| i am a taxi driver of 16 years and have seen many weird things on the road. i see some comments made on taxi drivers driving habits and sit and wonder where u guys come from. Accidents happen every day and drivers on roads do stupid things ( whether they are taxi drivers or not ) taxis stand out and it is a pastime to knock down and de humanise people who drive taxis. we have families and contribute to society in our own way by taking people home safely when they are intoxicated. we take the disabled home when public transport is not an option. I think what u guys should be focusing on is how the taxi industry can do things better . Anyway i dont know if ur stories are true and wonder whether you are unemployed and have a lot of time on ur hands and u go across all forums and bag , whoever. try to be constructive in your comments . ok . i think iwill get many replies so til next time.. |

| The last time I got a taxi in Melbourne, the guy absolutely STUNK! He broke the speed limit and to get around other cars so we could turn left at the lights, he drove onto the footpath. When I asked him why he did that, he replied that he is always in a hurry....Needless to say that was the last time I took a taxi ride! |

| Last cab I caught was in Sydney. When I got into the cab and gave the driver the address I was handed a street directory and told to tell him where to go. As he had no idea. my last ride in a Brisbane cab left me feeling sorry for the cab driver that had to put up with my drunken abuse from the city to Ipswich when he would not drive his cab through a flooded section of road at Oxley. The bloke definately deserved the fare he received for that trip. But not my abuse. I must also add that my only cab ride in Melbourne was ok. Theres always good and bad on both sides. |

The worst is Melbourne taxi drivers are ripping off innocent people everyday. I recently travelled in Australia and my credit card # was stolen by a cab driver. Since then, I have heard of tonnes of people with the same story. Take a cab ride in Melbourne, cabbie uses a manual swipe machine to take credit card info...everything seems legit until you get your statement. Then there is a mysterious "limo" charge that appears a week or so after the initial cab ride. The transaction generally looks like this:
CAB ACCOUNT AUST BRUNSWICK AU
or
ARDEN TAXI LIMO NTH MELBOURNE
The merchant comes up as a 'Limo' service. It's totally bogus.
Check your credit card statements!!! You'll be surprised how many people have found these charges. |

You get some good taxi drivers & then you dont.
I hardly ever travel in a taxi by myself, as i do get the occassional driver who wants to chat, im not in the cab to have a chat about my life & answer their personal questions, im there to get from A to B,
I'm sick of the questions "who do you live with?" "do you have a boyfriend" "what do you do with yourself?" i say id just like to get to my destination thankyou.
When i travel with someone else, surprise! surprise! this never happens, so i only travel with taxi's in cases i have no choice.
Also not to mention the cabs who dont know where they are going, and dont even know how to get to the certain destination
When you ring the company, most of the time they ask for your destination and then once you give the street they hang up, sometimes you need to ask if they can get one with eftpos or a van for more people, also they say to give a name but im sick of that method
because anyone can get in the taxi and the driver says "is your name so & so" and the person will say yes so they can stay in the taxi, and even half the time the driver never asks "are you so & so name that called the taxi" they just accept whoever.
I'm sick of ordering a taxi, & then when it gets closer someone else closer to said taxi at the time runs to it and asks to get in, they accept which means i need to spend another so & so amount of money to call AGAIN, to ask for another taxi.
Even at the taxi docks outside the train stations, ive had cases where it is pouring rain me and my friend were waiting next to dock number 1 for the first taxi to get there, it was starting to come to the dock, and then some women after the ramp from the train goes to the driver and gets in, they are NOT suppose to do that, their suppose to go to their first docking spot and get passengers there.
Me and my friend were standing in the pour and rain for 10 minutes and that woman had just got off the train and into a warm taxi |

maybe she got it because he wanted a female on her own to ask personal questions too, which they do this a fair bit when your alone.
All cabs should NOW have to have a GPRS system in their car, because they ask where to go when they should be the ones who know since they drive everywhere, it should be compulsary to have one, i have seen a few cabs with one, it works wonders because it gives the shortest way and you KNOW they cant stuff you around. |

If they are asking these types of question I'd be telling them to shut up and mind your own F'ing business. |

| My Credit card has been fraudulantly used by by both Metro Cablimos Nth Melbourne and then 3 months later by Alpha Taxis and Limos Nth Melbourne. My card card was manually swiped when I was down in melbourne to see Wicked in July. It definetly pays to check your credit card statements. |

| I am a girl from America and I am starting my taxi course. I think you guys should try it before you act like such jerks to these guys. I am really nervous about starting because of people like you. I am not going to know most of the places people want to go for a while... how do you expect people to learn? If everyone had to know the city inside out before starting to drive taxis I think we would have very few people driving. Give them a break or why dont you go to India or Somalia and try to support your family by driving cabs there and speaking Hindi.... at least they are not sitting home on benefits. |

=====================
so we are the jerks when we order a taxi and it never shows up?
We are the jerks when we patiently and rightfully wait at dock 1 outside a train station for the taxi to come only to see it coming but it picks up someone else 1 minute away where they are not suppose too?
we are the jerks when they try and talk us females up and ask personal details?
we are the jerks when they dont listen to an address and they start going the wrong way, its what a GPS system is for! |

| Try contacting the Victorian Taxi Directorate for assistance - take a look at <http:www.taxi.vic.gov.au > for information on making a complaint against cabbies and their companies. A friend of mine did so and go the result she wanted. The Directorate takes theft/fraud very seriously. Contacting them is the only way to stop cabbies from taking advantage of tourists and others. They also deal with inappropriate behaviour and comments from cabbies, cab equipment failures and cabbies' failures to pick up/drop off passengers as requested by the passengers. The Directorate will contact the police if appropriate. Of course, you are open to contacting Victoria Police yourself and making a complaint about the fraud/theft or any other illegal act. Otherwise, you should notify your bank but I guess by now you've already done that to stop the transaction and/or have the transaction investigated. And to be fair to cabbies, they do have a difficult job and earn around AUD$8 an hour: they tolerate theft, threats of violence, actual violence, racial and other abuse, drunkenness, drug abusers and rudeness (to mention a few daily issues). None of that is an excuse for their own bad behaviours but it's important to understand cabbies have a difficult existence which some can't escape for financial reasons. Also they're not employees so don't get the same protections as everyone might think they do and sometimes they pay an arm and a leg to use the cab. So, that's my balanced view for what it's worth! |

| clgri2 - great advice. I rang the VTD to complain about a cabbie who was obviously trying to rip me off. The lady rang me back a couple of days later saying she'd had other complaints and the driver was banned. A very efficient service from all accounts |
