Where to live Reply to this message
Hi tassie people

I currently live in a small town in the North East of Tassie. I love the town and people around here but I'm completely over seeing nothing but clear-felled forests around me and can't stand watching anymore destruction of the forests around Ben Lomond etc. They've even closed the local camping grounds because it's all been clear-felled and have moved logging operations into other natural tourist attractions (despite local opposition). The local council seems to be very pro-Gunns and has been known to make it hard for other businesses (notably tourist-related, especially eco-tourism) to get established in the area.

So I'm thinking of moving.

problem is - I don't really want to live in the city and I don't want to move to another area with the same level of destruction to the environment going on.

Can anyone tell me if there's anywhere to live in Tassie where I would be able to get away from such a high degree of logging and clear-felling or any other kind of rampant environmental destruction or am I just dreaming?? Is there a local council in tassie that aren't in bed with Gunn's? I'm being advised there isn't. Is this true?

This is a serious question and I have no problems living in areas that are considered "remote" because my business doesn't rely on being close to the city so if you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know.

Coach, there are plenty of places around that verge onto dairying country, so what you need to find is a place that backs onto Nat Park and has a dairying community or a fishing community surrounded by Nat Parks or Forest Reserves (FR). FRs cannot be logged.

Strachan is good.
Southport is my favourite.
I am inland from Penguin. I have the closeness of two major centres for my business, Burnie and Devonport.

Re:Where to live Reply to this message
hey,

I used to live in Launceston (pulm mill centeral) til I moved to Perth WA earlier this year, from experience and personal tastes if your looking for areas that wont harm the enviroment alot try the following places.

: Geevston
: Penquin
: Strahan
: St Helens
: Orford/Triabuna
: Bicheno

hope this is some help to you.

Mitch
Perth WA (ex Launceston, pulp mill centeral)

btw I sit on the fence with regards to the mill, one of my parents used to have alot to do with this development til they moved department....I think its good for local jobs, may even make me come back if I can get garruenteed work but its maybe not the best thing for the local enviroment, thing is people need work especially young people like myself, I'm only 19 and lack of work was one reason that I left the state.

Id like to make the move from Sydney to Launceston area, it's quite common for Sydney workers to drive for half hour to an hour to get to work, it's just kilometres and kilometres of boring suburbs and heavy traffic here. What is a good rural place to live within half an hour of Lonnie?

Either side of the Tamar is pretty, But mind you there is still the controversy about the Pulp Mill, Lilydale is a pretty little town about 15 to 20 mins from Lton, on the other side towards Hobart there is Perth, love it or hate it lol, Longford as well. lots of little towns really just depends on what you are looking for.

Just be aware of icy roads in winter when choosing where to live.

Re:Where to live Reply to this message
what's the icy roads? We get icy roads up in the Blue Mountains in winter,I don't think Tassie's as cold as that,I admit only visiting Tassie in the warmer months, Sydney has plenty of days when it gets so hot and sticky you can barely stand the heat outside and you can't sleep at night without a fan on, it's very like Melbourne or Brisbane that way. It's funny, they complain about Sydney here getting "Melbourne weather" (the rain) but when Sydney gets lots of rain and Melbourne gets good weather they stop boasting about it!,lol! Yes,Tamar valley is pretty don't know why there's not lots more houses on the other side (Dilston) maybe bushfires?. I checked out the realestate. com.au site and Longford, Evandale, Westbury, Hagley look nice as does Exeter, I don't want lots of trees around me because we have regular bushfires here in Sydney and forests are a dangerous thing to have near you. Have been through Perth, it looks a bit run down, and there's a guy there taking forever building a windmill that hasn't caught on with the locals yet by what Ive heard! lol! Haven't seen Lilydale yet sounds nice though, Westbury has nice scenery with Mt Roland but looks like it might be getting pricey now because of the scenery, just like Deviot has in the Tamar valley.

Re:Where to live Reply to this message
'Black ice' is dangerous and associates with forested, mountain or deep valley roads with a spring water seepage. The Tamar valley has a fog problem in Autumn to Spring, so living along the banks of the Tamar has a drawback, but that is not a reason to not live there, it is just something to be aware of.
Evandale would be my choice if I could find a nice secluded acre block.
Travelers Rest, Blackstone have their good points.
The idea is to come down, take a 6 month rental lease and look around, store your furniture and only unpack the essentials.

Re:Where to live Reply to this message
Ps... black ice is suburban too, have coped it on the old gorge brige a couple on times on the way to work.

I would stay way from Lonnie these days as the Pulp Mills as a nasty carinogenic threat to every ones health. Georgetown will be up wind from it but I wouldnt go near the ocean if that monstrosity of a mill ever eventuates.
I am a big fan of Penquin and Burnie, a lot of people like Ulverstone but to me it kind of has the feel of a ginat retirement village. Strahan is nice as is bell bouy beach. I like scammander but not St.Helens. There are some interesting places in the midlands like Ross and Oatlands.
With the current state government in Gunns pocket any place that still has trees is certain to be sacrificed to appease Lennons Gay god. 2 Johns definitely dont make a right.
