For the first time in ten years, the small spring/streamlet we get our drinking water from has run dry. This normally feeds into Quamby Brook, which is down to the merest trickle and joins the Meander River at Westbury, before flowing into the Esk.

The whole of Tasmania is under total fire ban and every river and lake is down to critical levels.

Just where the hell does the Government, Hydro and Gunns think they are going to get the quantity of water they want? The long range forecast is no better, and for the future the supply looks just as bad. Yet they still talk about constructing pipelines at public expense, to take what remains of this precious resource and virtually give it to a private company, who will then totally pollute it and render it totally useless for any purpose whatsoever. After that, they will poison the Bass Straits with the results.

The 26 gigalitres of water that Gunns requires, at nominal cost, may be more than the total water available for drinking to all the towns in the North.

Can ANYBODY explain why this private company should be so favoured over the entire population of the State? If there is a conflict of interest over water, between the municipalities who need it, and Gunns, who wish to merely profit by it, who will be given the priority?

Let’s not be misguided, imagine Great Lake in a couple of years time when the pulp mill is online - we will have situation where Great Lake is rendered useless, you will be able to jump across the South Esk and Meander rivers and their tributaries will be dry. All the while the pulp mill will be sucking drinking water from the city of Launceston. By that stage poor old dwindling Great Lake is expected to water half of the midlands, as far south as Brighton, along with the Cressy irrigation scheme and generate power through Poatina. Makes you wonder why Evercreech (which was a massive prime agricultural dairy farm bought out by Gunns) was ever planted out in plantations - it being the headwaters of the South Esk river.

talking about pubs and clubs here, you know where we all socialize, considering the alcohol we drink needs water as well ill let this one slide, i do understand your concern wade, maybe private enterprise, can pay for the consumption of water in Tasmania instead of slugging a person like me who drinks coffee, and consumes alcohol, considering the government in going to take into consideration about the drought, thats happening not only here, but Australia wide, and in the end they will charge us for our water consumption, yes its scary, my house is my asset, and gold is my wealth, without water, nothing on this earth is worth the price, water the essence of life. why do we need another pulp mill, why not upgrade the plant at boyer, we go to war over oil, and if it does come we will go to war over water, in the end greed, money and profit, they care about nothing else, leave your kids some dry dirt to play in, while we all beg and ask for water, no water, no life, and no beer, i am gonna cry now, hic!
