a load of rubbish.

I wonder if Cr Doyle cast his eyes over the statement before his media minder emailed it to me. For Cr Doyle's sake, I hope he didn't. At least then he has an excuse for sounding so ridiculous.

Families heading to their local park for some exercise -- as directed by our get-fit-and-active council -- can't run around on the grass.

Groups of mates getting together after work to kick the footy? Banned.

If Cr Doyle had been to Princes Park recently he would see the grass is green -- almost lush after recent rains.

We want to kick the footy on our local sports grounds, so what do we do, Mr Mayor?
