I don't mean to start mud-slinging contest but as an ex-South Australian I have to ask why nobody cares about the condition of the state?
The place is literally in a time loop. The government has done virtually nothing to improve public transport, fix the serious lack of opportunities on the North side, give the state something to be "proud" of or really anything to evolve the state into a modern existence. Do South Australians not care about progressing at all? All of the poor people who live there seem to be so flat and bored, totally apathetic and oblivious that everything around them is moving forward except them.
I grew up in Adelaide and to be honest, it just doesn't offer anything. I know you're gonna say "well glad you left then, we don't want you anyway" and my answer to that is.....Ok your lose....I don't want you either.
PS, Michael Atkinson is a disgrace.How you lot keep voting him in is beyond me. |

| Coming from the east I must say that I did at first find it a little odd, a huge change from inner-city Sydney, but now I'm quite content here and appreciate the less hectic lifestyle, the sense of space and overall a better quality of life. It all depends on your definition of 'progress'... |

| Nah sorry but anyone who's spent a significant time out of the state knows full well that compared to other states, SA really doesn't offer much and it's all thanks to the Rann government. Much of my family used have the same 'in denial' attitude towards South Australia but then they spent three years in Brisbane and now they're preparing to follow me up here. Adelaide is now what Brisbane was 15 years ago; a regressive backwater. Again, why do South Australians not care about progression? Are they all simply ignorant? |

| I'm an ex south aussie and I grew up in Port Lincoln, pretty, pretty place. Adelaide is cool too, however it kind of lacks the vibe of Brisbane or Sydney ... but SA is still Cool in my books and I visit there whenever I can. |

Well, here's mine: there are things that should be done in Adelaide to improve it, but that can be said about any city, they all have their good and bad points. Unfortunately both political parties here lack vision and courage, but we can always hope. Spare me the chest-beating about Brisbane, it's nothing special. Adelaide can offer plenty for anyone with the right outlook. So try not to tar all South Australians with the same brush, you just make yourself sound like a jerk. |

| Sydney is a great place to visit but unless you are rich and can live on the harbour, it's not a great place to live. Adelaide however isnt perhaps a great place to visit - a tad boring even. but as a place to LIVE it rates very highly. That said, SA has been poorly served by decades of lack-lustre, almost benign govt. there is no freeway system, public transport is so poor as to be almost unbeleivable and new concepts find infertile soil here. We have a lot going for us but innovation and progress do seem to be dirty words. |

| I'm with freedirt on this one - sorry -been to Brisbane (ho hum), even Hobart shines better than it does!! Ran into some US tourists on the w/e who couldn't stop raving about our city - yes it does have shortcomings (ALL cities do worldwide)... but where else can you live in the "country" and be an hours commute from the CBD ?? Give me Adelaide anytime !! :D xx |

Dont forget the lovely water & stinking HOT weather Sa provides..... Since I left that dump & now am in greener & whiter pastures my health is improving immensley....from both being in a beautful clean enviroment with friendly people around me. South Australians lack compassion & live literatley in a 'state' of denial....I pity all those poor South Australians coping with that vile hot climate, your already got summer weather there...OMG....and the vile polluted beaches there yuk!!! I got absolutley no support or a sympathetic shoulder there when that vile summer nearly killed me you just all think its a joke & laugh & say 'Put up with it' thats a very negative attitude to give to someone suffering....
That on top of that Rann government is just too much for one to endure...Your all so arrogant & self absorbed its just sad...FFS why dont South Australians look on ways of getting Rann kicked out for starters instead of just having a non care & Put up with it attitude & bigoted attitudes towards positive changes....If you dare to voice your opinion there your laughed at or arrested by the over policing that that Rann nut has instated.......

It's not a generalization, it's a fact. I grew up there so it's not as though I don't 'know' South Australia.
Anyone who 'loves' South Australia has obviously never ventured outside of the state. Honestly, compared to Adelaide, Brisbane is that special. Live elsewhere for more than a week and then get back to me. Denial is a brilliant coping mechanism. |

You might have 'grown up' here (obviously a work in progress), but you don't know all South Australians so stop claiming you know how we all think and feel.
For the record, you pompous ass, I have lived in Brisbane and am well qualified to say it's nothing special, compared to Adelaide or anywhere else. I've lived in Sydney and Melbourne too, which like all cities have their good and bad points. So you see, the fact that someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they've never ventured outside the state...they might even have a greater depth of experience than you do. |

I have yet to hear a plausible explanation as to why the people of South Australia have no care for their states serious lack of progression.
BTW, I'll be called pompous and wear it as a badge of pride if said during a discussion about how everywhere else is better than Adelaide. But again please explain to me why none of your give two hoots about the fact your miserable patch of red dirt is stuck in the past?

Spent the last 20 years living all over Australia and the world. When I wanted to settle down, have kids etc. I came back to Adelaide. Good schools, great restaurants, great wine,good cheap housing. Safe and secure, I agree the Govt is useless, but hey I'm a conservative.
But I'm not living in the mortgage belt north or south, but then again that style of living is the same the world over, don't kid yourselves. |

freedirt, Brisbane is far from perfect. I have a lot of issues with the QLD government right now but again in comparison to Adelaide it IS that much better. There's a reason 5,000 people migrate to to our state every week.
This is mostly just my opinion but there are definitely quite a few issues which just don't fall under subjectivity. As I said, public transport is absolutely horrendous and what is the government doing about it? Nothing. Getting to Tea Tree Plaza from Salisbury East is a pain in the butt by itself. I often had to get a bus to the train station, then a train to another bus stop and then another bus just to get up a damn hill! I have lived in a variety of areas in Brisbane and I have ALWAYS been able to get directly to where I want to go without an issue. In Adelaide it's just so illogical and complicated.
Of course there are better places out there than Brisbane, duh! I'm not that ignorant. When it comes down to it what kills Adelaide for me is the culture (or lack thereof), the snotty attitude of South Australians (as you have clearly displayed) and most of all (as I continue to say) the lack of progression.
Allow me to elaborate: the roads haven't been upgrade in what seems like 100 years. Building a gateway around the city would get rid of shit loads of needless congestion. Furthermore, upgrading the public transport infrastructure to suit a more modern age would also achieve this. i.e more bus stops, better routes, more train stations etc.
Utilizing modern architecture would give the city a more modern feel and hell, maybe give people an incentive to open a business in Adelaide. Stop wasting money on over-policing bikie gangs and banning smoking in cars and give South Australians something to be proud of! Regression? Not even decent shops, not enough clubs or decent pubs, no legal brothels, crap roads, illogical public transport, overall bankrupt state due to overpolicing and sheer idiocy. REGRESSION. |

Getting from one suburb to another on public transport can be a problem, in Brisbane too. But this has been neglected by SA governments for decades, hopefully their hand is beginning to be forced now. Roads? There's no major metropolitan freeways, but it hasn't really been necessary, it's still easy to get around for the most part.
Utilizing modern architecture? What does that mean? Knock down anything with heritage appeal and put up more featureless boxes? I'm sure a city can move ahead without resorting to that.
There are plenty of shops, many great pubs and how many clubs do you need? Legal brothels?? Get busted here did you? Hardly an issue, although I agree they should be legal. Bankrupt? Obviously you're no finance expert.
And culture? Coming from someone in Brisbane, the cultural centre of the world? Priceless! |
