Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
Are these guys the lowest form of scum ever ?

Yesterday I saw one parked across a pedestrian crossing while he waited for the taxi queue to clear. A blind guy walked into the side of the taxi before anyone could stop him. The driver thought it was quite funny until people started abusing him, and of course, we were then being racist.

A mate of mine - who works in the control room of one of the large taxi companies here in Mellbourne - tells me that Mohammed is by far the most common name amongst our taxi drivers. Could explain a few things...

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
Yes mate. Taxi drivers, particularly those from Africa, the middle east or the sub continent are not up to par and the licensing requirements should be a lot tougher than what they are. They have to attend a 2 week course with an exam at the end of the course. We all know that pass or fail, they are awarded a licence regardless of the exam score.

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
LOL

Melbourne taxi drivers are a dream...

My last 3 weekends of catching a taxi:
17/11: Waited 2.5 hours in the middle of perth for a taxi, had about 50 - 60 drive passed. All available, they would first ask you where you are going then decline you.. or they would refuse to turn there metres on or demand 20 % tip. After finally getting one at 6am sunday morning the taxi askedfor a $100 deposit for a $35 fair. Fair enough we wanted to get home so we gave him it. He then told us he never said it was a deposit it was payment to get home.
24/11 Wait an hour, get in a taxi told him we have cab charge and he refused to take us even though all taxis are supposed to accept it. His taxi company was in the list of accepting it. We told him where to go and got another taxi who would only take us half way because 'he had to get home'.. we called the company to complain not being abusive but she said 'my job isnt to listen to you whinge' and hung up
on the 1st we got in a taxi to be told we werent to speak on our mobiles as its his taxi and we have no right to? he then demanded a tip and a $10.00 eftpos charge.. however when we called them the voice recording now says 'Our operators have the right to terminate the call SHOULD YOU COMPLAIN'

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
Has any one ever used a taxi in Moscow or St Petersburg.
They do not believe in seat belts, speed limits or indicators.

And YES, they are 1000 times better than Melbourne taxis.Only ever caught a taxi in Melbourne twice and to this day I reckon both drivers were out of work suicide drivers.
I actually asked one if the bomb was still in the boot!!!!

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
Being from America, I would never attempt to drive here in Australia...(Can't get my head around driving the opposite way of how I've driven all my life.) I don't own a car and rely on public transportation. In the past 8 years, I have used taxis frequently and must say I have never had a bad driver. Nearly every time I'm in a taxi I have a great conversation with the driver...Before going where I'm going I print off a map from my door to my destination...(I know this isn't possible in many circumstances). My husband is in a wheelchair and we have always had drivers who gently help him in and out of the cab...stow his chair...One time on my way to America, I gave the driver my credit card upon arrival at the airport...in the excitment of my trip, I forgot to get my card back from the driver...He went into the airport but could not find me to return the card...he then drove all the way back to my home to return the card to my husband. For NO charge for that kindness. As far as speaking English...at least they are trying to learn a new language and learning their way around a huge city. Do you know where everything is without looking at a map? At least they have a job...They put up with drunks...clean puke out of their cabs...put up with people who run off without paying their fares...Give them a break, already.

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
Well said mrsron1. I have driven taxi's on the Gold Coast on a weekend and weekday basis for the last 3 years. All the *** you have to put up with between 2 to 6 in the morning at Surfers Paradise. Drivers are entitled to ask for proof of payment upfront. Look on the dashboard or windscreen of the taxi and it is written down on the same sticker showing the rates the meter runs at. Did you know that if you dont own the taxi, and are only driving it. You only receive 45% of the daily takings off the meter. The other 55% goes to the owner. Of that 45%, you have to pay 10% GST, pay as you go Tax. and $5 car insurance for the shift.
So lets say you got $400 on the meter for the day. The owner would receive $220, you get $180. Of that $180, you have less $18 GST, $5 insurance and maybe $30 pay as you go tax. So your take home pay for a Sunday $127. Up at 1.00am to 1.00pm (12 hours). Just over $10 a hour for a Sunday. Believe you me, during the week its much worse than that. Its busy up here at the moment, but it has its quiet periods just like anywhere else. So who wants to be a taxi driver. People might say they are scum, but there not scum when you want to get home late at night or early in the morning. The people who bag them, wouldnt have the nerve to sit in the drivers seat and be confronted by different situations everyday all day long.

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
The rule is if you do not know where you r going then
what r you doing driving a taxi in the first place.
Give me a break some of this taxi drives have been well
knowen for there bad manners, anyway that may well be in the USA.
Over here in Australia you have to sit for taxi test and in that test is do you know where to go from A TO B with out
reading a MAP.Taxi drives need to do a test every two years
to update there skills to drive in Australia just like what
Howard said to become Australia you have to be able to read.
A and they do not have to pick drunks up or people that look
like they r going to do harm to them they can drive straite
past them. And yes there r some people that r bad manners to
Taxi drivers to Safty comes first both ways.anyway i catch a
tram or i drive my self to work. For one taxis change to much
money. And the trouble most of the time happens after midnight
by that time they mostly drunk,so the taxi driver can ever
pick them up or go straite past them and waite for some one
that suits him for a safe and happy trip to where
ever they r going.good night. "Read Taxi Rules of driving a
Taxi."

