Which are your favorites, and which are the bad ones to steer clear of?
I'll come back later to check on this thread.
Thanx in advance :) |

| .....banster, pls give me an indication of what would make a suburb nice for you and I'll give my ideas - I love many suburbs of my adopted home city for differing reasons...do you want somewhere near the beach? great shopping close by? CBD proximity? leafy (more bush/forest type environment)? |

The nice suburbs are where people get outside and talk to their neighbours.
Sometimes the happiest people are the poor ones who don't waste their money on petrol guzzling 4WD's that block small streets and don't allow you to see beyond them when you are driving.
Watch out - Boronia and Bayswater are on the way up - get in early. |

Wrong on all counts mydyl - I have lived around Frankston for most of my life & the place has been steadily deteriorating. The scum that you speak of are mainly locally based - I should know as I have to deal with them on a daily basis. |

Except for Williamstown. That's becoming quite a place! Very quaint and cosmopolitan. Yarraville is becoming that way too.
But stay away from Foot-es-craaay- unless you speak fluent hachi kanawa tong be cha |

So are Mt Evelyn and Lilydale.
Ringwood North is nice, as are the Croydon Hills, Wonga Park and Warranwood.
Mooroolbark and Croydon are becoming very high density with a lot of apartments and retiree villages going up, so you'll find some good land around there with an old "knock down", for which the council is handing out permits like lollies. |

***nice suburbs are where people get outside and talk to their neighbours***
That would be Utopia then.
Ive lived in over 10 different suburbs around Melbourne (from Dandenong, Frankston & Preston to Mornington, Sth Yarra, Elsternwick & even Toorak) AND people generally keep to themselves.
All friendly enough I suppose but not really living up to the neighbourly 'myth'. |

Well, where I am at present, we very much live the neighborly myth...in fact, I make this myth occur wherever I go...make it my business to knock on the neighbors doors before signing a lease. You can always move houses, but you cant always change your neighbors. Which is why I prefer to know I have good people around me, then choose a property purely on the look or size of it.

Werribee is not ok.
Best area I found in Melb, Beaumaris, Mentone. On the beach, good public schools, not many lowlifes (you do get them everywhere you know). Housing is expensive though, but you need to pay to get the best areas.... |

...generally I think the closer to the city, the more people tend to keep to themselves- they are not necessarily unfriendly but it seems to take longer to forge a neighbourly relationship where you stop for a chat, have coffee etc (as opposed to merely acknowledging each other). Suburbs I particularly like keeping in mind your criteria - Ascot Vale and Kensington - interesting cultural and demographic mix, bit bohemian, lovely community spirit but over time sadly is becoming more yuppified - great sporting facilities with Essendon nearby - primarily period type homes with small yards.
Larger blocks among suburbs further out - nice parts in Bentleigh, Ormond, Carnegie, Mentone and Cheltenham areas -and towards the Dandenongs (not familiar with nice or not so nice suburbs there).
To state the bleeding obvious, there are pockets of not so good in almost every area and the neighbours are a bit of a lottery - the degree of neighbourly interaction varies within streets in Ascot Vale, the suburb in which I live... |

Always prefer the inner suburbs myself such as St Kilda, Caulfield or Hawthorn etc. On the odd occasion I go into town it takes me 10-15 minutes to get home. Close to everything especially the cafes.
Frankstons Cultural Centre always sounds like an oxymoron to me. LOL |
