| Born & raised in Tassie & PROUD OF IT,why is it that Tassie has to be attached to Melbourne in programs such as A current Affairs, we are an Island not a state, we are surrounded by water & we certainly dont have anything in common with Melbourne. I spent sometime in Queensland & I found that they were paranoid about been asked directions to certian areas, they give a scared look & p...off, frightened that maybe a single mum with 3 young kids would bash or rob them. Most homes have bars on their windows WHY? DONT THEY TRUST THEIR FELLOW STATES PEOPLE, or their neighbours I think it is rather sad living on egg shells. Also in nearly any given area in Tassie it is a short trip to the beaches, or the beautiful mountains & so many nature walks. Tasmania offers a safe & very friendly place in all areas, most people only have to travel about 10 to 15 minutes to the nearest town or their work place, no major traffic jams. Yes we do incur crimes of different degrees but you will get that anywhere in Australia, but I know from experience that Tasmania is the best Island to raise your family for security & safety. I enjoyed visiting Australia & seeing your venues of interest & the sightseeing. As the saying goes THE GRASS IS NOT ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE. WE HAVE TRIED TO KEEP TASSIE A SECRET SO WE wouldn't be INDATED WITH MAINLANDERS, it is very surprising how many people come for a visit & end up buying realestate, then relocating here, our secret is out TAMANIA IS THE ENVY OF THE REST OF AUSTRALIA. TRUE BLUE TASSIE WITH 2 HEADS, TWICE AS SMART THAN THE REST, DONT KNOCK IT UNLESS YOU TRY IT. |

Good afternoon,
My name is Dan. My wife and I are considering a move to Tasmania in the next few months. I am an American.... I know I know.... and she is a Kiwi. We are both good natured, easy going people who are in their early 30's and looking for a great place to settle down and raise a family. Tasmania of course sounds amazing... I am an avid fly fisherman. I'd appreciate some insight into the job market, weather and how humble Americans can expect to be treated. Many thanks for your responses! Dan |

Hi Dan
I've lived in tassie for 3 years so I don't know that I'm the best person to answer you but since no-one else is I'll give it a go.
First off the weather - it's cold in winter and some of Autumn/Spring. But it varies across the state (even tho it's a small state). Generally speaking the North is warmer than the south (except up near Ben Lomond ski resort for obvious reasons) and the West is colder than the East.
You get snow up in the North East, Hobart region and South West/West. It rains lots everywhere in winter (although there was a drought problem and water restrictions this summer in some parts) and it rains A LOT in the West coast area.
The summers have been gorgeous tho, no humidity and the air is clean here. Also, when the sun is out and there's no wind here in winter (like it's been the last few days) it's stunning.
As for jobs, the State doesn't have a lot of jobs but there are areas of skills shortages. You can check government employment sites to find out what they are. You can see some of the regional vacancies (including Launceston) at www.jobsguide.com.au Also, there are a lot of opportunities for starting a business of your own - especially in service and tourism areas.
Check this link for some other ideas on websites to look at
http://www.bcl.com.au/hobart/jobs.htm
Tassie is one of the safest places to live and great for families. There is so much for kids to do, swimming, boating, skiing, trail-bike riding, horse-riding etc etc and nothing is really too far away here.
There are MILLIONS of places to fish - it's legendary over here. So you'd be happy too. As for how you might be treated... about the same as a mainlander - with suspicion and resentment LOL Not really. Some locals can be a bit like that but what I really like about Tassie is how friendly and down-to-earth locals are. They are quirky tho. :) I've met a few Americans who've moved here and they're doing fine. |

Thank you all for the great advice and links. I will have a look at them today and see what opportunities are out there. Both of us have worked in areas of community development for years and we would love to get on with a government agency of sorts. We are thinking Hobart sounds like an area we would probably like to consider first.
Of course, I have been doing a bit of reading and it sounds like water is a big issue throughout Australia. With all of the rain on the west coast, do you think Tasmania will suffer the same problems as the rest of the country in the future? I am curious to hear people's opinions regarding the future of Tasmania. What do you think the state will look like in 10-20 years? OK one more thing.... are the homes insulated? Much to my surprise, New Zealand homes are not insulated for the winter months. Is that something we should consider if we purchase a place at some point?
Once again, many thanks for your time and opinions. Dan |

| No water issues in Hobart, having come from the 'mainland' four years ago and living in drought areas, Tassie does not realise how easy they are doing it. I was appalled when we first arrived at the number of people hosing their driveways, it still frustrates me, but Tassie likes to rebel against the 'mainland'(media/radio stations actively push this) - as evidenced by the need of the original threadmaker to do an 'us and them' thread. What you will learn is that Launceston (pronounced LON) and Hobart can't stand each other, Tassie belives it is hard done by compared to the mainland, and that while the state is full of tree huggers, they have no issue with rubbish or roadkill. It is a beautiful state, that is surrounded by water, that will end up with the best water and climactic conditions (Once the water & sewerage issues up North are fixed), if only they would get the chip off their shoulder and start espousing themselves, as themselves without feeling the need to constantly compare with the 'dreaded' mainland. |