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
dear all: first up, have been taking cabs in Melbourne for many years and most cabbies are efficient and polite, thank you cabbies.
Have noticed a trend lately where the driver is NOT the person in the picture, though he may be a relative because he looks like the picture somewhat.
Because these ring-ins have clearly NOT passed the taxi test - eg, do not know where Brunswick St Fitzroy is, drive at speeds approaching that of sound, have extremely limited spoken English and "try it on" with female passengers - I wonder how many of them are cousin Ranjit or nephew Abdul working illegally while "studying" or on the dole in Australia?Does anyone actually check the bona fides of taxi drivers because this would appear to be a serious and common problem. I have a card from a taxi driver who recommended me to ring his mobile to get a proper Taxi driver, not a cowboy, and this really works, though it may be not legal either?

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
Good luck to you if you have found a good driver. On the Gold Coast, all I did to obtain my licence, was complete a 5 day training course. Actually 2 full days of training. 2 days of Taxi stories given by the instructor, and 1/2 a day being driven around the coast being shown different ranks. Prior to commencing the course, you have to go to Queensland Transport, to obtain a Personal Character check through the Police and Transport. This usually should be done 1 week prior to commencing the course. That way you will have your clearance during the course. Once the course has finished, you take your certificate and Character check report to transport, and pay about $50, and now you can drive a taxi. The same afternoon you finish the course if you like. The identification you obtain from transport is called a Drivers Authority. It doesn't need to be displayed in the car, but you should always be able to produce it if asked. There is no driving test, to see how you drive. Any tests of knowledge of the Gold Coast, are all open book. There is no way you can fail. There is simply more shifts than drivers. Some drivers drive atleast 6 days a week (12 shifts). That is why there is so many different nationalities as drivers out there.

I know this is a weeeee bit racist, but you know the saying, 'rare as hen's teeth'? For a bit of a change, try 'rare as a blond Melbourne cab driver'.

You'd have more luck with a Rhode Island Red's molars....

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
A taxi horror story for you all.

A friend of mine caught a cab in the city (Melbourne, obivously this being the Victorian board and all). The driver asked the usual question "where would you like to go, boss?". My mate replied "Altona".

The city to Altona isn't a hard request in my book. It just a simple case of going over the West Gate Bridge and turning at Millers Road. Easy as pie, in fact pie couldn't be that easy.

Well not for this Cabbie, his next question after asking 'where do you wanna go, boss?' Was 'can you show me how to get there?'. Oh, for crying out loud! Your a bloody taxi driver you should know this backwards and in your sleep. This banana didn't even have a Melways or Navman in this car, both of these things should be required equipment for any taxi driver by today's standards.

Taking a deep breath, my mate gave the guy the instructions and the taxi driver glazed over. So, once again and with feeling, he explained which roads and ways to go. This time the driver seemed to catch on and off they went.

As the trip slowly progressed my mate fell into a booze induced sleep, it had been a big night. This is now one of the biggest mistakes he ever made. He was woken up by the driver asking 'where do I make the turn off, mate?'.

They had reached the outskirts of Geelong by then.

To Mister:

hahahahahahahaha!!!!! As annoying as that would have been for your friend, that story is still hysterical!

But sadly yet another example of the problem with taxi drivers today.... some are great I will give you that, friendly, know where they are going and don't try to grope you in your seat... but then there are those like this one who are completely clueless..

It's all a bit of russian roulette isn't it? At least we don't have the huge problem of illegal cabbies, not like in London anyway... I would just be waiting to cross the street and could have 3-5 men in their personal vehicles stop and ask if I want a mini cab? Yeah right, I really want to end my night getting into the car of a complete and utter, untraceable stranger! Sure, I've had a few pints with the girls, let's see if I can get raped or ripped off on the way home..

You want mini cab???

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
Another taxi horror story.

Went to the Casino for a big night out.

We caught a cab in.

The driver, we got to take us in, was a total pro. He was polite, well spoken and knew where he was going. Not saying that the casino is a difficult location to get to but it was a hassle free ride.

After the big night of fun and binge drinking, we all called it a night. We headed to the taxi rank in between Jeff shed and the Caz. The line of people was, like always, bloody huge. We jumped in the line and waited patiently.

45 minutes to an hour past went we finally made it to the head of the line. The first taxi we tried to get into wouldn't take us because he wanted to stick to one side of the city tonight, the side that wasn’t ours - WTF!? The next taxi wouldn't take us because he figured that Oak Park was too far for him to travel Double WTF!!? And the final taxi driver didn't wanna take us because he didn't trust us after we'd been rejected by the two other drivers already - WTF infinity!!!?.

It took the gentle persuasion of a casino security guard to finally land us a driver that was willingly (under sufferance, I a sure you) to take us to our home suburb.

Re:Melbourne Taxi Drivers Reply to this message
yes i have used a taxi in moscow, and they certainly are better than the ones in melbourne, the ones in melbourne have certainly deteriorated, i'm am totally disappointed. the taxi if took its driver could not follow instruction, then nearly caused an accident. they really need to sort this problem out i am even wondering if they are indeed licenced. by the way they drive......i certainly could do a better job. but being a woman i would fear the drunken, and violent people i would have to pick up. so i won't venture there
