Melbourne Taxi Industy - be careful! Reply to this message
I know that many people have expressed their dissatisfication with the taxi service in Melbourne. I just wanted to make it clear that rude, impatient, or lost cab drivers should be the least of your worries.

I was travelling in Melbourne a few months ago and took a cab from my hotel to Tullamarine Airport. The cabbie said the electronic payment system was down and used a manual swipe machine to take our credit card info. When we reviewed our credit card statement there was a mysterious charge 2 weeks after we had left Melbourne, for a 'limo' ride in north Melbourne. I googled "melbourne taxi fraud" and found out that MANY people have had similar problems. The transaction comes up as:

CAB ACCOUNT AUST BRUNSWICK AU or
ARDEN TAXIS LIMO NTH MELBOURNE

The amounts have been anywhere from $20 to $190 - small for one transaction but certainly adds up after dozens of people get ripped off. One lady said the day after she used her card to pay for a cab ride in Melbourne over $16,000 was frauduently charged to her card!

The moral of the story: keep your receipts and check your credit card statements after using your credit card in a Melbourne cab.

If something like this has happened to you, please report it to the Taxi Directorate (even though they told me it was not their problem) and anyone else you can think of (police, member of parliament, etc). The more noise people make about this scam, the more likely something will actually happen to correct it. Right now no one seems to care that dozens (probably hundreds) of people are getting ripped off by crooks disguised as cab drivers.

Very interesting to read your notice. Thanks for putting it up. I have just disputed a transaction on my statement as of today exactly for ARDEN TAXIS LIMITED NORTH MELBOURNE. Now I'm going to call the bank and transfer the 'dispute' I put in to the Fraud Department. October 2008 and they're still doing it.

Interesting timing. I caught a cab on the 5th of October to the Tullamarine and the fraudulent charge hit my statement on 24th for $44.60. It's as if they waited about two and a weeks later to put their bogus transactions through. Make sure that you get your credit cards stopped and new ones issued by your bank which is a pain but security really. I hope they get them BIG TIME!

I've just noticed the same thing from "WAVERLEY TAXI BROKER" "ALEX TAXIS BROKER".
They wait a week or so before putting the charge through.
Never let the scum bags use the "click clack" to process your credit card. Insist on the eftpos machine or cash.
Still waiting to here from the disputes department of Commbank.

To a cab to the airport last Sunday and the guy stank. To make matters worse he didn't even know how to get to the airport. Spent all week in Sydney traveling by cabs and didn't have one problem. For some reason most of the Sydney drivers seem to be Asian.

Arden are the company that process the card transaction. There is NO fraud unless they have processed it twice or entered multiple amounts> You will find that if this is for one amount then it is for the trip you made. You are liable to pay for tis trip and you will find this out when your bank gets back to you. There are many companies who process the cards and that is why the strange names come up. SIMPLE ANSWER if you made the trip and signed for the docket then pay your bill

I'm glad we aren't the only ones whom had an issue.

My wife about 12 months ago caught a ride home from a night of drinks, the driver stated the EFTPOS did work and she paid for the $19 trip manually with the paper swipe.

She for some reason kept the copy in her purse and when we got our monthly transaction statement from the bank, $29 had been charged to our account by the taxi company.

My wife contacted the bank; ANZ and informed them of the difference, she received a copy of the drivers paper copy, and you could see the 1 had been chaged to a 2, she then sent her original customer receipt to the bank whom compared the 2 and found the driver had chaged the 1 on his copy to a 2 to steal the money from our account.

Morale of the story don't simply throw does receipts away!

That HAS to be a clear cut caseof either :
1) Fraud
2)Theft.
Take your statements DIRECTLY to Police and swear a complaint.
This IS Australia and it cannot be condoned.

Actually, I don't think this is entirely correct. I can't remember travelling in a taxi at all - haven't in over a year. My Citibank statement says that Arden Taxi and Limo.... have taken $49.95.
It has only shown up on my statement once but I haven't takne a taxi so there must be more than one way they are conducting this scam.

I don't think this issue has anything to do with the Nationality or the 'smell' of the taxi drivers. Talking racist rubbish undermines the seriousness of the issue. I wouldn't TRUST anyone with my card now in a taxi. I would rather take the cash out on my card and pay in cash.

You are right Janie this has nothing to do with the colour or the smell of the drivers. People will be dishonest no matter what colour they are or how often they shower !

Simple rule pay cash where you can

Re:Melbourne Taxi Industy - be careful! Reply to this message
I regularily use taxis & a minor scam used is that most drivers try to add a booking fee (even if you hail one from the roadside) it's about $3.50 not a kings ransom though , if challenged most apologise & deduct it & say it was 'accidently' added..

I have never had the misfortune of needing a cab in Melbourne yet!! but I was listening to a certain FM radio station a month ago on the way to Dandenong station and they were talking about indian cabbies ripping us off and not knowing where they were going...also there total lack of english...why the hell do we have to put up with these rude/arrogent tools driving our cabs...maybe if we had REAL aussies or even asians driving them we wouldn't have a problem nor would be getting ripped off everytime we use one to get to the airport of whatever..This sort of thing is why I always go into town on the train and follow onto Tullamarine on Skybus if I have to fly anywhere.

I WOULDN'T TRUST A CABBIE WITH MY LIFE.

theres my 2 cents,

Mitch...

I haven't caught a cab in months, and the last time someone used the manual machine on my card was when I was catching a cab home on New Years...ten months later I check my account and find I've been charged $40 by Arden Taxis Limo nth Melb. I immediately called the bank to get them to dispute the charge and block my card, but after reading this I have also asked for a new card to be issued and on the advice of a friend who works for the police I will be reporting this tomorrow and also complaining to the taxi directorate.
If this happens to anyone else I would strongly urge you take the same measures. I'm only glad it was $40 rather than thousands.

I think the REAL problem with the taxi industry everywhere in Australia is that the earnings of drivers is so ridiculously low that the poor mugs have no option but to resort to naughty tricks merely to survive.
