Another Melbourne Housing question Reply to this message
Hello,
Husband and I are moving to Melbourne from the US. I will be studying at Melbourne University. We are looking for a place, 200-300pw, not too far from the university but in as quiet and leafy neighborhood as possible. Some side street somewhere, no clubs, no nightlife necessary. I was looking at eastern suburbs, Carlton, Clifton Hill, Collingwood, maybe Fitzroy. Can you give any recommendations? Or am I looking at the wrong part of town?
Thanks.

For 200-300pw you are DEFINITELY looking at the wrong end of town. Go on domain.com.au or realestate.com.au and search for rental properties in those areas. It's not easy to find a rental property for that price in the outer Melbourne suburbs, let alone in the areas you mention.

Really? I looked on domain and found a bunch that seemed to be in that price range. What do you think of those areas?

Believe me qpaulina42, the photos on some of those listings can be very deceiving, often kept on file at the real estate agents for many years and do not reflect the true condition of the properties.

Please make sure you inspect if possible before you commit!

Real estate agents are very crafty and are taught how to take a photo in its best light (ie. angles to make rooms look bigger, avoiding water stains etc.)

parkville area is very nice..but expensive........as long as you stick to the burbs that surround the cbd area out to say, brunswick/coburg... you should be ok..transport to melb uni is pretty good..especially the trams

Re:Another Melbourne Housing question Reply to this message
Yes be very careful when we got a rental online from interstate it was disasterous...We had never ending probs with the property & the agent wouldnt fix them....So we had to find elsewhere which was an axpensive process....We were paying $390pw but they put it up to $450pw by saying it was calender monthly which we didnt want...It was actually easier being there in Melbourne to get The Age & find a private rental.....All the inner subs are high rent any way the place I mentioned was in Kensington 2br unit...We wanted the Eastern subs too but they were hard to get with the rental demand, & high rent, I dont want to sound negative but that is what happned this was in 2005....Youll find somewhere.....Goodluck...

Re:Another Melbourne Housing question Reply to this message
You are right, I would never rent something without actually taking a look. Can you recommend a cheaper suburb that is not dangerous (crime wise) and somewhat pleasant? Do you think it makes any sense to rent further away? Are there any suburbs that are cheaper but within ~20-30 min travel time? And what other publications would you recommend? Someone mentioned the Age. Any others? Are those rentals that private people have?
Thanks again for all the answers!

Hey qpaulina ---- I'm in Houston Tx and also about to move back to Melbourne. Which part of USA y'all in ? One thing about Melbourne which we do not have here in America is that public transport is a LOT better than here. Lots of train, trams, buses and in some areas, water taxis. (thats more Sydney than Melbourne tho') We're planning on Box Hill to get our "toes in the water" so to speak, then hopefully closer to the CBD. All the very very best with your impending move ! MArk in Houston

Try this site www.noagentproperty.com.a u
This has listings of private rentals from ladlords,
You can also place wanted to rent posts on there. It is all free of charge. They also do buying & selling real estate. I found it good the landlords leave their contact details on there so you can phone or email them....

Re:Another Melbourne Housing question Reply to this message
Brunswick is nice, kind of alternative & multiculural..I liked that part of Melbourne as we looked at a house there that was nice, lots of good shops & cafes etc...still is a bit pricey for rent..as close to city still...I think the Brunswick East was good from memory....