LOL I don't know about Hobart and Launceston "can't stand each other" - there is a rivalry about which is better just like you see in other states about "the North side" vs the "South side" etc.
Hobart people consider Hobart the only place to live but Launceston people prefer Lonny. East coast folks will tell you their home is the best and so will those who live in Ulverstone or Penguin. It's just an indication of how many nice places there are to live here.
There may not be water issues in Hobart (lucky you) but other parts of the state had serious problems with water having to be trucked in when their usual supply ran out and water restrictions being applied in other parts. The bushfires this summer effected several areas of Tassie and were fuelled by how unusually dry the bush/forest was. Some of the central Tassie areas are still drought effected.
The "us and them" attitude, I believe, comes from the way Tassie is treated by the rest of Australia. I found a similar thing in Western Australia. Australia is very NSW/Victoria-centric. |

Obviously you dont know alot about Tasmania at all. I was born and bred and lived there for 43 years. Its been a long time since I can remember a summer without water restirctions. The 'midlands' of Tas has been in drought for the past 10 years.
I know live in QLD and I am appalled the 'mainlanders' have the cheek to call Tasmania backwards.
It seems to me that it is the mainlanders who are constantly comparing themselves to us. It is the mainlanders that need to get the chip off their shoulders. I mean, Tassie is the test state for anything new. As a solicitor, I see each day the antiquated ideas of the so called 'advanced' mainlanders.
It is the mainlanders who carry on about with the 2 headed jokes and the incest, but not 1 can tell you where these stories started.
Now that I have moved to the mainland and have had my '2nd head' removed and I only have half a brain, I feel just like a mainlander. I fit in so well with QLD'ers, they dont even suspect where I come from. |

| Tassie is absolutely fantastic. We went for 10 days over the Easter Break and fell in love with the place. My sister-in-law transferred there with work four years ago from Qld and she told me that with a state population of 480 000 there is only 40 000 in the workforce. There must be a downside to the place because it seemed like a big secret that no-one is talking about. Absolutely beautiful and the people are friendly and lack cynicism. Employmnt prospects are not great but no doubt there would be scope for starting something. Coming from Qld, we are no strangers 600 km trips in the car and we did manage to circum-navigate the island in one day. It took about 11 hours but it can be done. |

| I totally agree with everything you have said about Tas, Yeh Good O'l Tas, this is the cleanest, coolest place to bring up your family. pIts a pity a few other States didnt catch on to the beauty of Tas. (But we dont want them really coming down here and taking away our peace, do we? I have been all around Aussie, except Darwin. (mmm thought it would be far to Hot and dirty for myself and my 3 children, who have all grown up now with their own famillies and know the true meaning of a future here in Tas. In my travels I still came back, most Tasmanians do at some stage in their life. |

Hi Dan (everyone),
I have lived her all my life, so here is a run down. For your reference, I'm not a worker as such, I own 3 businesses.
Weather: Summer, stunning, can get as warm as most states in Australia if not warmer. Our heat is completely different ot the Gold Coast Heat. Our heat seems to have more "sting" in it than up there. So be warned, we are cold in winter and mighty hot in summer.
Fishing: Tasmania waters/lakes are considered one of the best fishing areas in Australia. We have awesome fly-fishing opportunities in Tasmania. If your a hardcore fly--fishing person Tassie is a must try. :)
Jobs: Tassie has a population of approx: 480,000 people, we are not Melbourne, Brisbane or Sydney who has Millions just in one state. So our job opportunites may seem low but they are not exactly low compared to our population. With that said we do NOT have the worst unemployment rate. There is a skills shortage in building area and some driver jobs. I'm looking for 1 person for 2 jobs I operate (I operate 3 in total). There will be a second opening in one of the jobs in a month or so time. So there is jobs out there, depends on what field you are looking for.
People: The most friendliest people in Australia. However I found some people in Adelaide were friendly too, but overall 90% of people in Tassie have a place for everyone. We are like family down there, hence we get called 2 heads etc. We look out for everyone, is that bad? No!
Have fun! |

they must have taken the head without any brain? If they had taken this head with the half brain then the QLD'ers would suspect you to be a victorian. |
