where to live better west or east suburb Reply to this message
Hi Guys!
I'm moving to melbourne from UK on Feb '09 with my hubby and 2 kids ages 9 and 3. Got a job offer in Malvern but noticed that housing prices there are quite dearing so I haven't accepted the offer yet. Whilst looking at the real estate online west suburb properties are a lot cheaper. So I'm thinking whether to find another job at western suburb or just accept the offer at malvern. Please could somebody tell me which area is better for my family and the best and safe area to raise my kids. Also, where could I find loads of asian shops, restaurants, etc.
Many thanks...

Malvern is nice but expensive as you say.
Re; Asian shops, When in the UK, Asian is mainly seen as Indian/Pakistani while in Australia you mention Asian and chinese/vietnamese is the norm. SO when you say ASAIN food & shops are you referring to sub-continent Indian or far-east Chinese?

There are large Asian communities all around Melbourne. Clayton and Springvale have large Asian communities and lie on the same train line as Malvern. Box Hill is another one but on a different train line. Bridge Rd Richmond has many Asian restaurants too but expensive to live there as very close to the city.
Some people like the West but personally its not for me, WAY too suburban and not very good infrastructure.
If you tell us your budget and we could prob tell you where is a good place to go for the price.

Hi Posh - As already pointed out Malvern is expensive to buy. However, there are a lot of other suburbs around that area which are a bit cheaper. For example Caulfield, Hawthorn, Malvern East, Oakleigh.

Don't worry about finding Asian shops we have more then you can poke a chopstick at.

If you are thinking about going west then Yarraville and Seddon are ok but stay away from Footscray and Sunshine. North Melbourne is central and also nice.

Depends on how you plan to get to work (eg car) but you can get to Malvern from Yarraville in about 45 minutes. Much longer by train.

You might want to consider renting until you get to know your way around and the areas a bit better.

Yup I've been thinking of living at yaraville or to buy a property there eventually but we have to rent first when we arrive there until we get settled..When you say 45 mins by car how's the traffic when crossing CBD? as I will be working on shifts. With response to 'impish' when I said Asian I meant Filipino or chinese as I am a British/Filipino and my budget to rent is around $300-400 p/w in at least 2 bed house or apartment as my hub is gonna be a job hunter when we get there
Thanks guys for finding time answering my queries!

Kumusta ka posh? The issues concerning which areas in which to rent/buy have been disucussed by previous posters so I thought I might be able to assist you with regard to Asian shopping precincts. The main areas in which you will find Asian shops are Springvale (south-eastern suburb), Richmond (inner city) & Footscray (western suburb). There is of course China Town in the middle of Melbourne city.
Many of the Asian stores are operated by Vietnamese & Cambodian people.

There are quite a few Filipino grocery stores around Melbourne - they tend not to be located in the same areas but are spread throughout the suburbs. A search on Google will give the locations of some of them. Unfortunately, Filipino restaurants are few - I know of only one in Springvale. Thai food seems to be more preferred.

The Filipino community here in Melbourne is quite large and there are always activities being arranged. There is an annual Filipino Fiesta which is held at their community centre in Laverton North - western suburb.

Good luck with your resettlement.

Hi Larjorgan! Thanks kabayan for the helpful info. Are you from Melbourne? as you seem to be so familiar with the place..How's the cost of living there? We're moving 'coz I thought it's gonna be a lot cheaper there compared here in London. I've already done a lot of research online and kept comparing the two cities, however, I still need to hear from you guys who live there...We also have a yearly barrio fiesta here in London so I'm glad you've got it there too. Thanks!!

Hi again posh - I am not actually a kabayan pero I have a filipina asawa. hence my knowledge as to things Filipino dito sa Melbourne. I have lived around Melbourne for the greater part of my 50 years as well as Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia.

The cost of living in Melbourne is quite reasonable - particularly if you compare it to Sydney - a lot more expensive!

When you finally decide upon the area in which you will settle in Melbourne, let me know & I will advise as to the nearest Fil-Asian outlets. By the way, which part of the Philippines did your Mum come from?

The suburb of Footscray has a reputation throughout
Melbourne for drug (heroin) related criminal activity and
other crime. It is best avoided at night.

as far as i know, the eastern and western suburbs are two of the most expensive places in melbourne, victoria because they're near the city.

"When you say 45 mins by car how's the traffic when crossing CBD?"

WARNING: when given driving times by Melbourne people, always double them. We are in denial about how bad the traffic is here nowadays. People tend to give you the driving times they remember when they were younger.
