Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
No your not jerks for wanting good service. Who doesnt? And being a female I totally understand about the creepy indian guys asking things that are none of their business. For those who dont get good service... they should complain. But people are jerks who automatically think all taxi drivers stink and are out to screw them. A few of my room mates are taxi drivers and they go through hell every weekend. They are treated like dirt and sure they make mistakes but they are genuine mistakes and I know they are not trying to ruin anyones day or make people unhappy.

I hope you, and any other woman who ends up in the same situation, took his number down and reported him.

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
I just started to drive a taxi a week ago. I have driven one shift so far and thankfully have not met any of the people writing on this board.... all my passengers were very understanding and helpful which I am very grateful for. I dont know if that is because I am a girl or from a western country but a positive attitude from both costumers and drivers sure helps. I completely understand that it is frustrating when a cabbie does not know where to go but at the same time ... I still do not know most destinations and it sure is nice when people can help me out with directions or at least be understanding when it takes a minute to punch it in the navigator. When someone was nice or helped me out with directions I usually have them a little off the fare for the trouble and that seemed to help. The 100 land marks test is a great start but it is different learning something on a map and actually driving there plus nerves and the stress of a new job makes it harder to remember. It is not our job to know every place in Melbourne... we have the right to use a navigator and melway if we dont know. Take it easy on those of us just starting out..... I for one do not intend to rip anyone off and do not want to make anyones day unpleasant. Maybe it would help if they had some sort of sign on the taxi for the first month or so stating that this is a new driver in training so people would be a bit more understanding? I dont know. I do agree that manners, safe driving and good service should be given to everyone.... just take it easy on those of use still learning the rest of it.... Thanks to everyone on my first for being so understanding and friendly and not bashing me up or robbing me.... this is Australia... no worries right?!

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
A schoolboy has recounted his shock at having his leg amputated after being run down by a taxi from which he had just done a "runner".

Dung Tran, 15, said he and two friends caught a taxi from King William St in the city about 12.30am on Sunday.

When they got near their destination at Woodville Gardens, they ran from the cab without paying the fare of about $20.

"We decided to run from the cab. We did it and I tripped, I just tripped," Dung said from his hospital bed in Royal Adelaide Hospital.

"It was sort of my fault. It was late and there were no buses. We had no money so we decided to take a cab."

He said the taxi mounted the footpath before hitting him.

"The taxi came and hit my leg, I was in so much pain, it hurt so much. I don't know how he could do that. Why would he do that?"

The taxi driver, whom Dung said was of Indian appearance, stopped momentarily then reversed and drove off.

"I was conscious, lying there in the glass, I lost a lot of blood, I was in a lot of pain," Dung said.

So they can rip you of but dont do it to them.

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
Most taxi drivers are shockers, haven't met a decent one yet...

:)But this said, I'm sure there must be some nice ones out there....driving around courteously, adhering to road signs and children's pedestrian crossings..... handing back elderly peoples hand bags they accidental left behind in the cab.... (after having removed the money from their purses first)...sigh....

All in a days work I guess....I mean, where ever do they find the time to work, in-between running people over and sexually harassing/intimidating passengers?

Great time managers I guess :)

I use taxis regularily & find the middle eastern one try & charge a fraudulent booking fee of $1.50 , even if you didn't book it .It's not much but 30 fares a day would mount up , if they try that on me I pay the correct amount to the cent... no tip..

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
I caught a taxi on Thursday and had the nicest driver. His name was Brad so that should give you an indication of nationality! Anyway, he suggested a short cut towards the airport and it saved time therefore saved money. He was polite, clean, and informative. I rarely take taxi's so I didn't bother getting his car number or anything but he was a rarity.
