| I'm planning a return trip to Tassie later this year, can anyone tell me how long to take to drive from Hobart to the West Coast, say, Strahan? I've seen the advice from the travel brochures, but would like an opinion from someone who has actually done it, and how long it took etc. My plan is to hire a car in Devonport, drive up around the north, then cut across to Hobart. Also, what areas would you suggest I avoid, and what areas I should make a point of visiting. I've driven up the centre of Tassie, seen Hobart and down to Snug, also over to the east to Scottsdale and surrounds. Also seen Devonport, Launceston, Deloraine and Port Arthur, Richmond, all around that area. |

If you drive the route you have described you will be zig zagging all over the state and it will take you weeks and weeks to see what you want to see ..
If you fly into Hobart and want to go the north/west way then depending on how long you are planning to stay in one town or the other its hard to estimate.. The roads up through there are very narrow in places and winding, If you continue on you would come to Devonport and then on to Launceston, Deloraine is in between both cities, If you go from Launceston to Scottsdale then continue down the east coast through St Helens Bicheno and Swansea back to Hobart and then you still have to go back to Richmond which is about a half hour drive from Hobart then back to Hobart to drive onto Port Arthur...and then back to Hobart again to fly out.. You will need at least 3 weeks .. and thats just a rough estimate ... |

It takes about 6 hours to drive from Hobart to Strahan. When your over west visit Tullah its beautiful around there! Rugged mountains, rainforets...
Down south go all through the Huon Valley, & right down to Co ckle Creek, its lovely all the way through & theres heaps of towns to checkout. The Hartz Mountains via Geeveston is nice too do. The Highlands & Great Lakes is worth checkin out but the roads are a bit rough in places pending on your vehichle.
Go to Collinsvale near Hobart there is a great walk there into rainforests & falls. Its called Myrtle Falls...not on many tour maps...ssshhh!! Fern Tree on the way up Mt Wellington is just stunning with walking trails all through rain forest glades falls giant man ferns.....
Mt Field national park is nice with some of the worlds tallest trees....
And up NW Stanley is a nice town with the famous 'Nut' which is a great climb! & Arthurs River...
Well theres a few sites I came up with that I enjoed in my travels!

Thanks to the sensible people who replied, southern, you really are a bad example of a south aussie, just put a sock in it, and let the rest of us speak sense.
Anyway, I didn't really make myself too clear in my last post. The places I have seen in Tassie, are Hobart, drove most of the way up Mt Well, that was stunning, (actually Hobart is a wonderful place) Snug, Port Arthur and Richmond, Sorell etc, in the south, then I drove up through the middle to Launc, where we stayed, then we went to Devonport, Deloraine, out over to Scottsdale, back through a rainforest, which was really winding road, and I didn't care too much for driving through that.
I'd like to ferry across to Dev, hire a car, drive up to Ulverstone way and make my way around the coast to Strahan, then down to Hobart, Port Arthur, again and then back up the east coast. I was looking at two weeks at least. |

diamonte54 go down through Waratah-Cradle Mountain-Tullah-Rosebury- Zeehan-Strahan.
Youll see alot of the west that way. Its amazing countryside over there with all the huge rugged mountains, rainforests etc...
Stanley is great up the North west. There is an old historic mansion there called 'Highfield House' which you can tour through its really nice..The hotel at Stanley is nice to stay at & cheap! |

| well so far sheffield is the place to be, didn't like the north east much at all and country north west around sheffield is great deloraine is a cold old place even in summer lol mole creek is nice but sheffield is the place for me. |

Thanks Matmo, I'm just a little concerned about driving around the west coast if it is anything like the Bass State Forest, it was a little too winding road for me. I perhaps could look at a bus tour while I am in some areas, rather than drive myself. I found having to drive every day was becoming exhausting, and I was missing out on the scenery. Thanks for the tip about Highfield House, I adore all those historic buildings. I could never get enough of seeing them in Tassie. It really is the most beautiful place if you want a dose of old fashioned buildings and culture, if you can't afford to get overseas at the time.
I bet it is totally beautiful this time of year as well. I loved the fact I could walk around and it wasn't too hot. Mind you, it was fairly cool the day we went to the markets, biting old wind and about 14, and that was early January, so I can imagine the winter! However, I prefer the cooler weather, so I'd like to visit either in winter or autumn next time. I can't wait to get back down there, I really hated leaving! When that plane took off, I had a tear in my eye! |

Well you sound a lot happier casino i guess things are starting to fall into place for you, And its great that you like Sheffield too, As far as the cold weather goes prepare yourself you wont know whats h$t you if your used to QLD weather hehehehe... Probably a shock to your system the first winter but its worth it as even winter is beautiful .. Wow i couldnt even say H I T .. |
