Thanks Juicy :). We're in NSW and have been debating about whether to drive down to Melbourne (broken up trip) and then take the car across on the Spirit of Tasmania. Either that or we'll fly & hire a car. Wasn't sure if Hobart was the best place to use as a base but our intention is to see as much as possible.

If you come across on the ferry you will arrive in Devonport which is in the north west, Launceston is more central as far as day trips or even over night. Hobart is in the south and while a beautiful city is really out of the way unless you intend on spending a lot of time there. And Tasmania is a lot bigger than mainlanders seem to think so i hope you have given yourself enough time to look around ....

Well given how the rest of the country is lately - 20 years behind could be a good thing.

Jluo, I knew the ferry disembarked at Devonport. Not sure if we will go that route though (meaning on the ferry). I think we'll come down and stay about ten days. Just wasn't sure if there was a lot for 12/10 year olds. I have a travel brochure here that I picked up the other day, and everything seems to be geared towards either an adventure holiday or romantic getaway.

Sorry i cant help you when it comes to what there is for 12/10 year olds as im not a parent. I think we have the same as larger cities have to offer only on a smaller scale. But be prepared to travel.Perhaps someone else on here may know what 12/10 yr olds can do.

Tassie is based on Historical value, sightseeing and travel, the girls are old enogh to get those benefits! and learn quite alot about Tasmania's past!
No we do not have Malls for interactive games like the mainland cities do!
The beauty of Tassie is ....a days travelling will take you to the end of the state! everything is close! no travelling hours and hours before some point of interest comes up!

Re:Holidaying in Tasmania Reply to this message
My wife and I recently spent a week down there, flying in from Brissie. We hired a car and proceeded to drive 2200km in the week!

Day One - Hobart to Swansea, via Port Arthur.
Day Two - Swansea to Launceston, via Elephant Pass (mmmmmm, pancakes....)
Day Three - Launceston to Devonport, via the Tamar Valley.
Day Four - Devonport to Strahan, via Cradle Mountain.
Day Five - Strahan to Hobart.
Day Six - Hobart to Huon Valley.
Day Seven - Huon valley to Hobart.

Obviously, a week just isn't long enough. We saw a lot, but missed heaps. We called it our 'Amazing Race tour of Tassie'. We'd pull up somewhere, jump out, take some pic's and spend 30 seconds looking, then jump back in the car and keep driving.

We'll go back, but we'll do it late summer on a motorbike instead. Beautiful place and well worth the visit!

Re:Holidaying in Tasmania Reply to this message
We only had a week there too and didn't see nearly enough. It is a beautiful place and we are going back again. The people are very hospitable and the food is divine. The Cataract Gorge in Launceston is gorgeous, Seahorse World out at Beauty Point in the Tamar Valley might be good for the kids too. Cradle Mountain is great, although 10/12 year olds might not be able to walk very far. In Hobart, Salamanca Place on a Saturday is great fun, we also stopped off in Richmond and Ross which are beautiful little places. Didn't get down to Port Arthur though and will do that next time. The winding roads around Queenstown and Strahan were a bit of a pain though but you have to expect that.

Re:Holidaying in Tasmania Reply to this message
We too have just returned from ten days in tassie and wished we had more time to spend . the first time I went I was about 13 ( a long time ago ) and tasmanias magic always stayed with me and was delighted that although busier tourist wise still held the same feeling for me . Especially Cradle Mountain with its beautiful Waldheim Forest . Cosy Cabins Accommodation has a chain which I imagine is reasonable for a family and are in several popular spots . I think they can do a package that allows you to move between each of them. Being off peak season now has reduced a lot of prices on tours accommodation and camper rentals .Also we found the tourist info centres excellent . They generally found us locally run tours etc that were cheaper and friendlier that werent greatly advertised and we would not have known about otherwise . Good luck and enjoy . Im envious .

We didn't do it when we were there unfortunately, but I believe the boat trip out of Strahan is absolutely fantastic. Kids would enjoy that. Our friends loved it.

Thanks for all the feedback. Have printed it off and will keep certain things in mind when planning our trip. My kids (girl/boy) both love nature so Sea Horse World would be right up their alley. Also I saw in the brochure where you can observe penguins in their own environment. I'm sure they'd love that. Plus I think the historical aspects would intrigue all of us.

Steer clear of the pub in Strahan if you want a decent feed. It's across the bay from the main town area. For $18.50, I got a dodgy bit of gristle-laden meat. For $18, my wife got a Chicken Kiev that had been murdered and a roast potato that was black on the bottom.

We thought we'd be able to get a good, cheap feed from a pub. Not so in this case.

The best feed we had was in Launceston, at the Jail House Grill. (www.jailhousegrill.com.a u) Also had some great seafood from one of the floating shops at Constitution Dock and from another floating shop in Huonville.

If you're into timber, get down to Island Specialty Timbers on Cememtary Road in Geeveston (Huon Valley). They're a mill, so you're not paying for a middle-man. Aside from several blocks, we bought a Eucalypt Burl slab that they posted home for us. They'll post anything up to 4ft long. (www.islandspecialtytimbe rs.com.au)

Re:Holidaying in Tasmania Reply to this message
Hi there,
Tassie is great for kids - we went last 2 weeks of January with a 6, 3 and 6 mo. We LOVED it. Friends joined us with their 8 and 9 yos, and they loved it. Given that it is only for 10 days don't try and see everything, even distances that sound small, 200km for example, could take 3-4 hours. Plus there are a lot of things to see along the way. With small kids we limited where we went and how much driving we did, spending a week driving around via mt field(giants table cottages, clean and friendly with everything you could want, we saw platypus and an echidna), cradle mountain (just fantastic - the kids walked the whole 6 km around Dove Lake) and strahan (we stayed in the Strahan wilderness lodge which was just lovely), then a week down on the Huon Peninsula in a house. Our friends having older children explored a bit more and loved freycinet, the penguins at Bicheno (we saw them on Bruny island - i'd HIGHLY recommend a few days on Bruny, exploring and just playing on their beautiful beaches), they also stayed in a hostel in Deloraine and enjoyed exploring that area. Everyone is different and while I'm really pleased we went to Strahan, Freycinet sounded just lovely and we'll go there next time instead. They raved about the hostel they stayed in in Bicheno.

Tassie is fantastic.

Been there twice and hope to go again.
The first time we flew and hired a car.
The second, we took the car on the ferry from Sydney.
Next time we'll drive to Melbourne and take the car across, as that was the most convenient way
