Any cat caught in a declared feline-free zone in Tasmania can be killed by authorities under proposed new laws.
Farmers will be able to destroy any cat caught on their property if it is found more than 1km from a home.
The Cat Management Bill 2009 allows Councils and State Authorities to declare parks and reserves prohibited areas for cats.
All cats will have to be microchipped and desexed.
Reuters, AP, AAP.
Pretty tough on cats who have a natural instinct to cruise their neighbourhoods (and not just the toms), in town or country.
Personally, I think it's cruel and unhealthy (for cat and owner) to have and keep cats inside all the time.
Are cats a popular family pet in Tas / Aus? |

| Probably not the silliest idea I've ever heard. The natural instinct of cats is certainly to roam far and wide but whilst they pretend to be stupid (unless of course they want something), they can be trained with a bit of effort. Another point worth considering is that the world can be a dangerous place for a moggy, so keeping the beastie restricted to a known safe area may well allow it to live to a ripe old age. As an aside, I've noticed that burmese appear to have significantly more road sense than any other breeds, does anyone else have something to add on this topic ?? |

Dogs cause more damage than cats........
This is pure descrimination for cats & cat owners.
The same law needs to be applied for dogs. |

I notice alot of dog owners like to make cats out to be the villans all the time merely to skategoat dogs!
It is cruel to keep a cat inside all the time just as it is for a dog.
It comes down to the owner for responsibility of owning any animal. My cats are very well looked after, clean & have are desexed. They cause no harm and when outside they just sit around in the garden & arent even interested in wandering off!
As I am a responsible owner....
If you give your animals love and a good home they will be always good its not that hard. If one is not capable of this then they should not have any animals!
People are to blame not the animal in this case cats! |

Big Bad wadejohn lol !!!
I have two cats, one who has been dumped on me because the owners two doors up decided that the new boyfriend and his dog were more important.
He is now a well fed happy cat who lives with me and watches the birds eat his left over food.
I am a little tired of "heroes" who go around hating and killing cats because they cant control them. Pick on the human waste that is more your size, for they are the ones that mistreat their animals, which in turn cause them to wander and kill for food. |

"I am a little tired of "heroes" who go around hating and killing cats because they cant control them." - No cat is welcome at my place, not by me or the native species that live there.
"Pick on the human waste that is more your size, for they are the ones that mistreat their animals, which in turn cause them to wander and kill for food." - ?
You protect your cats, I'll protect my "cats". |

If someone harmed my cat heaven help them!
I think this 'cataphobia' is pathetic. It is sick if you intend harming a cat!
Like I said i bet all you cat haters think that dogs are all innocent well that is rubbish dogs cause more damage if uncontrolled....
I am an animal lover and find this very inhumane & disgusting.....
In my belief one is cursed to death if you intentianally take the life of a cat..... |

If you are a cat breeder & or shower your cat will not be desexed so how does that fit in to this bill?
If you are a responsible cat owner and just have your cat as a pet I do belive that they should be desexed as all mine are.
This is a pure and direct hit in the face for responsible loving cat owners.....
SHAME! |

Big Bad wadejohn lol !!!
He's just a big brave thug who focuses on small animals because he is terrified of taking on something his own size. Probably the schoolyard bully in earlier years & I wouldn't be surprised if he was a blue uniformed porker now
On a different tack, has anyone had experience with attack trained cats ?? Some friends of mine on the Gold Coast (sunny place for shady folks) with a prestige car dealership found that the gar dogs were scratching the cars. They did a bit of research and discovered that Siamese cats could be trained as 'guard cats' (check the history of these beasties). Sometime later a scumbag did attempt to 'borrow' a car from the showroom, alarm went off & when the owners arrived, scumbag was a bit the worse for wear and the cats were looking like they had just swallowed a whole flock of canaries :). True story. As any cat owner knows, even a single upset moggy is a terrifying creature, with razor sharp bits going every which way at several times the speed of light. When properly trained as these ones were they are more than a match for any human. |

| Its obvius that most people, even cat owners, believe that cats are virtually brain-dead creatures with maybe one tenth the intelligence of the average mentally reatarded sheep, however one only needs to consider the story 'dogs have owners, cats have servants' to get a handle on where they are coming from. I've had a tribe of felines over the years, most recent a burmese which definitely has a few more marbles than most of cat-dom. Among other things, they appear to have a naural instinct to avoid roads, maybe they don't like all the dragons or something. Could be the noise because they tend to avoid any loud places. Still the natural instinct to roam a bit but nothing like the average alleycat that travels kilometers every evening if it can. One can almost see the wheels turning in the brain when its brought inside for the night & told 'NO', your are not going out to chase the wildlife !!'. Beastie is obviously thinking 'now how can I outwit this human ??' A friend in Brisbane thinks he has found the solution to cat wandering. He has an average alleycat & a beagle. Now anyone who knows beagles will be fully aware that they are the friendliest most inoffensive doggies imaginable but infinitely superior escape-ologists & wanderers to any cat on the planet (like a canine version of Harry Houdini). For some weird reason, these two are so intent on looking out for each other that they apparently don't have the time or the inclination to do the normal wandering bit. |

So very true.. maybe they should have open season in Australia, on humans... well actually, the country is headed that way anyway, without our help. There seem to be more feral humans around than feral animals. |

| Sadly the worsr human ferals are incapable of recognizing their inferiority to nature. At least there are a few unmistakeable signs of incorrigible feraldom. An urban assault vehicle is unquestionably the most obvious, followed by support of barbaric 'sports' like footBRAWL or THUGby. |

Most sentient cat owners have had their (non breeding) felines neutered, furthermore any owners who don't take any pet to a vet at least twice per year shouldn't be peremitted to own anything except possibly a pet rock. There is no doubt that any cat can do a lot of damage, however contrary to the claims of some, they can be trained to keep to their own properties. |

Two breeding pair of humans who come into this country who also dont believe in immunisation or have never been immunised can have the same effect on babies and children. Not to mention feral people who have dogs that injure and kill kids and animals alike. They should be culled also. |

People cause more damage than dogs and cats put together.
Anyway, responsible pet ownership should be encouraged. Hope the idea works! |

Yes thats what we need more of. Like with the christmas season approaching many people are giving puppies & kittens as presents. When the person who is given them dumps them or ill treats them this is a big problem.
Never give an animal as a present to an unsuspecting person. The amount that end up in animal rescue & on the streets in the season is just heartbreaking.
I strongly will not tolerate animal crueltily & irresponsibility in any form.
The poor animal knows no better & looks to us humans for love & shelter so please be responsable. |

Unquestionably. If we are gonna get halfway serious about culling feral species, we need to develop a strategy to stop human expansion and its attendant destruction of flora & fauna |
